I live in one of those areas beyond the digital divide, where the only option besides dial up is satellite internet. I have had Wildblue for three years. It has always been spotty and frequently slow, but has gotten worse in recent months. There are a lot of trees where I live. The dish had been installed at the bottom of the roof with a long slope. I considered that trees had grown and were obstructing it more now. I asked-how about doing a site visit? Our dish-network dish is at the top of the roof. It seemed logical that the Wildblue dish would stand a better chance at the top. The tech eprson said that it wouldn't be worth Wildblue's time to come out. This after we were on theri most expensive plan for 3 years.

I did some research, and took a chance on Skywayusa. They couldn't seem to find an installer in the area, so today I had our handyman install it (at the top of the roof!). My husband and I signed on for the most expensive plan, $79.95 a month, which is the same as we were paying with Wildblue.

It is faster, a lot faster. I just did a speed test that came out at 1700KB, faster than the plan promises and much faster than any test we did with Wildblue, which was averaging under 400 even with the fastest plan, that is, when it was working at all.

It is sunny today. It remains to be seen if Skyway also performs better in cloudy, rainy, foggy conditions (we get a lot of fog). which is one of the advantages they list on their website. I'll post again when I have that data to share. The self-install seemed like a hassle, but it gave us greater control on the dish placement.

Meanwhile, I am looking forward to resigning from Wildblue. The tech person commented in the last call that we had been loyal customers. I don't know about loyal-we didn't have any other option. I know all the satellite internet companies get a lot of complaints and i don't expect that things will be perfect with Skyway, but it sure seems to work much better and faster than Wildblue did for us.

I didn't know about Hughes satellite being at a higher elevation than Wildblue. If I'd known, I might have given them a try. It is good information for their company to get out there, especially in rural areas with trees and ridges to contend with.

In the meantime, I have been pleasantly surprised by how well the Skyway connection is working. It would have been nice to not have to sacrifice a phone line to get on line. Cori

Yup. It's a simple exercise in plane geometry. Think of the isosceles triangle. Wildblue has service from only two satellites, both orbiting over the equator above 111W. Skyway sells service from only one satellite, orbiting over 105W. Hughes on the other hand sells service from over a dozen satellites orbiting between 72W and 127W.

I don't know where in FL you live, so I'll pick Tallahassee as an example. From there your dish elevation for Wildblue service is ~44 degrees. Skyway is a bit closer to Tallahassee, so dish elevation is ~48 degrees. But HughesNet service can be had from several satellites requiring dish elevation of over 54 degrees. Whereas tree trimming can be required to prune back line of sight issues with Wildblue and SkyWay, with HughesNet all you have to do is get your account moved to a satellite that your dish can "see" better.

Thanks and --Where do old satellite dishes go to die?

Thanks, Greg, that's good to know. I have neighbors that have been waiting to see how our experience goes, and I can pass that info on to them. But I live in Northern California, not Florida. I don't know if that makes much of a difference.

I've retired my Wildblue account. Now they offer me a free service call. I do wonder how much of the change for the better in my connection (from Wildblue to Skyway) is due to the dish being at a higher elevation and how much is due to the combo of dial up for uploading and satellite for downloading. Any guesses out there?

I signed on to Wildblue when you had to buy the equipment. They are willing to buy back the modem for $50, but not the dish. Since they have gone to lease only on their equipment, I don't imagine there is much of a market for a used Wildblue dish? Is that right? Does anyone recycle them? Any info on this appreciated. I would have started a new thread, but couldn't find the link to do it.

Cori

I wonder if they want you to sign another commitment if they come out to do the free service call. Maybe they should notate the account, if they will do so, that you shut the service off and switched to SkyWay due to them not wanting to fix their problem. You could give it a shot if they don't try to make you sign a commitment and compare the two services side by side and see which one works better but I'm sure SkyWay has you under a one year contract now.
grohgreg
I live in Northern California, not Florida. I don't know if that makes much of a difference.
Actually it does. I obviously looked at APSCs geoloco, and mistook it for yours. sorry. From northern CA, it's more likely a function of azimuth (east/west orientation of the dish). Again not knowing your specific location, let's use Redding. From there to Wildblue service takes an Az/El of roughly 163/42. To Skyway it's about 154/40. And of course Redding folkscan be assigned to any of 14 HughesNet satellites. Note the Skyway elevation is actually two degrees lower than Wildblue from Redding. So looking OVER the trees wasn't the issue. But the azimuth difference is 9 degrees, meaning the Skyway dish might be "seeing" around the trees.

