Here is an article that is interesting. Granted it is only opinion, but this individual was initially on the Blu-ray side and is an analyst.

Just for you John:

Panasonic Develops 4x Blu-Ray Burner

It is not out today but by the end of September -- that's soon enough.

And while I will admit that a 750gb drive is relatively inexpensive to purchase right now my response was in comparing a 25gb disc when within 30 days you will be able to buy a drive that will burn a 50GB disc at 4x. That's shortsheeting the facts.

As for backup speed, as you can see this drive is stated to acheive 4x speed. There are some companies claiming 10x speed on BD backup. As you know, speed goes up as time goes by. Another shortsheeting of the facts.

As for price, all prices go down after time -- except for land -- my understanding is that they aren't making anymore of that stuff unless you count moving it into the sea. I expect prices to be high intially and then come down to reasonability within 2 to 3 years.

This whole HD-DVD vs BD thing is about distorted facts. What one can and the other can't. How cheap one is compared to how expensive the other is. How one has features the other can't do. There is only one thing BD has that HD-DVD doesn't -- that's 25gb per layer compared to 15gb for HD-DVD. And there is nothing HD-DVD has that BD can not do. Given time (my guess is 6 months to a year) there will be no differance between the two formats except for who is supporting whom. Nothing that iHD can do will not be able to be done under Java-Live and vice-versa. The only real differance is what codec is being used and the bit rate. BD will always be able to use any compression codec the studio wants to use (they already do) and the bit rate can and should always be higher.

PQ and Audio Quality will be relatively the same and the cost will be too. At that point the consumer will either vote (by their wallets) one format out or both will go on to live for a few years and never replace DVD. That is pretty much the whole can of beans -- as they say.

Did not dispute the pricing differance between the hard drive and BD discs. As for what Fox is going to do-- nobody knows that right now -- and talk is speculation. 'Someone said' is exactly what I refer to as distortion as facts. Give us a link to something concrete -- 'Someone' could be your dog (not your's -- this is a referance).

As for the writer of the article he is famous (or infamous -- depends on who you listen to or read) about his support for PCs (over Apple for one) Microsoft and developements and ideology directly relating. His article could of easily been written by the CEO of M$. BD loses but HD-DVD doesn't win with neither replacing DVD and downloadable HD content eventually being the winner. (This is a short paraphase of the article). My stating he is on M$ payroll is not true (I should not of stated this) but he is definately resides on the block where their ideolgy is currently residing.

I prefer to read the weekly sales totals for both formats. Increased BD standalone sales and steady defintion between the two formats in discs sales pretty much does not show that BD is for one -- slowing down nor are they looking like they are the losers right now. They look like the leader in the first leg of the race. This dog and poney show is not going to be over that quickly. There are more twists and turns to come.

No, it isn't. It's what I can buy today; not weeks from now assuming it actually ships on time.

It still won't keep up with external disc; and you haven't solved the cost equation either.

The burner is going to be more expensive than a 750GB drive; and the media is going to cost you the equivalent of 2-3 more 760GB drives.

Let me put it to you this way:
For a smaller out of pocket expense I can put up 2.25 TB of usable and protected storage.

As for backup speed, as you can see this drive is stated to acheive 4x speed. There are some companies claiming 10x speed on BD backup. As you know, speed goes up as time goes by. Another shortsheeting of the facts.

Yes, and they do for hard drives too. Since both will increase in speed over time how is this shortsheeting the facts; other than it's not me praising Blu-ray as the savior of the world.

Anyone that needs archival backup won't use blu-ray.

As for price, all prices go down after time -- except for land -- my understanding is that they aren't making anymore of that stuff unless you count moving it into the sea. I expect prices to be high intially and then come down to reasonability within 2 to 3 years.

In 2-3 years; the drive capacity will be measured in multiple terabytes. How will you keep up with the dramatic storage capability increase?

For perspective; it will take ten non-existent 200GB discs at an unknown cost and an unknown availability date for a hard drive I will be able to buy next year.

Neither side is standing still.

This whole HD-DVD vs BD thing is about distorted facts.

Some of us provide facts; others don't.

What one can and the other can't.

