This is new to me, but may be old news to some. Either way I thought I would share.
I opened our pool up a couple of weeks ago and went through the usual buying salt, ph increaser, calcium, stabilizer, ect. I had about half of a bag (25lbs) of stock salt left over($6.00 from the farm supply store for 50 lbs).
Anyhow I came home from work one day about a week and a half ago to find the wife sprinkling handfuls of salt on our gravel driveway. I asked "What in the world are you trying to accomplish?". She said, " I am eradicating the weeds and grass from the driveway". I told her she was crazy & that would not work. Well, I am now eating crow because the grass & weeds are DEAD, gone, kaput.
She only used probably about 10 lbs on 30' x 60' area. I am really impressed with the results. I have done a little research and found that salt was used as a war tactic in WWII on peoples crops, they say it killed everything & nothing would grow after that for a long time.
Anyone have pros or cons on salt as a weed killer or have we been duped by the chemical factories into buying their expensive products.

If you would have done a little more you would have found that this tactic was used by the Romans to destroy Carthage and scatter the population after the third time Rome was attacked by the Carthaginians. They laid waste to the lands and made them barren by salting the lands. They actually plowed salt into the fields.

True. The other problem is, this tree will more than likely die and break apart in pieces over time. It probably will not all drop at the same time. So chances are, the posters problems will be worse. A limb here, a limb there, ect.
Cutting it down, or trimming the branches over his/her property would have saved him/her some trouble.

So since he won't deal with them, I will, in my own way. And again, I repeat, I do have his permission to saw them down. So I'm legally in the clear on poisoning them. I'm just doing it in a subversive manner.
Unfortunately getting verbal permission and getting it backed up are two different things.
Since the deed is done, I think I would try to get the guy to sign-off on something in writing for CYA legal purposes, worded as "....permission to use whatever mechanical or chemical means necessary to remove encrouching trees, limbs and branches creating a meanace and danger to property owned by...." or similar verbiage. If he questions "chemical means", reply that you read that to completely dispose of unwanted trees one should use a chemical for treating the stumps to insure the tree doesnt sprout sapplings and cause more problems:rolleyes: Adding something like "[Dee_Ann] agrees to accept responsibility for all damages and expenses (you already are anyway) which may occur to [Dee_Ann's] property as a result of performing acts necessary to eliminate the encrouching tree problem. Then you can present it as "just trying to protect both of ya'lls interests and avoid any future legal issues" inferring that you may persue legal recourse if he doesnt agree to put it in writing. If he takes you to court after that you have his written consent for your method.
He is responsible for any and all damages cause by his trees. You may have to document the less major (car/windshields issues) and expenses and be prepared to defend your actions if/when the time comes. Damages to your home or other structures are worth pursuing in court, your homeowners insurance will love to do that. Faced with an estimate for current and future damages he may elect to eliminate sources of potential future damages on his own. Yuo can add the court costs to your small claims suit and if you win and will likely get that awarded as well.
The utility co should respond to a report of branch encrouchment on their right of way, but if it is the secondary side feed and is not on their right of way that is "in danger" they may tell you you are on your own. Again that is ammo for future damages, but it sounds like the guy doesnt really care about what might happen until it does.
You should probably address any "leaning/cutting to 4' stumps" you can now, even if it means paying to get it done or having a friend (your helpful neighbor?) etc, do the cutting and piece-milling the disposal of the refuse. Take some "before" pics to support you leaning/encroaching complaints for future reference, especially before you cut anything.
Be aware, if one of the injured or dead trees are still standing during the next major storm and it falls on his or you structure, the insurance companies may find you responsible and refuse to pay.
Some people say fences make the best neighbors. Personally I prefer two fences with a 30' wide bar ditch between them and an acre of land before that in each direction.....MY version of the perfect personal HOA  but I will probably die before I get it that good.
Yes foil hat wearing, conspiricy theorist, and anti-social.....

I saw a show on The History Channel recently about such, in the same time period, but I thought it was a Greek Ruler ( dont recall which one) that burned villages, crops, killed livestock and salted water source in his own kingdom as he retreated from the Roman army to stop their pursuit. It worked, but that is the ultimate "If I cant have it nobody can" attitude.
One no chemical (yet admittedly a bit radical) solution to weed control would be to gut out a microwave oven, re-assemble the transmitter components to a Ghostbuster looking apperatus, with a GOOD solid metalic reflector, climb in your radiation suit (every self respecting conspiracy theorist has one in there hidden bomb shelter, right?) and begin eradicating your weed problem.
Hmmmmm........ this might be a solution to that neighborhood dog that thinks my yard is his personal toilet. Wonder how close I'd need to be........
On second thought I think I'll just stick with my systemic chemical treatment for the unwanted foliage. For the dog, the 9mm Glock might be the best solution.

Hey Dee_ann I hope all goes well. I am not disagreeing or agreeing with your decision. I doubt very seriously they will bring out the tree coroner to see how it died.
No one knows your situation except you. I recently had 5 hybrid poplars cut down. It cost me $450.00 & that was me cleaning up the mess. I think I may have killed these trees by spraying roundup on the sprouts coming out of the root system over a 4 or 5 year period(another story). They were all dead, extremely tall & in such a place I could not fall them myself without going into my garage, the road or power lines.
The best neighbors are the ones considerate enough to to respect your privacy & property. Unfortunately we all have different opinions and ideals that cannot be easily agreed on. I believe if the trees are on his property he should be responsible for any removal or nuisance they cause.
I have had my own ways of dealing with my neighbor's neglect, mainly with their cows getting into my yard leaving deep ruts & destroying flowers & shrubs. I asked politely on many occasions for them to fix fence to prevent this. Their reply was always the same, "We have insurance, so if they damage anything just let us know & we will take care of it." After many times sprinting through the yard in circles chasing cows, I bought a BB gun. I now have those cows well trained! About 10 pumps with the BB gun and a shot to the hind quarters I do not have that problem anymore.
Every circumstance is different and it is very easy to be an armchair internet judge. What is wrong or immoral may not be to someone else, we are not in their shoes. To Dee_ann, do whatever you feel like you have to do. That is my 2 cents worth. :up:up
M
As I recall from my Mother Earth days (dont act so surprized yall....lol) Hybrid Poplars were bred to be fast growing (6-8 ft/yr as I recall) and only live 5-6 years. They were primarily grown for a renewable woodburners source. I was going to order some saplings and check them out, but further study indicated they would not fair well in the hi pH soil native to the area. If they were 45-60 ft and died I can see how you had a problem on your hands.

Both, and they just made it official with a multiyear deal that also includes TV Everywhere authentication for the DAZN app, and commercial distribution.

DIRECTV, the premier provider of digital television entertainment in the United States, and DAZN, the world's leading sports entertainment platform, today announced a new multi-year distribution agreement for local telecasts of Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and San Antonio Spurs games for DIRECTV streaming, satellite, and U-verse customers in each team's respective NBA-designated home territories.

These DAZN telecasts will be available to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the Choice or higher packages and to U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U200 or higher package. Each of DAZN's team services provides live pregame, postgame, and in-game coverage for the respective team.

In the coming weeks, customers who receive access to these teams via DIRECTV will also be able to login to the DAZN platform at no additional cost using their DIRECTV login credentials.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each of the five NBA teams to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS' thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on NBC (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?
