long time no post/been busy and such...

so today i got a letter bout new speed increase. sweet.

those with 7 mbps will have 10 mbps for free

and they will also offer up to 40mbps speeds! called lighting or something. not sure how that part works, it just says it will b available.

for 7 to 10mbps speeds, it will b on the 10th of December. not sure on 40mbps.

either way, after being with them since 05 and always a happy customer, i am glad to see they are upping their speed as they should for today's what should b average speeds.

was in ny, average speeds range from 20 to 40 or so mbps, with fios or cable vision...

well i am off for now...just wanted to share for those who did not know.

Tampa bay area info.

Well, OTOH, maybe not. Just tried a large file from MS downloads, and got around 100kBps--consistent with what I was seeing before.

More reading leads me to believe that one of Gigaget's methods is to open connections to multiple sites to get the requested file.

I suspect MS stuff is available only from them, so with the single download point, the speed was just as before.

lol I could have told you that program would not fix your problem, but i dint bothered.

have you tried my method?
jcarrera
I have not run the program you mentioned, which site says is for up to XP. I did read your assurance that it is OK for Vista, but please don't be insulted...it is such a simple change for the site to add Vista to the list of "works with" OS's, and they have not done so--that gives me pause.

I understand you have not had a problem with using it. That doesn't mean I wouldn't. I just can't comprehend them failing to say so since it would open up to thousands of additional people. It just doen't make sense. That leads me to believe there may be incompatibilities.

Vista's TCP/IP is a complete and total re-write from that used in XP. Any kind of tuning would have to be VERY different. So the program would have to detect the OS and internally run very different processes. That they would go to that trouble--to make such extensive changes to the product, then not announce it on the site, is incomprehensible.

The GigaGET program has helped immensely--just not on every download.

jcarra do you have more then one computer on the network? Is the issue happening on all the pcs?
jcarrera
A good way you are headed...

There are two linux machines on the router--a laptop (wanna buy it?) and a tower, and another Vista laptop. None are ever used for downloads, except for ubuntu and Windows updates.

The linux machines' updates, as I recall, have presented highly variable rates, from the 10's to the high hundreds, 800 to 1000. Don't know about the Windows updates, because the MS dialog does not show the dl rate.

However, as before, I don't think it is the network equipment due to the speedtest results--unless there is a protocol issue (slow on one type of dl, fast on another...e.g., http vs. ftp, or TCP vs. UDP).

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Is Dish like Iran in one way...they both will totally collapse by end of week :)

Other than the price, my experience with Boost is not that different than what I experienced with my years with Cricket. I will be curious to see what happens if SpaceX takes the reins.

Hate to say this no one is ordering Satellite TV. Both DISH and Direct no new customers.
After 25 years with centurylink DSL 80 speed i changed to Xfinity 300 speed for $50 wow lightning fast for streaming. Still have DISH 27 years with them. Americas 250 package for $103. What you think of superbox or vseebox for streaming is it legal?
Still dish is easy to operate and change channels. What will Charlie Ergen do with new super satellites with loosing customers with satellites and boost?

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

The fiber coming in to the house looks like 300 ohm old TV wire I think that is the weak point.

The weak point would be the connection between the outdoor feed and the indoor feed.

Copper lines are fine ... until it hits the AIR.

Charter lost 77,000 TV subscribers, the bigger news, it lost 233,000 broadband subscribers.

You would believe both companies would of learned from what happened with their TV services, which was ignore that cord cutting was a thing, allowed competition ( streaming) to get a foothold in the industry.

Now, in today's world, there are more households in the United States without a paid live TV than those with.

Both companies charge too much, delayed upgrades, all because they believed no one would leave them, only game in town, competition started with the 5G services, than Fiber, enough said, Cord Cutting 2.0 is here.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Rodney Dangerfield is great. One of his best one liners - "My wife likes to talk to me during sex, last night she called me from Florida!"

Jackie Gleason is another one of the greats.
