Dear Forum,

I am interested if anyone uses a lightning surge supressor in line with the dish and a multi-switch? The ground block just doesnt do enough for my situation. I have seen some units that go inside the home and connect to the ground screw on an outlet and that is not any good at all.

Has anyone seen one like a POLYPHASER unit. What is the highest frequency used from the LNB to the multiswitch in the new HD antenna?

Lightning is and will be an issue at my install. I do not want to invite any thing into the house that should stay out.

I can't seem to reach the Polyphaser web site. I.C.E. has some devices but they are for 900-1500 MHz and won't work with the Ka-band satellites.

People were actually trying to help you. But, good luck with that now with your raving rant. If you have the Dish Mast grounded to a Ground block and that ground block wired into an active home ground you have done pretty much all that you can to ground the dish. The Coax is also going through the ground block which does "help" make it not a juicy target.

TBH if lightning hits your house, TV should be the last of your worries.

if you do happen to find an inline Suppressor it needs to be able to simultaneously pass 12-19v and 22khtz tones and be in range of 5mhtz to 2150mhtz (at this time) but again its a suppressor.

Also if you are not satisfied with the the way the system is grounded, contact a local electrician and see what else he can do, my guess is he may just beef up the grounding wires and possibly drive a dedicated looped ground rod for the dish itself.

But as you are probably aware if lightning does hit your house, even the houses grounding system is not going to handle the entire strike. Just as Power Surge suppressors are going to have a fail rate. Take a surge of say 150-300v can still take out a tv or other electronics vs a strike of 1mil + which will do damage.

As stated your best bet bet here would be to install a target for lightning ie install a lightning rod system

Wow, if the answers you're getting are not what you're looking for, don't ask the question.

or at least try to have a discussion don;t come in here stamping you're feet because you didn't get what you wanted.

Maybe you should try enclosing your house in a Faraday cage.

Of course, D* reception may not be very good, but your F connectors will be saved.

I own a computer business servicing business and residential customers. Some of you guys would be surprised at the ignorance out there in the residential community regarding lightning and taking a lightning hit. You are absolutely right, if you take a direct hit, your TV is the least of your worries. I have seen lightning take out a tree (not the one in my yard, but one in Grand Haven Michigan on US31 near a Blockbuster video during a major rainstorm). The tree was zapped right out of the ground! It was an amazing sight.

A few things to remember....

1- UPS and surge protectors are great to have. A UPS will keep your computer up during a blackout for a few minutes or keep it from being damaged during brownouts. I use the $60 APC brand UPS' on all my computers AND my cable and DirecTV DVRs. There is nothing worse than a 5-8 minute DVR reboot because of a 1/2 second blackout or a brownout. Talk about spoiling your TV time while you wait for that Sat box to come back up. Put it on a UPS. It is worth the investment vs. frustration.

2- Many power companies offer a whole house surge supressor that gets installed at the meter. You pay a monthly rental for these. OR, you can have one installed for a one time fee when you have your house built or wiring redone. The power company won't just sell you this $75 part, they want to rent it. An electrician will sell you one but I believe it has to be installed when the power is turned off feeding your house from the utility. So the electrician would have to jump through hoops to put this into an existing power install. Of course the power company has no problem getting this done. They just turn it off and rent it to you after install.

3- Surge protectors/supressors are great, IF, and I say IF, you do not take a direct hit. If the strike hits down the street, everybody is fair game in getting a surge in the immediate area. If you have the whole house protection at the meter, great, it will stop the surge before it comes into your house. If you have a surge protector on your electronics such as the TVs and computers, etc, it willl stop the surge from hitting them. But remember, these devices are only effective if you do not take a direct hit. If your house is hit directly, you are lucky if you do not lose your house. Even with a surge supressor, proper grounding, etc, you are going to lose your connected electronics. That means the appliances, computers, TVs, video games, etc. Surge protection will not survive a direct hit. Having that said, it is a very good idea to have surge protectors and UPSs on all your stuff. The whole house surge protection is a good idea too. Because the odds of a direct hit are very unlikely. If I hadn't had security cameras, I'd proably not have lost anything inside when my tree was hit. But it came in through the line. All my stuff inside is connected to proper surge protectors and grounding, but that doesn't matter when it came in through the cable that carries the security camera signal. It even went through my Slingbox and took out Ethernet ports here and there throughout the house. Crazy stuff.

