hello there,

I have noticed some motion artifacts especially when watching sports live hockey. It appears that those motion artifacts are only visible when the camera is moving and not when it is steady or focused say on a particular player. It is really annoying to watch.

Does anybody notice that too?
It happens frequently for me on some channels, but especially on FSN Ohio.

Is this something I should be worried about, or is it a known issue?

thanks,
andy

Motion artifacts are more common during high-speed sequences on programming. This is usually the result of a level of compression that doesn't allow enough data to stream through to update the picture rapidly enough. On a slow sequence such as a news announcement, much of the picture is actually repeated over several frames. In that case, new information for each screen might not be sent and large portions of the picture which remains unchanged between frames will be sent a simple "ditto" command. So, instead of having to re-send every pixel for every frame, they send much less data.

In the case of fast action, a lot of the screen is changed every frame, especially in games like NASCAR and hockey where cameras follow cars or pucks or other high speed objects where the camera pans across an entire field rapidly. This results in data for the entire screen needing to be refreshed for every frame. From a digital perspective, this is very data intense. Programmers often have to balance channels that have lots of high-action (SPEED, NHL) with channels that have low action (TVGUIDE, Weather Channel) and send them down the same transponders to maximize the available space on each transponder. Unfortunately, some programmers will squeeze too much content onto one transponder and when a channel goes unusually high action it strains the pipe. This can happen with providers who are really pressed for bandwidth (cable) and they over compress the signals or if a channel that is normally low action suddenly goes high action and the program provider didn't account for it.

Motion artifacting is completely different from signal issues in general since motion artifacting is an issue that usually originates at the headend whereas as tiling is usually an onsite issue from site-specific trouble issues.

hi there...well what you are saying here totally makes sense to me. But I have a question to somebody then. If satellite companies know that sports channels are very data intensive, why would not they bump up the bandwidth or reduce compressions on those specific channels? Don;t they know that it is almost impossible to watch hi action sports channels they way they set them up? I am sorry but I could care less if the weather channel has a perfect picture, but when I watch sports I want to be able to actualy see what is going on..not trying to find the ball on the screen that disappears because the the data is too much.
how can somebody instill this into the minds of programmers at Dish network??
BTW, I have never seen such problem with cable TV. I guess they understand how bandwidth and compression are so much m,ore important for sports channels than satellite tv who do not understand that.
I wish I could get one of those dish network programmers in the room with me and make him watch tennis channel and then tell me if he enjoyed it or not..or if he could understand what was going on on the court.

so what is the solution..can somebody press dish network to increase bandwidth on certain channels?

Unfortunately, to this observer, Dish seems to have policy regarding compression relative to how large a metro area is. For example, there are countless complaints form many a good folk in lower population areas who complain of VERY bad LIL PQ with lots of Macro pixels.

On the other hand, while there is room for imporvement, the Los Angeles locals range form fair to good, depending upon what kind of display technology being used. Channles 4 and 7 (KNBC and KABC, respectivly) are especially good looking, for LIL's. Channels 9 and 2 (KCAL and KCBS) are somewhat sorry pictures. Satellite has penetrated very highly here in the L.A. metro area.

Can you imagine the phone lines being jammed and everything going down because an L.A. LIL looked as bad as many of our poor friends' LIL's who live in rural areas or small cities? In fact, on the rare occasions that there is a temporary issue on an L.A. LIL local (once audio was out for KNBC for about 5 minutes, just as one example), I've tried to call in and get a busy signal on all occasions. Now, I just don't do a thing because I know at least 10,000 other people are calling in for me.

It's all about the numbers. Fewer people to complain about LIL PQ where the cows come home than in krazy Los Angeles, California. It is not right. You folk in the boonies deserve at least as good LIL PQ as we get here in L.A. And even then, it aint so great lookin'. I forget how many spotbeams are used for LA LIL's (at least 3, maybe 4), but that is only because we have a ton of locals, anyway. Not all in English.

