It's not wasting anything. It's just mapped to the same channel number. Only one channel's worth of data is coming to you. So if you are thinking "Why are they wasting the bandwidth on this when they could be bringing me another HD channel?" it's not quite correct thinking.

You mean you misunderstood ;) A 4x8 or 5x8 (adds OTA) cascadable will pass all 3 sat signals. A 2x or 3x (Again, OTA), usually will only pass 101.

More than likely, unless there is a serious issue, or an upgrade is necessary to receive additional programming, there will be no further updates to older receivers such as yours.

I could be wrong, but I believe that D* will not let you drop everything but ST. And as far as I know, you don't have to have the HD package to get HD games. It's like the HBO/Showtime deal. No need to have the HD package to get those in HD. Only requires subscription to HBO or Showtime.

slacker, you may have been confusing that with bandwidth per transponder.

If you are referencing to the "dust door", this is common practice now instead of using the "dummy plug" to keep dust and debris out of the port. The "door" folds inward and out of the way when you plug in an optic cable. No need to remove anything.

The other issue you are missing here is: the satellite 1 and 2 is referring to the actual lines coming into the Tivo unit, not the satellites themselves. So he's having an issue with the first satellite input on the tivo. Which could be a bad cable, a bad multiswitch, or the tuner for that...

Read any of the ATSC standards at http://www.atsc.org/standards.html. ATSC relies on MPEG2 for digital encoding of audio, video, and psip (program data).

Personally, I would use the EZ-DVI setting, which allows the receiver to output the native format over DVI instead of sticking to one setting. That way standard definition is output in 480i, HD is 720p/1080i, etc. I have a Sony GWIII and this helped tremendously for me.