Until sometime in 2008 (unknown yet) the feature set of Blu-ray will lag behind HD-DVD. Until the 2.0 spec players ship HD-DVD still has a greater scope of features.

This will be > 2 years after launch before Blu-ray can catch up to where HD-DVD was at on day one. And you talk about HD-DVD getting a product out before it's ready?

How cheap one is compared to how expensive the other is. How one has features the other can't do. There is only one thing BD has that HD-DVD doesn't -- that's 25gb per layer compared to 15gb for HD-DVD. And there is nothing HD-DVD has that BD can not do.

Get back to me in 2008 when you can upgrade your player's firmware across the internet; share with your friends and download new content for Blu-ray. You can't as these are 2.0 spec and nobody meets that spec.

While you're at it; show me PiP on Blu-ray. Oh wait that isn't shipping yet either. So 18 months + before we get that on Blu-ray.

It remains to be seen whether HD-DVD will deliver on the 51GB disc they mentioned at CES. I remain somewhat skeptical of its arrival.

Given time (my guess is 6 months to a year) there will be no differance between the two formats except for who is supporting whom.

Nothing that iHD can do will not be able to be done under Java-Live and vice-versa.

No one has argued this point. What has been pointed out to you time and time again is that the cost to deliver the interactivity on Blu-ray will remain higher. Apparently you don't consider the studio's costs for production to be important and it most certainly is.

The only real differance is what codec is being used and the bit rate.

Since they're identical the choice to use which codec is an authoring decision; not format based.

Can you really see a difference between MPEG-4/AVC/H.264 between a 12-13 Mb/second VC-1 vs. an 18 Mb/second VC-1? What about for H.264?

If the answer is no; then it's wasted bits.

BD will always be able to use any compression codec the studio wants to use (they already do) and the bit rate can and should always be higher.

Is the picture really better? I haven't seen conclusive evidence that this is the case. I've seen some cases where one codec has flaws and the other has different flaws. Pick your poison there.

PQ and Audio Quality will be relatively the same and the cost will be too. At that point the consumer will either vote (by their wallets) one format out or both will go on to live for a few years and never replace DVD. That is pretty much the whole can of beans -- as they say.

That's fine by me.

It's quite humorous that you pedantically have to point out your's when you can't correctly spell the words "difference" (differance (sic)) and reference (referance (sic)). I would suggest you not give spelling tips.

As for the writer of the article he is famous (or infamous -- depends on who you listen to or read) about his support for PCs (over Apple for one) Microsoft and developements and ideology directly relating.

MS is the dominant player in the PC industry. Like it or not that fact is not disputable. I suppose that someone might prefer a PC over Apple makes them silly right?

You do realize that for many of us; computers are tools right? And that for some of us that the tool that best supports the job is a PC running a variant of Windows.

He agrees with MS' point of view in some areas. Guess what, so do I.

I prefer to read the weekly sales totals for both formats. Increased BD standalone sales and steady defintion between the two formats in discs sales pretty much does not show that BD is for one -- slowing down nor are they looking like they are the losers right now.

If you're really reading the weekly sales; then you would see that the sales are leveling off and equalizing between 3:2 and 2:1.

Given all these Blu-ray players that were going to bury the HD-DVD side it should be a much steeper victory; but it isn't.

They look like the leader in the first leg of the race. This dog and poney show is not going to be over that quickly. There are more twists and turns to come.

What the hell is a poney (sic) show? I know what a pony is (an infant horse) but I have no clue what a poney is.

You really shouldn't pick on others' spelling when yours is decidedly not a model of correctness.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The new curated multiview is now live.
While on many of the sports channels and non sports channels there is a multi view option button. It will pull up a side bar with many different multi view options.

It's now expanded to a Build Your Own Multiview, currently available to streaming customers with Geminis and Roku, and coming soon to Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, LG, Apple TV and Tizen.

But not on the only device they ship out right now which is the Gemini Air.

The post read: "currently available to streaming customers with Geminis and Roku, and coming soon to Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, LG, Apple TV and Tizen". It didn't mention the Air. I suppose when it said Geminis it meant both but I had no way of knowing that.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Outside of gaming, would Joe Sixpack notice any difference?

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.
