Hey guys, I haven't posted here in a long while, but I figured what the heck I will stop by

as many of you may know, when Dish decided to take the road down crap PQ on their HD channels I had to do the right thing and cancel, no one loved HD more than I did and Dish was the best choice, I had multiple thousands of $'s invested, recorded hundreds of HD shows a month and gladly paid a 150$ bill to Dish, however when Dish started with Voom and the ultimate downrezzing of them and moving on to others including my favorite HDNet's, I had to draw a line in the sand and say enough was enough  so I cancelled all HD services and have had none since, over a year now, I am heavily into Blu-Ray and HD-DVD now, even reviewing for a site or 2, but that doesn't mean I don't wish I still had HD services

lately I have been reading and watching the forums alot, I have come to realize that Dish at current time sits atop a fence post and can go 2 ways, the right way and the wrong way and Mpeg4 is where this all started

on one side of the fence Dish Network can very easily at this time to the right thing for HD PQ, with the movement to Mpeg4 Dish can easily treat all HD channels with the ultimate respect, most importantly full resolution 1920x1080i on the relevant channels and at minimum 8 mbps bitrate, what this means is that they can probably do 5 HD channels per 8psk transponder easily if they work with things and use the newest best encoders

or (I have to be honest here I think this is the way things will go) they can go the other way and continue with the destruction of HD image quality by lowering all channels to 1280/1440x1080i and using horrid bitrates, squeezing 8 HD channels or so per transponder

I make a public plea with Dish to do the right thing and in the process gain the extra room needed for HD channels(with untouched resolution and good rates, each citys locals would only take 1 tp for example)

don't get greedy  , do what is right and the customers will flock, everyone wins, current customers enjoy better true HD PQ and then subs that are quality obsessed will sign up

do whats right Dish, 1920x1080i at a minimum of 8Mbps and still gain room, I have my doubts but I never give up hope:)

I finally got to see some Mpeg4 HD from Dish, oh my lord  I could have never imagined how bad it truly was, the sample I looked at was HGTV, it is 1440x1080i at...... 6.75 Mbps  that is not a sick joke, this is less than DVD bitrates and picture quality that to be honest, is worse than DVD most of the time

guys I never could have imagined how bad Dish PQ truly has went since I was around 1.5 years ago, I wanted to get back into the game because of new happenings, but I can tell you already that if things stay the way they are right now, my newly purchased modified equipment will be long gone come fall

my favorite HDNets are hammered to total sh*t now, 1440x1080i at around 11.5Mbps, I mean TRASH

how anyone can watch and enjoy this stuff is beyond me

It's still better than SD crap on large HDTV's and a step in the right direction.

no it's not

all these providers and channels could be putting out broadcast quality 16:9 720x480 images at 10Mbps Mpeg2, Dish passing it thru untouched and it would look as good, no one could tell the difference and I would bet on it

the point is that everyone is wasting their time, programmers and broadcasters send out these images that should be wow everytime you view them

for example the Vooms, I can see the quality is there, they are really high-end in their broadcasting, it's truly a shame we can't get these channels in their form they are meant to be seen, they would be amazing

what we see from Dish is NOT what is meant to be seen and is not what HDTV was invented or instated for, what we are getting is anamorphic DVD quality images

anyone ever seen untouched NTSC Analog feeds from CBand? like NBC, CBS etc., they look better than this trash Dish is passing as HD

take a look at Discovery HD on CBand, oh dear it is so good, take a look at Blu-Ray or HD-DVD as Sean mentioned

I can't understand how you can say that SD looks better than the so-called HDLite. Especially on a large tv. No broadcasters are putting out a 16:9 720x480 image at 10Mbps Mpeg2 so your argument is baseless. Don't get me wrong, I'm an HD fanatic as myself. I'm just taking what I can get at this point. We're not going to get the quality we are looking for right out of the box.

Anyway, I'll enjoy what they give us for now while your watching the SD you claim to be better.

I never said SD from Dish, I said SD from a SDI modified DVD player and a 3,000$ DVDO VP50 scaler setup

I think you missed my point, it was that if such a broadcast was on Dish (720x480 16:9 10Mbps Mpeg2) that majority of people couldn't tell a difference between that and the trash that Dish calls HD and charges for

the answer to "DishHD" is a 30 to 40 inch display MAX, not a CRT front projection system at 110", the later is where my arguement comes from ;)

well, then i guess we're going to get a lot of channels!

