Should I just wait a while to see what kinda offer they make us TurboHD subscribers or should I go ahead change my programing to get the HD channels not added to the turboHD packages. Either way it sucks, 49.99 to 67.99 is a big difference in my book. At this rate Direct will be close to having a better deal.

you hit it right on the head-if we are on turbo we are not watching much or ANY SD. So.....we won't be watching you SD channel even if its on our system. We want HD!

Advertising is sold based on the number of viewers who have the potential to see that channel. That's why Fox got into the huge standoff with E* about not being in the lowest programming package, because it reduced the number of subscribers they could report to advertisers.

That makes no sense. Why would advertisers care 'x amount of people COULD be watching this program'? They want to know 'Y amount of people WATCH this program'.

No, Fox (or anyone) would want to be in the lowest programming package, because more people would watch them. Let's say there's 100 subscribers on "basic", 100 on "moderate", and 100 on "high". If NETx (like it?) is on the "high" package, only 100 subscribers can possibly see it... and let's say 10 actually watch... that's 10%. However, if NETx is on the basic package, now you've got 300 POSSIBLE viewers. If 30 now watch the show, that's still 10%... advertiser money is still the same.

It's an important statistic that exactly 0% of TurboHD and HD Absolute subscribers are viewing commercials on Fox News.

We're talking about the dynamic of big companies doing deals with big companies. The Viacoms of the world want to present the greatest demographic and ratings share possible when selling advertising time to companies like Proctor and Gamble to get the biggest overall deal possible. P&G likes the arrangement because it gets them significant exposure while eliminating overhead in the number of advertising contracts they need to negotiate, and Viacom likes these arrangements because they mean big solid chucks of revenue.

Each channel has it's own composite ratings value, so what Fox, Viacom, Disney, etc want to do is package as many channels together to present the highest overall viewer share to their advertisers.

These companies also know that some channels are more essential to viewers than others, so they dangle those as bait to get the cable / satellite companies to play along.

Notice how DirecTV, ATT (U-Verse), Verizon (FiOS), nor any cable company has been able to negotiate a "HD Only" package the way Dish was able to? That should be your first clue how much the actual content producers are against this type of plan.

But "potential eyeballs" or "percentage over a bundle" of channels are both false metrics. This means one set of big companies is literally selling a lie, while the other set of big companies is throwing their money away.

The second set should be holding out for a valid metric, such as actual eyeballs at a given time on a given channel. Allowing program providers to air commercials on any channel whatsoever (HD or SD or SD-only) regardless of actual viewership, is about as stupid as allowing them to air the commercial at 3AM. Also mixing up HD customers with SD customers is stupid because SD-only customers aren't buying much of anything these days. Smart advertisers should be specifically going after HD customers who are still buying things.

Where is Nielsen in this debate? Don't they provide valid metrics, broken down by real (not potential) HD and SD customers?

No, not really. Most of the nielsen ratings are still done by paper survey, which is a terrible method to gather data; people lie, exaggerate, etc. The best method they have, the little boxes attached to your tv, is only used in about 5,000 homes. Look up the nielsen critiques, and you will see the issues. I feel like the providers would be the best source of info for hd vs. sd, but who knows.

TiVo also provides real ratings metrics/statistics.

I just started a one week diary and all I can say is you're right. It's clear they don't know what to do about DVR's. Their instructions say one thing, but the diary says another regarding where/how to enter it. Like the typewriter, these paper diaries have become archaic fast.

This should hit a lot of folks with a dose of reality. I can only imagine how much more common this will get as AI progresses.

I read several stories on this and most are clear as mud. They say a lot of the stolen bitcoin has been "locked out" and that everyone will be made financially whole. I guess time will tell if either of these statements are actually true.

The "Secure Asset Fund" had about $1 billion in reserves... in Bitcoin.

The fund started in 2018, so it may take a while to make investors whole, much less replenish the fund.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

I'm pretty sure the most you can get is seven.

What America can't afford is the payments on $80,000+ pickups and SUVs and $40,000+ crossovers.

Finished season 3 last night. Still one of my favorite shows.

Anyone else wonder if there might be something else going on with Callum? Seems to me he has too much access to Russian intelligence.

Great ending, but it ran in circles most of the season.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Might be worth just to ditch the hopper plus. No issues here on h713

Buy a roku and dump the hopper plus you'll be better off. If you have a smart tv you don't need either one. No hopper plus here and no issues!!!
