I have a VIP 211 hooked up to a HTPC running vista and streaming to three Linksys video extenders running in the house. It works okay though sometimes it will have artifacts if network traffic is high.
You can buy a receiver yourself and install without a commitment,. Check out the DISH Store, one of the sponsors at the top of the page, they have a 211 for $119. After you have it hooked up just call or chat with dish to have it activated.
They won't really support a 5 sat set up, what you want to do is a DIY project. It can be done but you have to point to 119 by using just a receiver and a single cable and not use the the DPP switch until everything is bolted down and you can identify that you have a good lock on all the...

If you don't mind another dish on the garage go to the Dish Store at the top of the page and order another system with a receiver and just mount it there that way you don't have to worry about long cable runs or burying any cables.
Those were a special beta program with special Vip 211k tuners that were connected via USB to Media center. There were some threads here a few months ago but no specified release date, more of a prof of concept.