I think it will be awhile before the number of channels out grow the new systems. By the time most National Networks have a HD Version of their channel up and running with more HD Content. We could be back to one format which would mean no more SD Channels all HD. But that is a long time away due to it's going to take awhile for the National Networks to 1st get a HD Version of their channel and 2nd get their channels running in true MPEG4. Dish and other's will have their end covered as far as MPEG4 but the Networks will need to get their stuff running on MPEG4 as well. A good example of this as far as the Network would be HBO.

HBO Move to MPEG-4 Opens Door to Big Changes in Cable > Screenplays Magazine > Flash Points

HBO CTO Robert Zitter let it be known that when his company begins a move to HDTV beginning the end of this year, it will use MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) compression to deliver the HDTV versions of all 26 HBO and Cinemax channels to cable and telco headends. Most operators had assumed the programmer would either stick with MPEG-2 or simulcast channels in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats to accommodate the disparate delivery modes in cable and telco IPTV.

However, Zitter, speaking at a breakfast meeting prior to the opening of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers Cable Tech Expo conference in Orlando in June, made clear the economies of operating in MPEG-4 mode were too compelling to ignore. The compression technology is definitely ready "for prime time," he said. "We think we've reached the tipping point for high-def."

This assessment defies the assertions widely voiced in cable circles that MPEG-4 AVC is still a work in progress that will not be ready for deployment by cable until many months hence. In comments typical of this view, a technology expert in cable, speaking on background, last month told ScreenPlays the telephone industry's claims regarding use of MPEG-4 were largely hype owing to the limited amount of bandwidth savings that could be accomplished at quality levels that meet industry performance standards. "It's not worth the cost if you can't get more than three channels of HDTV into a 6 MHz channel using AVC," he said.

But Zitter said HBO would be transmitting at 8 megabits-per-second, including an allotment of about 1 mbps for "overhead." This puts the audio/video transmit payload for quality levels acceptable by HBO at around 7 mbps, which means that four and possibly even five HD channels would fit into a 6 MHz RF cable channel using 256 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) technology, which delivers 38 mbps per 6 MHz channel.

Given HBO's clout, cable operators have no choice but to invest in the headend transcoding equipment that will be required to recode the HBO feeds to MPEG-2 for delivery to legacy set-tops in the field. As a result, other programmers are likely to feel they too can exploit the satellite transponder cost savings that go with greater bandwidth efficiency.

This, in turn, will open a direct MPEG-4 path for delivering HD content to advanced hybrid set-tops with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding capabilities. This pass-through efficiency should serve to expedite deployment of such set-tops, opening a faster track to wider use of MPEG-4 in cable.

ill have to agree with gweedo, i just got HD hooked up on my 32" LCD in my bedroom, and i must say the pic quality is noticeably better than on my 55" in the livingroom.

I think people concentrate on resolution way too much. It's really mostly about bitrate. An MPEG2 DVD with a 10Mb/sec will look better in most cases than an HD MPEG2 with an 8Mb/sec bit rate. Resolution is not everything. My 6 megapixels Canon Rebel takes way better pictures than the 10 megapixels Sony point and shoot I also own.
K
I had a chance to see cinemax HD in mpeg2 and mpeg4 side by side and. The biggest thing I noticed was the mpeg4 feed had removed almost all of the film grain noise. The mpeg2 feed looked better but I wonder how much of that was because the mpeg4 feed was a conversion. I'd be interested to see it again when the mpeg2 feed is a conversion from mpeg4.

mpeg2 was from local cable and mpeg4 was from dish

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

I was watching some of this guy's stuff and realized some of you may not be familiar. Basically his show is Candid Camera meets a magician. This is a comp of a few of his exploits. I first learned of him when I was out at a meeting in Denver about 10yrs ago. The men I was sitting at the table with started talking about this show and said it was one of the funniest things they had seen. When I got home I started watching it....yes, it is funny.

Now testing on the stream server:
WJBF-D2 CW Augusta GA
KSVI-D2 CW Billings MT
WETM-D2 CW Elmira NY
WJET-D2 CW Erie PA
KLFY-D2 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-D2 CW Monroe LA
WVBT-D2 CW Norfolk VA
WTWO-D2 CW Terre Haute IN
WFXV-D2 CW Utica NY
KFDX-D3 CW Wichita Falls TX
K
PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
