How to get Eye Popping HD ?

Over the weekend I was at my local Best Buy and they had a blue ray player and HD DVD Player set up with some sample discs running. The HD was eye popping amazing on both so I checked out the specs of the setup. The TV's they were running them on were Sony 42" LCD's that were 1080p and both were 15,000 - 1 contrast ratio.
By the same token I went to sams club where they had a 1080p plasma set up with a HD DVD and the picture wasn't eye popping but I noticed the contrast ratio was only 1500-1. Does this mean if I get a HD set for my HD DVD player I can get the eye popping HD if I get a 1080p set with a high contrast ratio such as the 15000 - 1 sony LCD? Is the 1080p and contrast ratio the keys for eye popping HD?

I did notice the 2 sony LCD's, despite only being 42", were expensive, around $3000. However, Sam's club had a 1080p, 50" with a 10,000 - 1 contrast ratio for $1800.00

The Blu-ray and HD-DVD dispays setup at Best Buy are ISF calibrated if the market provides the ISF calibration service to customers. Look for tags on the TVs that say "This TV has been calibrated" Having a TV ISF calibrated is more important than what brand it is (SONY, LG, SAMSUNG, ect,) what display technology it is(lcd, plasma, dlp...), or alot of times even the source. I'm ISF certified and viewing/calibrating hundreds of TVs has really opened my eyes to just how great a picture can get. Contrast ratios on TVs can't be trusted from a retail store. They test it by pumping white at high contrast, measuring, then they turn the display off, and measure again. Very misleading. Have your tv calibrated, if you're in D/FW metroplex, look me up, I'll help you out.

You're too far to personally do me any good but what price range do services like yours go for in southern California?

And someone said they thought Consumer Reports reviews of TVs weren't any good. To me they were the one place where scientists and engineers did the work '"by the numbers" and the truth was never compromised. Have you read any of their stuff on HD? Do you think it was accurate? Do you know of *ANY* source of accurate reviews of HDTVs/Monitors?

I have never believed the web page reviews I see simply because so many of their statements display their complete lack of objectivity.

I just got my HD DVR installed yesterday, so I hadn't spent time adjusting the contrast and stuff to match HD content until today. Man it really does make a difference. Tiger Woods looked like he was in my living room, and I could see the tiny little pieces of grass on the greens very clearly, it was really cool.

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
