I have been a Dish subscriber now for about 4-months. My main incentive for switching was because cable prices just kept going up and up. Taking advantage of the new subscriber deals with a satellite system (Dish or Direct), I went with Dish. Installation went smoothly and I can't complain of any major issues.

Overall, and I don't mean this to intentionally stir up anyone, I am still wondering whther the move was good or not. For the first year, I will be saving money, but eventually the cost will go up and be closer to what my cable bill was. Also with cable, my best recollection is that outages occurred very rarely. With Dish, I experience one almost weekly. It might only be about a 5 minute outage, but it is annoying.

I also find the channel lineup screen really difficult. I have stations listed twice, once in a lower channel range, then again in the 9000 range. I just don't get-it. I could take the time to understand it, but maybe that's part of my point. I shouldn't have to put much time into this type of stuff. It should be straightforward and easy.

I lost the local neighborhood Cable-Access station and our village council broadcasts. I can live without these, but nonetheless, it is a difference and a loss for the satellite subscribers. On-Demand is also gone.

My intent here is to not necessarily put-down Dish, but rather to state some differences I am seeing that make we ponder whether I made the right decision. I will live with Dish for the extent of my contract, but at the end will evaluate the cost savings. To me if the cost savings is considerable, I would happily accept those things I consider as shortcomings and stay with satellite. But if the costs start to even out, I would have to believe I would consider switching back because overall my comfort level with cable seemed like it was better than what I am experiencing now.

Anybody care to offer any pursuasion for satellite?

I have cable...only because I don't have to pay for extra receivers beyond the first TV (just use analog cable for each additional TV)...if it weren't for that extra cost I'd switch to satellite in a heartbeat.

Yes, that's true too, but most of the channels that one would want to watch are on basic cable

Well in our area Comcast has gone to all digital. I am sure that most other cable companies will do the same in the future. So you will have to have a box at every tv. In our area that has made the average house cost about 70 for BASIC.

Ditto here when I had cable. Unless you had a converter box, all you got was basics - abc, nbc, cbs, fox, pbs, etc. When I had 2 HD DVRs w/ HBO and internet the bill was regularly over $130.00

Then they'd lose me as a customer real fast.

That's one of the only things tying me to cable. But I don't think digital only is going to happen here...I'd say about 75% of the cable subscribers are only basic analog.

The other thing that ties me to them is lack of DSL in my area...I get a discount on my internet access by being a cable subscriber.

We used to get the discount with the phone and internte but now they have discontinued that promotion. Besides the PQ on dish is far superior to what I was getting with Cox. Plus all of the dish channels are digital.

Digital doesn't mean a thing. Well, technically it does, but there's no advantage. I've seen digital channels that look worse because of compression than their analog equivilents.

I'd love to switch for more HD, as TW doesn't have much to offer, but it'd cost me about $50 more a month.

It's easy to make it so the duplicate local channels don't show up. Just add them to your locked out channels, then hide the locked channels.

I do this for the duplicate local channels, all of the shopping channels and all of the religious channels.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Which one has O'Neil being Ancients? I am at the end of Season 8 now.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
