DVR quality versus live TV quality

I am wondering whether there are any quality differences between playing recorded shows from the DVR and watching live TV.

In TIVO recorders, you can set the recording quality. why is this feature not available to dish receivers?

The digital bit stream from the satellite (or an OTA channel) is recorded without any changes. The playback quality is the same as watching the program live.

Like caam1 says - the DVR records the actual, complete digital stream from the satellite.

When you watch playback, you are watching at exactly the same quality as live - you're watching the same digital stream of information.

There is no quality setting - you always record "best quality".

I agree. What is sent to your receiver is what is recorded.

Tivo has settings because the Tivo box has to make a digital bitstream to save to disk from an analog TV signal. And since it's doing that they figured they could get by with a smaller drive and still advertise huge space by using the lowest quality conversion but having a high quality setting with not much room for picky customers.

None of these issues can occur with Dish. It's bits in = bits out. No compromise and no complex calculations used.

Because there's no difference in quality. Dish DVRs don't have any re-compression hardware. They simply divert the data stream to the disk. It's all the same data no matter if it's decoded as it's received, or decoded as it's played back.

That's not quite what caam1 said! Just to clarify a little more, the DVR does not record the "complete digital stream from the satellite", nor even the complete stream from a single transponder. Rather, it records the transport stream from a single channel (demultiplexed and usually decrypted from the complete stream from a single transponder), and adds a few more bytes from the previously-stored program guide in ancillary files associated with that program. I imagine that's what Cold Irons meant to say. ;)

Bottom line: you're watching the same decompressed and converted (D to A) digital data in all it's pristine perfection, and not a converted (A to D), compressed, and reconverted (D to A) version a la Tivo. I don't own a Tivo, but I suspect it has knobs to turn for aggressiveness of the compression, if not the two converter steps as well. A Dish network receiver has at most the scaler/deinterlacer (D to A conversion step) knob to turn on HD receivers. SD receivers of course have no knobs. If you are comparing the picture on the same TV, set up the same way, with the same cabling, and the same receiver set up the same way, then the two pictures (recorded and live) should be identical.

Furthermore, Dish SD DVR's have greater hours of capacity on the same size HDD compared to a Tivo because the files from the Dish stream are already highly compressed. A similarly highly compressed file using Tivo (similar bit rate) will result in an inferior PQ from the Tivo compared to Dish PQ. Dish downloads firmware to the STB's that can take advantage of ever changing sprocessing and encoding Dish does prior to uplink that allows for a somewhat decent picture from a pretty low bit rate. These kinds of hardware and transmission schemes (at the broadcast end) and software updates (at the Tivo end--analog models) are not possible.

Regarding Tivo digital recordings from broadcast HD, they will take up far more room on the HDD than the same HD broadcast received and recorded from the Dish satellite because broadcast digital HD is MPEG 2 and Dish HD is MPEG 4.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.
