With the large number of threads here and elsewhere complaining about the various bugs and idiosyncracies of the 522, I thought it might be useful to try to compile them all into a single list.

To that end, I am starting this thread. I will list below what I think are the current outstanding bugs, followed by my wishlist for new features. I am sure I have forgotten or missed something somewhere, so please enlighten me.

I have created a webpage here: http://www.pepper.net/echostar/receiver/522/ that currently has exactly what I am posting here. I will periodically rearrange and update it based on the feedback in this thread and results of my other research. Each item on the lists will get its own page if necessary for more detailed analysis.

Why am I doing this? Several reasons: to vent the natural frustration that occurs when something doesn't work like it's supposed to; to get input from others that may be experiencing the same issues; and maybe most importantly, to maintain an organized list of what is most important to the 522 user community. It is possible that someone from Echostar may actually read this, and pass it on to the development team who can actually do something with it. My background is in software design and end-user support, and I can tell you from personal experience that logical analysis will get a much better response than uncontrolled rants. Anyway, here we go...

DVR 522 Bug List updated May 5, 2005 11:31pm

 DVR playback, and occasionally "live": audio dropouts, some audio sync problems, "peep", occasional pixelization
Everyone probably agrees that this is the most critical bug and must be fixed as soon as possible even if it means other fixes and features are delayed. This *may* have improved over the past few releases but is definitely not *fixed* yet. Note: there is some discussion that this *may* be fixed in L236. Only time will tell.

 Single Mode: If a timer starts up, audio is muted on the tuner being viewed until pause, skip, rewind, etc. is used.

 Since L232, have noticed that occasionally the name of a recorded program is actually the name of the previous program. [I personally have not noticed this since L234, is it fixed?]

 Search results: unsubscribed channels are included in the results. Needs at least the ability to cycle between favorites lists within the search results, so you only see the results you can actually use. Or the ability to lock out channels and have them not displayed (Thanks CygnusTM). [Someone please verify for me if this has been fixed yet, I keep forgetting to check it]

 Single Mode: Sometimes using swap takes you to a black screen with the audio from the original tuner instead of what was being viewed on the other tuner. The only way to clear this situation is to change channels and press swap a few times. Since L232, have noticed that sometimes the "banner" shows the same info on both tuners even when they are on different channels.

:) (Fixed in L232) Switch Test: There is not enough room to show the results of a five-satellite DP21/DPP44 cascade. Only the first four inputs are visible, though the configuration does work properly.

:( Caller ID: Under certain circumstances (I don't know exactly why) caller ID quits working. Some numbers that are recognized by other caller id devices reported as "unavailable" or "out of area"

:( Guide: If a 30-minute timeslot contains more than one program, only the last one is visible.

:( Name Based Recording: Scheduled recordings occasionally skipped as "already recorded" when guide data is the same from week to week.

:( Phone System: no apparent way to insert # or * characters in the prefix.

 Name Based Recording: doesn't work correctly with the 44-hour program guide; if you cannot get the EEPG from satellite 110 you will have problems with this. (Witschey)

:( System Info (Screen 1) the channel for TV2, if >99, displays as "10"

DVR 522 Wish List updated May 5, 2005 11:35pm
(things that can't properly be called bugs but it's arguable that they should work differently)

:D (Added in L231) Name-Based Recording

:( Single Mode: if two events are recording, there is only one record indicator lit on the front panel. In my opinion it should show one red light per recording in process.

:) (added in L231) Allow channel sort in descending order.

 Allow channel sort alphabetically or by category.

 Define a remote key sequence and a menu choice that will provide the same functionality as the front panel MODE button.

 Define a front-panel sequence that would provide the same functionality as pressing POWER on the TV2 remote.

:( Move caller id history from its current stupid location (setup) to a more logical place such as the unused main menu 9 (note: main menu 9 is the 625's VOD item?).

:D (added in L236, my wife thanks the software team!) Make caller id history a selectable list so you have more deletion options than "entire list"

 Main Menu options 3 (customer support) and 4 (dish home) seem just a bit redundant, one of them could be used for something more useful, i.e. caller id history.

 The INFO display should show time remaining for the current show or recorded event.

 Overall, but especially the Guide: Add an option for slightly smaller font size that would fit more information on the screen. (As of L236 it appears that the Guide is using a slightly smaller font size.)

 Overall: How about some different color schemes as well (Thanks CygnusTM).

 DVR Events: Move the column of buttons slightly to the right, use the freed space expand the box, allowing more space for the list of events.

 DVR Recording: If multiple recordings are scheduled on the same channel, copy the last "four" (1 min early + 3 min late) minutes of what it just recorded, and tack that on the beginning of what it's recording now (which started 3 minutes late), thus resulting in two complete recordings but only one tuner used to do it. (thanks to jabels for this idea)

 DVR Events: Add minimal file system support so that events could be moved into folders, and a folder could be protected. Example: Create a folder called "Stargate SG-1" to put all my episodes together and keep the kids from deleting them. (thanks to histry for this idea)

:D Enable the USB port to support a USB ethernet or wireless adapter and obtain an address and gateway from DHCP (connect to your home network!). Allow Dish Home, Pay per view reporting, and "Call Home to avoid additional outlet fee" features to attempt to use an existing broadband Internet connection to communicate with Echostar before tying up the phone line.(Sorry, I had to put one unobtainable feature on my list)

:D Enable the USB port to support Maxtor's QuickView Expander product line.