4-Just remember- If a direct hit strikes your house, you are f*ck*d!

One more thing. When I made my insurance claim, it was of course legit, but I was very surprised to learn that the weather center keeps a log of all strikes in the US. The insurance company actually verified the strike to near perfect accuracy. She looked it up and saw for a fact that my tree, indeed was hit by lightning. I was amazed. So anybody that loses a $3000 TV out of warranty who is trying to scam insurance, think twice. Lightning insurance fraud would not work this day in age. They know whether or not lightning hit right down to the fraction of a second and within feet of perfect accuracy.

I was able to get through to the polyphaser site today. They have a device which are rated for the frequencies used (although possibly not with a SWM): PolyPhaser | Satellite System Protector. It would offer some protection but with a direct hit all bets are off, of course.

WOW skotty... didnt mean to turn you into a hater. I dont care about the equipment in the house. I wont make any comments about karma <snide>

Nextek

Finally after much searching, it looks to a better fit than any.

As far a direct lightning hit. A residence can survive with minimum issues if all transient voltages are addressed. There is an inital spike/peak of DC volatge and if the entire structure rises together and falls together there will be minimum damage.

I wont post anymore on this issue. This is not the place to address.

Maybe I read your comment wrong. Judging by the other responses, we all took it as you being nasty. It looked like you basically told us to keep our comments to ourselves if we didn't have the solution you were looking for. If I misinterpreted what you were saying, I am sorry.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That said, since '08 I have had Sat radio available to me ... I think I have turned on AM 3 or 4 times, just to see if its still there.

Fwiw, if theres a Major disaster or bad weather or whatever, the chances of me finding out about it by going to the AM side of the radio is SLIM and None.
Even FM, I haven't really had on since '13ish, I may turn it on from time to time, just to see if its still there.

Automation has seen to that. You can't get evening drive traffic reports where I live, much less disaster reports.

That goes for a lot of people. I've been advertising on radio for more than a decade now and am very familiar with this subject. While it is still a valuable tool, it has far less impact than it did just a few years ago. The best reaction I get is from a local Country music station....they play a mix of older and newer music and have a very big footprint.

Do you do any Ad's on Satellite ?

If Not, why not, because it's not Local ?

No, just regular FM stations. One is the country station I mentioned and the other is a Talk Radio station which used to get fantastic results but honestly, since the death of Rush Limbaugh, talk radio just doesn't do as well. There were two guys who had an early morning show which was hugely popular here in the southeast but one of them retired a couple years ago and the show just doesn't garner the same numbers as it used to.

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Seems like I remember that now, with my V9 I manually entered anyway on 105, easier for me to pick the channel later :)

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

[Give us a summary of what you receive with a 6-footer. I'm very curious.]

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

105W has some very strong transponders. I received more than four transponders using a 41-inch dish recently. See here.

The Westwood One Mux on 105W would likely be receivable, has some good music channels on there. It does scan in, but it's more convenient to manually enter the PIDs, check out Lyngsat for the channels: EchoStar 105/SES 11 at 105.0°W - LyngSat

I use a 10 footer (only C-band dish I have), but it's very strong.

No, I was actually referring to outside of the Top 8, but should have been Top 12 ...

I guess I should have looked at the bracket from last year first ...

I'm more thinking about them trying to expect a 15 to beat a 5 seed or there abouts .

And no teams deserve a bye! Injuries are the largest part of the game that you cant practice for them. Any team can suffer the worst injury at any position on any play. No favorites.

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.

I mean you get upsets all the time.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Yep, wonder why we rank the top 25 in 2 poles still? Do the ranking change much if they are unranked or have many loses? They sure do, any given day never take your opponent as a cake walk.....

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.

The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.
