I've been playing around for a coupla weeks with my 3ABN dish sitting on sawhorses and coax snaking out a window with some rags keeping the cold air out (mostly). One thing's for sure - if you weight down the plywood the dish is bolted to with some big rocks the dish is less likely to blow over! (found that out the hard way). Anyway I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking of a motorized setup but have some issues to overcome that maybe some of the more experienced hands can help me with.

First off is where to situate the dish. Easiest would be the roof of the house. Sitting up there the other day with a compass and my soda straw inclinometer I figure I can see way out to the Atlantic down to about 20 degrees elevation to the east but only to about 107W to the west because of the dang oak tree across the street. There is a spot on the ground next to the house where I can see G10 through a gap in the trees. So one option would be a motorized to see 50 something W to 107W plus a fixed dish for G10.

Q#1 If I went this route would I be missing very much FTA-wise between 107W and 123W?

The other option is to put the motor on the roof of the garage, which is detached and sits maybe sixty feet back from the house. Since the garage is a lot further back from the dang oak tree I can see over it and would be able to see everything on the arc higher than 20 degrees elevation both to the east and west.

The issue here is the long cable run, probably a good 110 feet of cable to the house and another 25 feet in the house for a total run of 135 feet.

Q#2 Is 135 feet too long for motor control?

Q#3 If I have more than one LNB on the motorized dish am I better off using 22Khz switches or diseqc switches at the end of that 135 foot cable run?

I found an article about burying coax here:
Coaxial Coax Cable and moisture and burying

So I'm thinking a belt-and-suspenders approach might be to use RG-11 coax rated for direct burial, but run it through PVC instead of directly in the ground. RG-11 because less line loss and better chance of getting enough current out there to turn the motor (14 gauge for RG-11 as opposed to 18 gauge for RG-6). Direct burial as opposed to regular RG-11 because it will last longer subjected to moisture outside. Run the coax through PVC to provide more protection to the coax both from salts in the ground and from an errant shovel when I'm out there gardening.

Q#4 What do y'all think about my comments about burying coax?

Q#5 All things considered am I better off on the house roof or the garage roof?

I'd definitely go with PVC if possible in case of future cable runs. You'll always want to add more cable, it invariably happens :)
T
My latest thinking is to run the PVC all the way into the house and into the garage so that the entire coax run is protected from moisture and sun. On the house side I can punch a hole in the cinder block foundation wall and run the PVC straight into the basement, then before it goes underground include one of those rubber connectors with hose clamps so that the whole thing has a little give to it for frost heave, and also make it easier to fish additional coax through later if I need to. On the garage, the roof overhangs the wall where the coax will go in so I can just cut a hole in the bottom of the eaves and run the PVC vertically straight up against the wall into the eaves so it will look like an oversized downspout (much nicer having white PVC against a white wall than black coax against a white wall). Again I can incorporate a rubber connector before it goes underground on the garage side.

I'm thinking I would buy at least one 1000 foot spool of flooded RG-6 and cut it up into 6 or more 160 foot pieces and fish them through as I'm laying PVC in a trench across the yard. Each piece would be numbered at both ends so I can keep 'em straight.

Then the whole dish farm would get mounted on the back wall of the garage which is the best spot on my property for seeing the arc. All of the switches would go inside the garage out of the weather. Probably a T90 for the eastern end of the arc, at least one motorized, maybe I'll get ambitious and try to motorize the big Primestar dish I just got, a fixed dish on G10. Since all of the switches would be in the garage each run of coax would be for one receiver in the house. I gotta read up more on switches. Hmmm maybe six runs isn't enough, maybe I should lay 9 just to be safe, especially if I put an Invacom quad on the motorized. I'm thinking 4 inch PVC but maybe 6 inch would be safer.

Am I getting carried away, or what? Two months ago my knowledge of satellite TV was about zero. :what
R
You seem to be quite serious about the FTA 2 months into this hobby. Do you already have one dish and one receiver working yet? If not, I would suggest you to get on some hands on experience on FTA before investing in 1000 feet of RG6 which is quite expensive and digging into the ground which sounds a challenge to me. I installed multiple OTA antennas for HDTV many years ago and a fixed 76cm dish 3 years ago but did not do much after that on FTA. Now I am preparing to install a motor to get more channels. I have all my RG-6 directly exposed to the weather and never had a problem. Of course I am in California and don't know what snow or frost will do to the cable. And also do you really want a dish farm of 6 dishes? Even if you end up with a farm, I would leave the burying of RG-6 as the last thing to do when you know 6 RG-6s are all you need instead of the first thing to do. I don't think having RG-6 exposed to weather for a few month will cause much damage to it. After all RG-6 is designed to be used outdoor. Certainly FTA is not my main hobby compared to most people on this forum. I don't like non HD video but almost all FTA signals are.

Put in a simple system, and get your feet wet.
Come summer, you'll know SO much more about what's out there, what you want, and how you want to hook it up!
Instead of worrying about making mistakes or "the right decision" now, just get going.
In a few months, you'll be much more seasoned, and you'll know all the answers for your particular situation.
Plus, the weather will be better, too. ;)

That's good advice. For the moment I'm just trying out several dishes on the ground to see what I can get. Then maybe I'll progress to a motorized with temporary cabling. Then when I have things figured out better I'll think about the Big Dig.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

It'll only see two EHDs at a time.

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

As I understand it, the android is just the display signal from the hopper+. I can disconnect the H+ and plug the hdmi directly into the master hopper3.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:
  • Linux kernel
  • Android framework
  • Google TV / Android TV interface
  • Google Play Store for TV apps
Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.
H
Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Paramount lost a number of the Star Trek creative crew to other projects, like Ron Moore going on to BSG and "For All Mankind". I see Denise and Michael Okuda are also involved with FAM.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
