The stretching is done by the broadcasters. However, CV does additional compression on all the channels except broadcast stations(ABC, NBC,CBS,etc); RSNs(MSG, YES, SNY, etc) and ESPN 1&2.
Sorry, but mindlessly defending CV without regards to facts makes you a fanboy or possibly an employee.
Fact #1: CV over-compresses all their HD offerings except broadcast HD, the local RSNS & ESPN(1&2). CV's compression causes numerous visual artifacts that reduce the quality of the picture...
I stay with them because it is my only option for MSGHD, trust me if Fios had it I'd be gone already.
And maybe if more people complained about the poor quality HD they would have to do something about. I'd rather have half of the HD channels they currently have without the compression.
And...
I don't need a link. The proof is right in the SA8300. If you look at the QAM channel assignments you will see that MOST QAM frequencies have 4 HD channels assigned to them.
In order to squeeze that much into these QAMs you need to compress the bandwidth, in some cases from 18Mbs to 9Mbs...
Newsflash - Cablevision compresses the hell out of most of their HD channels reducing their bandwidth by 50% which destroys the quality of the HD channel. (i.e. all Voom Channels, MOJO, VSHD, NGHD, DiscoveryHD, TBSHD, TNTHD, etc...)
They do not have capacity for 500 HD channels, that is a bold faced lie based on the ability to use SDV for 500 HD channels. They can't even get 15 SDV channels working!
It is not a matter of how many HD channels CV has, it is the quality of them. Since they are jamming 4 HD channels into the...
The channels are all over-compressed they are putting 3 and 4 channels into each QAM. I don't care how many HD channels they have, most look like garbage.
They don't have the bandwidth for the current channels that they have, they are overcompressed and have only been adding SDV channels, which don't work properly. You won't see 50 HD channels, so 500 is a dream.
CV's ability to offer 500 HD channels is BS. It would have to be implemented via Switched Digital Video(SDV). And they have thus far not proven that they have the ability to do that reliably, e.g. the International Channels & NHL Center Ice have been plagued with problems and the quality is...
There is a problem with scheduling a recording on any NHL Center Ice channel. It appears to be a compatibility problem with SDV as the issue is occurring on the International Channels as well, according to a forum on DSL reports. If you try to record while tuned to the channel then it works...
Anyone know what the delay for NHL Center Ice is? Indemand came to an agreement already does CV have to come up with a separate agreement with NHL to show it?
