    I miss the old days!

    1. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and the Movie Channel were up there. Spotlight was there, and Showtime bought them out and shut it down in early 84. Disney was there too. Other premiums included Home Theater Network which just a couple of hours per night, except on Sundays, and eventually evolved...

    I miss the old days!

We got our first satellite setup, a Birdview dish with separate receiver/positioner in 85, the summer before HBO began VCII encryption. It was purchased because we had moved to the country from the city, and my dad got irritated with spending a lot of money on weekly VHS rentals. (The...

    HTS TRACKER SYSTEM 70

Those Houston Trackers were amazing. My dad had a Tracker V that served him for almost 15 years. Along with the old Birdview dish that sat in the back yard for about 20 years, it made for some excellent satellite viewing. Where our original Birdview setup was receiver, motor controller, and...

    Videocipher question

True, what I was asking was whether that was a Videocipher I decoder in that picture? Nobody has ever posted a picture online of what a Videocipher I Decoder looks like, from what I've recalled. All I've seen are the VCII commercial and residential decoders. It was only a thought that maybe...

    Videocipher question

A little picture for those of you in the television business or who have worked at network affiliates back in the day: http://www.akdart.com/vtr/jpeg/RB-324.jpg The picture in the link above is of KDFW-TV's satellite room circa late 1980s, back during their days as a CBS affiliate. If you'll...

Shepherd's Chapel goes digital (and HD) August 1st

Shepherd's Chapel, digital, and HD. Who would ever think that you would ever see that happening? :-D I always thought that it would be the last analog signal standing. But with the Weather Channel's analog signal finally going away.....anything is possible.

The Weather Chanel (C3-13) leaves analog

Actually I spoke wrong about Shepherd's Chapel.....they're about to go HD on August 1st. http://www.shepherdschapel.com/satellite-specifications.htm

The Weather Chanel (C3-13) leaves analog

Well, and with that.....Videocipher has faded into technological oblivion....31 years since satellite TV viewers first heard of the existence of the system when HBO announced that they were going to be using the system to encode their analog feeds, and 28.5 years since they carried out their...

    Any Analog left on C-Band?

Just out of curiosity....seeing as I haven't had access to a C-Band dish in almost ten years.....anyone know of any analog C-Band channels still out there?

How Long Have You Had Your BUD?

We had C-Band from late 1985 to 1995, and again from 1997 to 2002. The dish had always been the same.....a 6 ft. Birdview. We had an old Birdview receiver with separate positioner in 1985. Replaced that with a new Birdview unit w/built-in positioner in 87. We added a seperate VCII box in...

    Shepherd's Chapel

Could be worse....they could still be noting that they were on Westar IV, Channel 6. I believe they launched on Westar, and migrated when G6, and then G4 replaced W4.

    Analog channels to be discontinued

And so the death knoll for Videocipher rings......and after about 25 years after HBO first began to talk about using the system. RIP, Videocipher II/II+/RS, 1986-2008

Birdview Brochure Scans...Feast Your Eyes Y'all

That Birdview system was the very first C-Band system my family bought in the summer of 1985.....Dish and all. Somewhere in the house is a book that my dad wrote down the dish position numbers we used on the positioner on that old system to indicate where G1, F1, F3, and a few others. We still...

Taking A Trip Down Memory Lane - Satellite TV Magazine, October 1983

Interesting find....makes me want to track down more old Satellite magazines from the 1980s. I've already got a small collection of Satellite Orbit magazines dating to 7/85. Speaking of Satellite Orbit, I'm looking to add those and plenty of other satellite magazines to my collection. If...

Any idea what the current number of Videocipher Subscribers is?

As more and more services end analog, we'll see those VC2 numbers drop more and more. I expect with the impending end of HBO-East in the middle of next month on analog that there will be a huge drop in VC2.

    Found Another Different Solid Birdview

I know the feeling...we still have our 22 year old Birdview dish in our backyard....the exact same model as pictured in this post, but with some modifications (namely, the replacement of the original pole after the dish tipped over due to rust without damage to the dish itself..and replacement...

    analog feeds still going strong.

While analog transponder space maybe expensive to rent....and the equipment may be expensive....prices have gotta come down sometime. I remember reading where transponder space in the 1970s was expensive as all get out...then dropped with time as more satellites hit the skies. Analog has...

    analog feeds still going strong.

I wouldn't be surprised if analog was totally gone by the end of next year....with the way all of television is moving towards digital and the regular OTA television move from analog and digital set to be completed by the early part of 2009.
