With everyone speculating on what Dish will do next. Will the 2008 CES be the place where Charlie will let the cat out of the bag on what Dish has been doing or plan on doing for the remainder of the year of 2008?? Hopefully he will tell us that as many as 20 hd nationals will be added along will a large number of local hd. I have heard people on here say that he usually waits until the Dish Team Summit to make such announcements. Looking back at this past years CES it seemed many people were disappointed with Dish. Everyone then was wanting RSN's and Dish was saying they were too expensive. In the Spring many of us thoguh were surprised with our rsn being lit. With many channels already in hd and more to come, it should be an interesting first half of 2008 with Dish.

First off, more capacity is at least six months off, maybe more. And Directv is going to be there with another new satellite before Dish is going to get there. So things will get a whole lot worse vis-a-vis D* before they get any better

Since DISH is going to be weak in programming, I would not expect them to talk a whole lot about it, except to perhaps talk about Speed HD in relation to their NASCAR related marketing.

What I would expect is one or more of these:

1) Perhaps they will announce the implementation of software that will allow VIPs (222, 622, 722) to share programs on each other's hard drive across a single customer network. For me, this would be very worthwhile and would end my carping about programming.

2) Perhaps they will announce the rollout of software that will allow some legacy receivers (maybe back to the 500s) to be updated to decode MPEG4 SD. This is NOT an IMPOSSIBILITY. And if they could convert the whole system to MPEG4 without replacing all of the legacy recievers, this would also be a good thing.

3) Perhaps they will announce the integration of slingbox technology into 722s and 622s such that they could act as a Slingbox base.

4) Perhaps they will announce a deal with Netflx or Blockbuster or Voodoo of another online VOD service to have the DishComm 622s and 722s download movies directly from one of more of these services and be billed through Dish.

5) Maybe Dish will settle with TiVO?

There are a lot of possibilities on the Technology end of things. At their heart, the newer Recievers and DVRs are Unix boxes and integrating software for this kind of thing is theoretically easy.

On the other hand, Dish is in a Box from the programming end of things. I would not expect Dish to promote that fact.

Tigerfan dish has always been the underdog, they are not even sold in the major box stores. So how come they have 14 million subs? They must be doing somthing right.

I think you should change that to WERE doing something right. I switched just over a year ago due to D*'s lack of HD (sounds really stupid now) and better price for virtually the same programming. Since the switch, I can honestly say I have been paying more for less. I do not have a DVR, so at this point I could care less about new and improved receivers. I WANT HD PROGRAMMING, PERIOD!!! And I am not getting it. As much as I don't want to leave, because my experience with dish has been very good, I (and I think many others as well) cannot keep paying the same price as D* subs and get 20 fewer HD channels. That is why I went to dish in the first place.

I don't think calling Dish an underdog is adequate either. Directv has only 2 million more subs, although the difference will increase rapidly here soon. They are one of the top 5 satellite/cable providers in the US. They are doing just fine...that, in my mind is part of the problem.

The capability to do this exists. I don't know how far along Dish is on developing this, but DirecTV and several of the cable providers are ready to roll this technology and are being blocked by lawsuits from the content providers.

really as with everything else, there is no evidence that anything will be annouced at CES. This just seems to be based on optimism rather than fact.

I expect them to talk about:

their great dvr..
and their latest hd offerings.. nba & nhl
and their push to be #1 with customer service..
and the big new wills be.. *drum roll please*.. they are saving the environment with paperless billing..

CES is not really a place that Dish announces much. Really what we learn out of dish is when Scott gets some of the lower level guys they let out of the building to cough up some info. It just makes them more accessible when they are on the show room floor. I expect nothing more than we already know. 2 new satellites going up to provide MPEG-4 (probably from 77 and 86 single dish solution) in 2008 if the rockets hold together. Showing expansion to 100 channels of HD now and all the new markets they should be able to get on 61.5 when it goes to spot beam. The only new HD may be the announcements of the channels that come out from exclusive launch with DIRECTV to the rest of the providers.

Essentially nothing comes out of CES since Dish does not have to sell anything there. Dish does not have to demo stuff there to get retailers interested in carrying their lines of merchandise.

Team summit is where the real announcements are made. This is where Dish has to convince all the Dish retailers that they should stay Dish retailers and push Dish network. They have to do the selling here, they have to get this audience pumpped up to go out and sell, Sell, SELL! They want to have the marketing and sales answers to show they are going to take care of DIRECTV and cable. This is why the new system was announced at team summit last year. They had the FCC approvals for the slots, they could have said something at CES.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

remembers when ATT had stores and leased home phones

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Johnson built it, but without the Herschel Walker trade, it never happens.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

I haven't posted in almost 17 years. Over the air, sat, offline, anything-but-the-internet is still one of my avid pursuits. Been playing with offline tv viewing and offline web browsing. I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.
