Samsung and LG Cautious About The Blu
March 25, 2008

Samsung, who always seemed like a big Blu advocate with the first player to market, seems to be scaling back on the rah-rah about the format. At least, according to this Korea Times article. In the story, Samsung execs say they won't be spending a lot of additional money on the format, even as Blu arguably still needs pushing to reach mainstream status.
Likewise, LG is going slowly on the Blu front, as consumers are showing some resistance to the format's relatively high pricing.
Samsung cites fears of generating few profits if it puts too much of its resources into ramping up what is now a nascent Blu business.
Although this seems like a knock on Blu, part of me wonders if these companies aren't just doing some venting over stiff competition from Sony. To date, Sony has basically owned the Blu-ray hardware market with sales of both its PS3s and BD set-tops.
Also, Samsung has been one of bigger set-top discounters, offering its BD player for sub $300 pricing over the holidays. The company could be angry that those efforts still weren't enough to catch Sony.

IMHO, Samsung has only itself to blame. Relatively inexpensive or not, the Sammy players are just too damned flakey with discs. The Sony BDP-S300 may be slow, but at least it plays discs.

I have said this before -- Samsung makes great tvs (I own the 4068ltn led backlit lcd) but when it comes to DVD players and now BD players they just can't seem to get it right. I do not know why? I believe that they just can't seem to stick with the rules and are always trying to skirt some issues and always get caught. I owned the 941 upconverting player and it crushed blacks and whites worse then the PS2! That was the last Samsung player I owned.

Your missing the main point on the thread, which is the collapsing support for BD among the manufacturers. I guess they are one by one seeing that it'll never be more then a niche format and its not worth it. Why else would the truest and first manufacturer start to pull the plug?

I can't believe how many people are still hoping and praying for Blu-Ray to fail. Move on for goodness sake.

If you hate Blu-Ray and will never buy a disc or player that's fine but rooting for BD to fail out of spite and sour grapes seems a bit childish.

At this point the only remaining parts of the "war" are fueled by 1) people who spent money on HD-DVD and are ticked 2) people who thought HD-DVD would win and can't admit they were wrong and 3) people who spent money on HD-DVD, thought HD-DVD would win, can't admit they were wrong and are ticked.

Yep. And they see no connection between their being wrong about HD DVD and their current predictions about Blu-ray. Can't separate their emotions from objective thought- just confusing the two.

Their audience is dwindling. Notice how traffic in this "zone" has declined so much? Fewer people care to read their nonsense. And perhaps more of us have decided to use the ignore list.

This "zone" for me, serves as a place to track the final demise. After that, the Blu-ray forum will serve to track BD vs standard DVD.

Some people's fantasies that BD will only succeed if they "destroy" DVD are just that. BD will do just fine alongside DVD. Eventually, they may outsell DVD. But there is certainly no need to drive DVD off the market. When I can buy the movies I want in BD, I'm happy. And more are available each day. Heck, I just learned today that Battle of Britain is coming out in June. Not a very popular title, but certainly one that I want.

Is it a crime to point out a flaw? Is pointing out a flaw "hoping and praying" for something to fail? IcePup just posted a thread in the BD cheer zone that said BD was now 20%. When this was questioned he started crying that we should take it to the warzone. This BD defensiveness has got to stop and let this be a free forum where no one is scared to post without fear of being attacked for pointing out a flaw or concern.

What collapsing support? Every manufacturer has new models coming out for the fall -- EVERYONE OF THEM including Toshiba! How do you see this as collapsing support? Heck 2.0 is not even out fully you just have two titles and only the PS3 to try it out and folks are complaining that it is not up to speed. If you are that fickled (lookit up) that you cannot at least wait 90 days to see if both the manufacturers and the studios can flesh 2.0 out before you condemm then maybe you better keep your money in your wallet. Early adopters don't whine this much! They make suggestions but they just don't cry as much as I am seeing. Toshiba sure did screw up the market by selling product so low that it allowed non-early addopters to get into a game they were not ready for! In the early adoption phase there are alot of changes and product is not inexpensive to own or operate. Toshiba and the HD-DVD group tried to circumvent the normal timeline for introduction of new product to the market and acceptance and they just about lost their shirts doing it. This is not how new technology is delivered for public consumption. You guys need to take a breath and wait a few months, I don't believe the BDA will disappoint you. If you are still spoiling over the loss of HD-DVD -- well then nothing will console you -- sorry.

This is the War Zone. The OP posted part of an article and gave his opinion on it. The rest of us gave our opinions. We are all free to disagree with each other here.

I'm not going to argue your new technology early adapter timeline, but why was Toshiba able to get so much right from day one? I will give them a failing grade for not having deep pockets to wheel and deal behind the scenes. You always seem remember that Toshiba lost its shirt, but you also always seem forget that Sony also lost its shirt during the war, cutting prices making it hard for other manufacturers(Sammy and LG) to stay in the BD business. Its not relevant what rules Toshiba may or may not have broken in regards to early adoption. We're here today dealings with today's issues and the article speaks for itself. Its hard for other manufacturers to compete with Sony's(patent holder) undercutting of prices.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Outside of gaming, would Joe Sixpack notice any difference?

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.