I think this might be because by the time technology came around for spot beams, Dish was pretty much done with "major" markets and moving on to minor and semi-major markets. I think the utilization of spot beams is where they started going for higher compression because of the varying number of locals in different cities. If a particular beam serves two cities but together they have one more than ideal number of channels for that transponder, they may well push the extra compression so they don't have to stuff a LiL channel somewhere else like a ConUS transponder. Market size might have something to do with it, but it is probably just less than ideal conditions such as where the spots are and LiL channel counts in each beam.

Motion artifacts are the plague of digital TV, especially over compressed digital TV.

The limited bandwidth available on OTA channels (6MHz) causes problems for high motion scenes on 1080i transmissions because there is too much going on on the screen for the data rate to keep up with, so the forward error correction fails to keep the picture at a high quality resolution and blocking occurs. The same is true for over compressed satellite signals.

I see it also on PBS (1080i) when they show close-ups of waterfalls or snow scenes. Areas of the picture begin to show squares of various shades instead of random motion.

The compression algorythm fails to correctly interpret areas of the screen where too much motion occurs.

The only way to fix it is more bandwidth or better compression algorythms (MPEG4 is an improvement if done right).

Market size might have something to do with it, but it is probably just less than ideal conditions such as where the spots are and LiL channel counts in each beam.

But the new spot beams were designed after that point. furthermore, high population and the economies are related. Perhaps a good example was his renewal of LA local Fox 11 a few years ago. It was a pretty public dispute because Fox wanted lots of money, and I remember that it was related to Fox demanding that Dish take another one of those Fox owned channels (possibly Fox Reality, I'm not sure). KTTV LA Fox 11 crawled the expected nasty rant against Dish.

Now, in smaller markets, Charlie has universally balked at such demands and let a LIL, even a big affiliate, be dropped. But I knew Charlie was gonna have to pay because he would have been flooded with calls and a mass exodus to Direct or even back to cable. I just knew he wouldn't dare allow a major LA LIL to be dropped (excluding the CBS/Viacom stations drop because Congress was in session reviewing LIL legislation and Ergan wanted to make a point with Congress, and it worked). In the past he had given discounts for LIL because a major affiliate was missing, and even installed OTA antennas in some markets so his subs could still view that local that was dropped form the satellite. Could you imagine the red ink if he applied that to Los Angeles?

Sure enough, on the subsequent Charlie Chat, Jim announces a new channel in the AT tier, (the FOX owned channel), and Charlie says, "Yeah, that was a lot of money. I know it cost us a lot of money, anyway" he said much to his chagrin. He continued with a somewhat glum tone looking at his peanut gallery, "Well, it was part of renewing our agreement with the local Fox station in Los Angeles, and that was a lot money, too.!"

While the LIL's PQ in big cities surely leave something to be desired, we just don't get the kinds of complaints on this board form big city dwellers that we do from our good citizens in the less populated parts of the country, and again, the Los Angeles/southern California area has the highest penetration of satellite in the country. And there are dishes (either Direct or Dish) EVERYWHERE around here!.

I may be wrong, but I still believe it is all about the high population and penetration and the economies that affect LIL PQ.
vegassatellite
Yeah, but if a LiL is served on a spot beam and they have no other useful programming to put there (can't put national channels on a spotbeam) and the space allows it, why over compress the channels on that spotbeam?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

remembers when ATT had stores and leased home phones

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

TrumpRx?!?

I went on Medicare recently (not an "advantage" plan) and my prescriptions at HyVee were very low out of pocket. The clerk said she was putting them on "Good Rx".

I take 10mg Rosuvastatin (Crestor). I was paying $34 for a 90day supply at Walgreens last year when I was on Blue Cross. My Blue Cross premiums were going up to $1800 a month this year, so I switched to an Ambetter Bronze plan (I think that's a Cigna company) for $825 a month. I now have a $40 copay for doctors visits which is fine as I usually only see them once or twice a year, so a huge cost savings. My Rosuvastatin was going to go up to around $90 for a 90 day supply at Walgreens and even more at CVS or one of the local family pharmacies. Ordering online thru my insurance portal from Express Scripts it's $0.74 for a 90 day supply.

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.
