Well I have spent the last few weeks of my spare time wiring a new house for my sister and some rewiring of my own. I finally decided with the cooler weather and seeing all the football feeds it was time to put the 7 1/2 ftr back up, but rain today stopped that idea, so I thought I would mess with the Primestar 84e I have that has a 75e arm on it.

My previous attempt with this dish was frustrating as I was right on the threshold of locking a signal on 123w. I could get KTWO( ABC) at about 66% quality and that was it Well I started at 97 and worked my way around the arc to see what I could get. It seems I can get everything within about 4degrees in either direction of my True South and then I start having problems. The Coolsat 6000's threshold seems to be right at 64-65% quality and as I move further from the south I come close but just can't get enough to lock. After a lot of tweaking I finally got 11720 on 123 at 66 to 67% quality but that is about it. I get a couple of scrambled but the other TP are all right at 60-61 and won't lock. I will have to order some lnbs so I can play around with this dish. The weather forecast is looking nice for the next week, unfortunately my sister will close and be moving into her new house at the end of this week. So hopefully I can get the big dish back up in the next couple of weeks.

The pictures below are of the wiring cabinets I installed and have been working on, weeknights for the past 2 weeks at my sisters home and mine. The first three are the video and data lines at her house and the last two are the cabinets I have had installed and just never got around to cleaning up the installation in mine. There is 4000 ft of QS RG6, 3000 ft of cat6 and about 600 ft of speaker wire plus 4 75ft hdmi cables in her house. Each room is set up for hdmi, component and ethernet distribution of anything they may want to do. I am really jealous of their southern exposure. It is perfect for as many dishes as one could want and can see the entire arc.

edit pictures are a little blurry because all I had was my pda at the time and it was late and I couldn't see straight by that time!

oh ok well sounds like its a bit short
hopefully i will be able to make a new arm

or make a small extension / adapter

problem with the extension / adapter is that it has to allow the feedhorn to freely look at the dish so it would involve removing the holder adding three inch extension and then the lnbf holder. so it might be easier to make a whole new arm.
osu1991
Hopefully I can find a little time to look closer at it this weekend.

I am thinking the arm is hollow, so if I can mold something to fit where it attaches to the dish and extend thru the hollow arm to support the arm and lnbf, then I wouldn't have to do anything to alter the arm itself
gabshere
i've been unable to build a arm due to some things that have come up .... but i hope to get one made soon....

in the meantime you should be able to zip tie a 2x4 block of wood cut to hold the lnbf just slightly higher than the original holder and lower the elevation 2 - 5 degrees and get by
osu1991
I actually started on that, but got swamped and am still swamped with work. I was getting close to zeroing in on the sweet spot. I had 64% quality on all the transponders on 123w, but couldn't get any higher when I got pulled away for work. I made a sleeve out of some 1x1 I had laying around from another project, but I stumbled upon the website for Impackt Distributing and they were selling refurb Primestar dishes along with other satellite equipment. I emailed about parts for the primestar / channelmaster dishes and I ended up ordering an arm for the 84e for 15.00. It is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Unfortunately I have 3 other packages all showing scheduled to arrive tomorrow and I will be out of town all day. Got to get someone over here to wait on them for me or I may have a stack of boxes sitting on my front porch.

I found a 1m and a 1.2m channel master dishes today, with trees and bushes overgrowing them at an old building in the middle of nowhere, looked like an old convenience store possibly. I left a couple of cards on the door and the mailbox.
osu1991
Success!! Got my 84e arm in the mail today from Impakt. The holiday delayed shipping a couple of days, but I am pleased with my first order from them. Put the arm on and adjusted the elevation a tad and my quality jumped from 66% to 89% on 123w. Now I can't leave the office because I want to play some tonight. This will have to come home this weekend or I won't get any work done during the day.

This should hit a lot of folks with a dose of reality. I can only imagine how much more common this will get as AI progresses.

I read several stories on this and most are clear as mud. They say a lot of the stolen bitcoin has been "locked out" and that everyone will be made financially whole. I guess time will tell if either of these statements are actually true.

The "Secure Asset Fund" had about $1 billion in reserves... in Bitcoin.

The fund started in 2018, so it may take a while to make investors whole, much less replenish the fund.

That's kinda what I was seeing but all the news reports are suggesting that all investors will be made whole immediately.
The other thing they weren't clear about was the BTC that was "locked out" of the system. I guess that means that the stolen BTC is basically worthless now because I don't see how it could be replaced....but there is a LOT about the crypto world that leaves me scratching my head.

A few clarifications... the ~$3B "locked" was mostly stablecoins (USDT/USDC). Tether and Circle can blacklist their own tokens, which makes those worthless to the thief. Bitcoin and ETH have no issuer, so they can't be frozen. That's the ~$2.4–3.3B the hackers still have, so the stolen BTC is very much not worthless to them. It was also spread across 10 blockchains, not just bitcoin. On getting made whole: SAFU is ~15,000 BTC (~$1.2B), and Binance says it'll cover the rest from company funds. Analysts don't see it as a solvency problem, and withdrawals are expected back within days.

