Man you must really hate BD! How could you be so much in bed with Toshiba? I read and reread the article and I kept missing your point. I guess I am one of those people who know how to let go when it is necessary to do so. Seek help man! Peace and love to you.

Its not hate just to point out flaws, get your facts straight. His post ran down a crap list of reasons why companies would not invest in downloading. Companies are already doing downloads and growing. There are a few doing HD downloading NOW. "Seek help" in reading his post before you post newbie.

Your point has no ground, this isn't something that will happen in the near future, stop talking and enjoy what you have in the present.

I wonder what people like you do, wait for couple years to get a BD player once they realized ***** "I was wrong for the last 5 years", DL content ain't going anywhere for a long long time. So much wasted time.

Now, on a serious note:

Let me ask you a question, who is running the market?
The stores, Best Buy, WalMart, CC, and few other places, and stores will not let this happen.
How many people look on the internet for ads? Not many, people get ads in their mail from BB/WM/CC and other places, not the internet. How do you think companies will advertise their DL service/content? I am damn sure it won't be through any major retail stores.
How many people do you know that download HD (movies) content from the internet and watch it? Probably not many, at this age, most people buy their movies @ the stores.

This is conversation is not going anywhere.

The fact is BD is here to stay, and it ain't going anywhere, and your download HD content, well we can speak about it in about 5+ years because nothing huge is going to happen anytime soon.
Its fine by me if you keep denying BD, you can go back and keep watching your up converted movies on your DVD/HD-DVD player.
While the rest of us will enjoy our BD movies.

Your friends joined the Blu boat, look at vurbano, all the crap he talks, he still got a BD player, also Elstevo got himself a BD player.
I am sure many will join the Blu boat sooner or later after they realize there is no other alternative for now other than the titles that are already on HD-DVD and up converted DVD's.

I dont see flaws is BD. Stop the price C$%p...when DVD players first cam out I paid $350 for a single disk Toshiba player.

That was then, this is now. DVD had nothing on the horizen ready to pounce on it. BD, OTOH, has new technology ready to gobble it up.

BD has a very small window of opportunity. If they keep prices high, it will relegate itself to a niche market.

All it takes is a single lucrative deal with a movie studio to hit a nice price point per movie, or something that allows for buffet viewing of a catalog, with allowances for re-viewing to not overcharge a viewer for something they've already seen and online downloads would become more popular than BD this year.

Yeah, I said it. World peace could also happen too.

In my opinion, bandwidth isn't the problem, it's the value that studios are trying to retain in their movies. They don't want you to buy Blu-Ray movies in a bin for $5 at a value retailer, they want you to pay $30. All it would take is a service to wreck this mentality. For the music industry, there was a time when owning the disc and materials were a very big deal, I've been alive just long enough to remember that kind of stuff (at age 29). Then Napster happened. It wasn't legal, but it forever changed the music industry and they are still trying to catch up to the innovation. Despite being illegal, it made things like iTunes possible... people no longer needed to have the physical copy of the CD anymore, it wasn't worth the $15-$20 or whatever the studios were trying to charge.

It will take this kind of transformation to bring downloads to the next level. Do so and people will be happy to buy a portable version, a HD version, or a package of all 3 at a discounted price due to the digital delivery.... but $15+ is not that price.

Anyways, im in the middle of a 20hr trip home from my honeymoon, ending my tired babble here for now.

Lets keep this a discussion, what would need to happen for downloads to take hold, and what would the climate need to be for them to coexist?

Can we agree BD will never reach DVDs success? With the number of other alternative media sources out there now, the market for optical discs is just not what it is. THIS is the cause of the decline of DVD sales, not format future format confusion.

For What it's worth....

I have a HD D1 (HD DVD) since 6/06

I also have a PS3. (Blu Ray) since 6/07

I Rented most HDM movies (Netflix) and only bought a few. (Less that 15)

lately I have balked at the $25-$30 price tags on the HDM movies and have also canceled Netflix.

I prefer to watch at my leisure and found I was holding onto HDM flix for too long to make the $20 a month Netflix fee worthwhile. (and waiting for HDM flix to become available was another reason.)

For the last few moths I've been watching HD Movies from Premium HD channels (HBO, Starz etc.) and I find myself quite happy with the result for most movies. IMO Waiting a few months for them to appear on pay channels is another "Nail in the Coffin" for HDM,

For example I just watched "300" last night for the first time.

My HD D1 sits dormant and I use My PS3 for playing games.

I have hundreds of DVD movies. 95% of those I'll never watch again. A waste of money and space. An expense I'll not repeat with HDM.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:

All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
- Independent of record too! Bonus.
MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
I'm out of ideas.

Cons

Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
- Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
Going to start resting players?
- The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
- Resting players could make games dumb.
- Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Hughesnet cancelling email addresses

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

I had the same thing happen with my first ISP....never again did I use an ISPs email...got a Yahoo and Gmail.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

The new curated multiview is now live.
While on many of the sports channels and non sports channels there is a multi view option button. It will pull up a side bar with many different multi view options.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.