I realize this is all academic now that you're jumped ship. But perhaps the object lesson in azimuth and elevation may come in handy when your neighbors decide which way to jump.

Oh, and without the modem - the outdoor unit is pretty useless. But there is a market for used TRIAs on eBay (that's the electronic stuff on the feedarm). And shipping a TRIA is a heckuva lot less hassle than shipping the whole ODU.

It looked like there were at least three iterations to try to match up to the given individual deficit, and a test to take to determine which would best help. But at best they seem a marginal measure and not practical.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'd probably say when they came up with their M-series of processors with integrated memory. That allowed Apple to get away from the inefficient Intel CPUs that were limiting their notebook computers.

Working well with about 3-4 days battery life. New BT and Wifi range is much better than the 15 I had. It doesn't seem any faster but probably is. The Camera shooting video has amazing image stabilization.
Only observed issue is once in awhile, the screen loses touch sensitivity and requires a soft reboot and delete the many open apps to fix. This happens about once a week since buying it.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

If you know the folks who have fiber, strike a deal with them and pay for a Wavlink AX3000. I've installed these for customers and they will light up abut 10 acres. One customer is linking her security camera to it and the cam is about 1,000 ft from the radio. These are also usable as repeaters so you could install one at your house for that purpose. Heck, offer to pay 75% of their monthly bill if that's what it takes.

People that Own the poles ?
That would be ATT Or the Power Company depending on the situation ... easily figured out by looking at the Tag on All Poles.

Might not be an option, due to easements. I can't see governments allowing public property (easements) for exclusive use by just one company.

Just did the update check manually about an hour ago with Hopper 3 on H713 and Hopper Plus on P15403.
Noticed something new when I clicked on the Update Software, it presented a pop-up as follows:
"Update software 1573
Update later Update now Cancel" with those three buttons which did not exist before.

After updating the H715 - I guess there must be major bugs as both H709 and H714 were skipped.

So here are the issue(s):

Issue #1
It did fix the problem with H713 which was:
"One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software."

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency so H711 and H712 were working without that dependency but H713 brought it back which is fixed in H715 as no P versions or Android TV versions are shown in the Available Joey Software on the main Diagnostics screen.
However, with that said, the TECHNICIAN SETTINGS, Download ATV (Android TV) Files is not working correctly as the Download ATV Files shows:
"Download ATV Files 3000
Download in progress. This operation will be
complete when the files are downloaded

Joey 4 : P554- Failed
Joey 4 : P55403- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P654- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P65403- Complete
HopperPlus : P154- Complete
HopperPlus : P15403- Failed

OK"
From what I can tell, each of them goes through the Downloading followed by the Processing stages first before it goes into the Failed or Complete stage. It seemed to be going in a loop earlier as it will start downloading from the first item being the Joey 4 each time before it eventually stopped. This is the first time ever since 2023 that I had ever seen it Failed.

With that said, the dependency appears to still be required for the Hopper Plus to check, download and update the Android TV software as it says Failed, No Target when going to "Device Preferences", About, "Software Update"

Issue #2
Still cannot cast to Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus(Software P15317) with the Hopper Plus "Google Chromecast Built-In" feature" as it shows up as a casting device when the Hopper Plus is online and disappears when the Hopper 3 and Hopper Plus does it's nightly reboots but times out when one tries to cast to it and always shows up as Not available in the Google Home app on Android phone. No one else anywhere on the internet had confirmed whether it is working for them or not. Per brittanygarden in DM on October 16, 2026:
"We've been working with Google on this. We have a fix on the Google side projected for Q4. I know we're in Q4 now, but I will try to get a narrowed down timeline for you."

I have not been updated to 715 yet. I am on a QE "Beta" or Test version that did fix the audio issue. The last communication I had with the team mentioned that the full release of that fix was likely in December.
It would be nice to know if 715 does solve that issue of no audio when Dolby is ON, during 4K HDR events.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Another supplement I wanted to mention was Luteolin. This has two major benefits
1) it helps improve your memory
2) it has a unique anti-greying affect. Saw a Daily Mail news story about a year ago I guess and they were testing different antioxidants on black mice and found that the ones they gave luteolin to barely greyed at all where the control group greyed normally. Has something to do with this stuff preventing the hair roots from becoming damaged which is one of the causes of going grey.

Now I've been taking this supplement for a long time and at 62 I barely have any grey hairs at all.
If it would only help improve my ability to remember NAMES!!