The attack was pinned on North Korea's TraderTraitor group via a compromised engineer laptop. Like many hacks and compromises, that's old-school social engineering, not AI.

This is what scares me about cryptocurrency: there doesn't seem to be any oversight.

It seems more like politics than investing.

That's the tradeoff stablecoins make - a central issuer that can freeze funds, which is why half the loot got stopped. Bitcoin and ETH have no one in charge, so nobody can reverse a theft, but nobody can freeze your coins either. Stablecoins trade price volatility for trusting a central issuer.

Thanks....that fills in some of the missing pieces.
Why some of the money could be locked and the rest not was a gigantic hole is every story I read. I thought "well if they can lock up stolen BTC, then why couldn't they do the same thing to BTC that is used for ransom or some other illegal activity?". NOW I understand.
I miss the days when you could read a news story and now walk away with more questions than answers.

Where would you spend 6.3 billion in crypto without anyone noticing?..In today's digital world most countries are watching purchases over 10k

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

I didn't start it as a political statement and have no interest in the political BS of this country. Everyone wants to make everything political nowadays. This was just my rant over the outrageous increase in my premiums and how unaffordable healthcare is becoming to the average person here.

The number-one US state for EV growth, according to the June 22 Yardi report?
Oklahoma.

:eek

It has no ZEV mandates and "minimal" incentives, Yardi says, but also has cheap electricity, high multi-car household rates (so, for example, a non-Lightning Ford F-150 pulls their trailers), and a consumer base willing to switch.

Never realized that Tesla is losing to BYD at manufacturing too, which IMO is Tesla's biggest accomplishment and area of innovation. Nice writeup about the state of play and how we got here though. I have no faith that we're moving any productive direction though sadly, most changes and efforts feel reactionary rather than rooted in making use of the time being bought by tariffs, with few exceptions.

So: how are the cars so cheap, and what is being cut to get there? The best public accounting comes from the Rhodium Group, which compared BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor against Tesla's Chinese operation, a fair comparison because it removes labor costs and shipping from the equation entirely. Their estimate is that BYD builds a car for about $4,700 less than Tesla builds a Model 3 in Shanghai, roughly 15 percent of the Model 3's price. The breakdown is the interesting part. Direct government grants account for about $292 per vehicle, which is 5 percent of the gap. The biggest single factor is vertical integration: BYD makes about 80 percent of its top-tier components in-house, against 37 percent for Tesla, and that eliminates roughly $2,369 per vehicle in supplier markups. Lower overhead, meaning cheaper engineering talent and administrative cost spread across enormous volume, accounts for another $1,719. And BYD pays its suppliers on 155-day terms, against Tesla's 60, which is worth about $214 per car in float. When people say the Chinese advantage is subsidies, the per-vehicle number says otherwise. When people say it is slave wages, the Tesla Shanghai comparison says otherwise too. The advantage is mostly that BYD decided, twenty years ago, to make its own batteries, its own motors, its own power electronics, and its own semiconductors, and Western automakers decided the opposite.

Of course, the real scare with Winter coming is the insane cost of heating oil.

GM said its next-generation vehicle architecture will provide 40 times more computing power and 30 percent less wiring than before and will expand from the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ to its high-volume SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and fourth-generation EVs, which will be powered by lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic batteries

Despite the politicization and perceived consumer pivot away from EVs in America, GM needs to remain globally competitive, so it's doubling down on its fourth generation EVs, with energy-dense, cheaper-to-manufacture LMR batteries, more efficient motors, and state-of-the-art centralized computing architecture. With a stated goal of cutting the traditional four- to five-year concept-to-production time in half, GM is clearly challenging the concept of "China speed," which in the Chinese automotive industry can be as quick as 18 months from design to start of production. In the AI space, GM is smartly collapsing all of its marque-specific apps under the familiar OnStar brand, while providing more features—both on the phone and in the car—than it ever has before.
harshness
Let's tell it like it is. GM's EV efforts are coming from SAIC. The brain trust is almost entirely in China, and GM is hanging off of SAIC's shirt tails.

It is a lot like asserting that the Corvette was designed by Chevrolet when most of it came from the Cadillac CTS-V.

What is the purpose of connecting Alexa and the H3?
I stand up from my chair with my glass in one hand and my plate in the other, when a story I really want to hear comes on the TV. So I say, "Alexa, pause DISH", and it waits for me to return from the kitchen, at which time I say, "Alexa, resume DISH".

Or maybe, when I return with a full glass in one hand and a new plate in the other, I realize I forgot to pause to hear this good story from its start. So I say, "Alexa, skip DISH backwards 3 minutes", and I still get to catch the whole story.

I use this every day. Or until I acquire a third hand.
