I have been wondering recently whether or not Dish Network can survive as a company?

The reason I ask this question is recent past history is showing that it looks like we won't be getting our 150 National HD channels this year. We hear all kinds of unhappy customers out here in the forums complaining about various issues. Dish Customer service seems to have been sent overseas. Not much in the way any NEW national channels either in SD or HD.

Charlie Chats are more and more of a infomercial like like it was say 5 yrs ago where they announced whats going on in the company, programming annoucements (remember when years ago Charlie use to promise at least 1 new channel a month on his chats?), plenty of customer Q & A etc.

Now with the economy in recession tough times are ahead. Could Dish become another Primestar?? Could DirectTV be the only company in town in the future?

I'm not complaining I've been a customer of Dish since 1998 and to this day cannot say I'm really that dissatisfied with their service and never really had any major problems with them.

This is just questions I'm wondering and was interested what customers thought.

Please no flaming.

Millions of SD subs out there that don't care a lick about HD. They are still singing up hundreds of thousands a quarter (just not keeping up with churn the last 2 quarters). They will be fine for a while.

I'm certain there are a number of subs that don't care about HD but they are an ever shrinking segment. Think about it. These past couple of years virtually every TV sold was an HD TV and going forward, HD's are all that's being sold and people are not going to settle for SD content when they have an HD TV.

Add to this the statement by FOX a few days ago where they announced a 2 year program to go completely HD by Jan 1, 2011 at which time they will eliminate all SD transmissions. This surely will cause the other networks to follow suit to keep from being left in the technological stone age.

The time when HD becomes the standard and what we call SD today will be regelated to what will be called low resolution third rate fare (probably used primarily for infomercials) is closer than you think.

There is a point to my rambling consistant with the title of this thread and that is that long term if Dish is to survive, while it would be nice to be the HD leader it is necessary to be at least equal to Direct in the HD content area.

There are also lot's of people who have not bought a new TV in years. My father likes to brag that he has never bought a new TV. Also, a lot of people buying HDTVs wouldn't know HD if it hit them in the nuts. Or, they don't care. SDTVs have been hard to find, so of course people have been picking up HDTVs. That doesn't mean they are immediatlely going to go shopping for additional HD programming.

And while Fox is broadcating in digital HD, it is very easy to downconvert to SD. pleanty of customers ale already getting that as Dish and Direct prepare for the digital transition.

We are the early adoptors, and we are the most educated. Just becuse HD adoption will increase doesn't mean everyone will educate themselves to our level on HD.

Sorry but I don't share your opinion of lot's of people plunking down hundreds of dollars for HD TV's and being too stupid to realize what they've bought. A report indicated that HD TV's are already in more than a third of all households and that it will increase to more than 50% by the end of next year.
Even your father will eventually end up with an HD TV. It's only a matter of time and in your father's case, how much time is a matter of how stubborn he is.

Plenty of people have been plunking down hundreds for SDTV for a very long time. If a third of all households have HDTV, why aren't a third of all Dish customers HD customers? Instead, it's more like 10% (at least last I read).

Plus, there are plenty of people that have never plunked down hundreds for a TV. As others buy HDTVs, I'm sure my father will keep finding SDTVs at garage sales and in the classifieds to keep him going.

People are idiots. Myself included. It's a fundamental rule. we are just idiots about different things. There are millions of technology idiots out their that will keep SDTV going for long time.

, why aren't a third of all Dish customers HD customers? Instead, it's more like 10% (at least last I read).

.

As reported in Multichannel News HDTV Sets Now In More Than One-Third of U.S. Homes: Survey - 11/12/2008 10:55:00 AM - Multichannel News HD penetration is in more than one third of US homes, not 10%.

.
While I dont doubt that a third of US homes now have HD tvs, he was saying that around 10% of Dish customers get HD programming. Two different subjects. Again, just because someone has a set, does not mean they have HD programming. I look for the number of homes with HD sets to go up dramatically if for no other reason, thats what is being sold these days

Edit: From your own link:

"About 40 million U.S. households now have at least one HDTV set, and LRG forecasts that this number will double over the next four years," Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, said in a prepared statement. "While more people than ever before have HDTV sets, educating consumers on HD programming remains an issue."

I don't know the exact numbers of hd subs for Dish either but there's Direct TV to consider as well as all the cable and other providers. Then there are people I presume that are content with HD OTA and/or Blu-Ray. Whatever that number of people that receive/watch HD is, one compelling certaintly is that number will never shrink and is only getting larger.

I totally agree with you that the number of people with access to HD and that watch it will continue to rise. No doubt about that whatsoever. I still stand beside my point that as of now, there are many people that have these sets that dont understand or have HD content.

But again, as you said, that will change with time

yes there are complaints. "All kinds"? Sure. But if you are limiting yourself to info gathered here , you're not getting a very broad sampling.
SO what if Dish is behind on the Do you not think the possibility exists that the company is working to that goal? And if you pleae, show the thread where Dish claimed 150 HD chanels by 2009...Thank you in advance.
I can save you the time. The ads say "up to" 150 HD offerniongs by the end of '08...
Relax...Your HD is coming.
No this will not be the end of Dish. Nor is it sending Dish in that direction....

Totally agree with this. It will take time for people to be HD experts. Thus, it isn';t as urgent as we think for providers to add HDTV.

While in Feb, many will be pissed with letterboxing and maybe then buy a HDTV, they will probably be content to just stretch the image, and won't bother getting HD. If fact, I bet most won't realize it's not HD.

Even if people finally start subbing to HD packs, they will probably still stick to cable and be content with 20 or so HD channels. I stand by what I said: People are idiots.

1) those who are clueless.
2)those who think they know but are afraid to try so they call Dish when they get a new tv
3)those who are clueless and try to hook up their new tv and fail. Then they call Dish.
4)those who are sure they know, and try to tell the tech how to do the job
5)those who think that because they purchased a satellite system and pay for programming that precludes them from paying for custom work.....

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

I'm sorry, but the Dock is optional. I run Arch Linux, and tbh, as someone without specific, niche needs like your radios, the GUI is really no different, and I worry less about my OS being infiltrated. The OS is less bloated; there is no OEM Software that I have to dig through to disable or remove; coding is not a massive pile of problems that require constant patching, and if there is a problem, I can easily fix it myself (ChatGPT is great for Linux or any programming issues), and setting it up to look the way I want it to does not take days/weeks. It takes barely an hour. Not to mention, a cold boot takes barely 30 seconds from Power on the being fully booted.

Ubuntu is a joke, btw

TRG would back this up better than I can, I'm sure
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!