:D Put something on the dishnetwork.com website to support "remote" DVR programming from a web browser. This feature is not 522-specific but a lot of people were talking about it. This could conceivably be made available for ALL of the DVR models (and the non-DVR models as well, if you wanted to remotely tell it to change channels for some reason). It could either be a part of the USB/Ethernet stuff listed prior, or one-way from the web interface to commands sent to the receiver via satellite. (OK, now there are two things we will probably never see)

:) [Added in L236] Put a confirmation dialog before launching Dish Home in order to guard against accidental button press, dog stepping on remote, etc.

 Name Based Recording: look at history as well as recorded events when determining what has already been recorded.

 DVR Events: Should remember the last sort order instead of re-sorting to chronological order at every access.

 DVR Events: everytime a timer is setup, the defaults are 1 minute before and 3 minutes after. There should be a way to modify the defaults or have it remember what the user changed it to.

Ah, now that makes sense. I coulda' sworn that I had seen in there that it could be modified but I did not notice it was an "every time" thing. I agree, either there should be somewhere to change the default, or have it remember what you changed it to till you change it to something else.

I think what I was seeing is that I changed the settings for a recurring timer, then every time it recorded it followed that behavior BUT sure enough the next timer I setup was default 1 and 3 again.

Are you sure that's a bug or is it a programmed behavior that most of us don't like?

I think this would have to be consdiered a "Wish List" type of item because it is not like something is malfunctioning. Changing the pad times works just fine....but I (and I think other people too) would like to ability to decide what we want as default pad times so that we don't have to edit the pad times manually every time we want to record an event. For example in my case I am perfectly happy with NO pad times at all. IOW 0 minutes before and 0 minutes after; but since Dish is putting 1 and 3 minutes pad time I have to edit that EVERY single time I setup a recording event. I understand that some poeple are provably happy with 1 and 3 minutes and others may want something else; so why not allow everybody to choose their defaults and make every user happy.

I used to have a 508 receiver before I bought the 522, and I think remembering that on the 508 software it WAS possible to change the default pad times. However I am not 100% sure of it. Anyway with a 508 receiver who can check that?
B
The only pad on the 50x line is a check box (default=off) to start 1 minute early. Any other variation has to be done by editing the start and/or end times.

Another bug I've noticed: The Schedule page doesn't show all skipped events. It shows some, but not all. I especially notice this on Wednesday nights. I had both West Wing and Alias recording from 9-10 and Good Eats from 10-10:30. The problem is that Alias usually runs past its scheduled time. If that is the tuner used for Good Eats, Alias gets cut off. My solution is to skip GE at 10 and record it when it re-runs at 2AM. However, the 2AM showing doesn't show up in the list so I have to hunt it down in the guide and restore it from there.
This appears to be fixed in L2.36.

Edit: Nevermind. I just noticed you never added this to the page. [insert whiny temper-tantrum here] ;)

Bug: Edit Time doesn't stick

Let's say a certain program has several episodes being run back-to-back (I'll call it a marathon). I would like to record the marathon as one recording, not several individual recordings. So I create the timer for the first episode, then go back and edit the time to cover the whole marathon. For example the original time was 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM and I change it to 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. All seems well, as the info about the event shows 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and the guide shows the record icon on all the episodes.

However, when looking at the event info at a later time , the event has reverted back to the original time (i.e. 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM). The record icon is also only showing on the first episode. I've reproduced this problem several times, after first being "bit" by this bug and only getting the first episode of a marathon :(

I've noticed that this problem will show itself when checking the event info first thing in the morning, so it appears to happen when the program guide is updated overnight. It *may* occur at other times as well, I've not yet determined this, but I suspect it has something to do with the program guide update, especially after noting a few similar bugs while reading this thread.

Also, the problem does NOT occur if I create a manual timer that covers the course of a marathon. All episodes do get recorded properly under one recording. So it's almost as if an edit to a timer simply does not "stick".

Note that this problem never exhibited itself with my older 510 DVR.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

The fiber coming in to the house looks like 300 ohm old TV wire I think that is the weak point.

Charter lost 77,000 TV subscribers, the bigger news, it lost 233,000 broadband subscribers.

You would believe both companies would of learned from what happened with their TV services, which was ignore that cord cutting was a thing, allowed competition ( streaming) to get a foothold in the industry.

Now, in today's world, there are more households in the United States without a paid live TV than those with.

Both companies charge too much, delayed upgrades, all because they believed no one would leave them, only game in town, competition started with the 5G services, than Fiber, enough said, Cord Cutting 2.0 is here.

Bruce
and this from AI, for some reason, not on Echostar's investor page-

In the third quarter of 2026, parent company EchoStar (owner of Dish Network and Sling TV) reported a net loss of 43,000 pay-TV subscribers, compared to a drop of 64,000 in the same period last year. [1]
  • Traditional Dish Satellite TV: Experienced a net decline of approximately 188,000 subscribers, ending September 2026 with 5.89 million satellite customers. [1]
    • Sling TV (Streaming): Added roughly 145,000 net subscribers during the quarter, partially offsetting the satellite losses. [1]
    • Total Pay-TV Base: Ended the third quarter with 8.03 million total pay-TV subscribers (down from 8.07 million at the end of the second quarter)

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.
M
Is Dish like Iran in one way...they both will totally collapse by end of week :)
Foxbat
Other than the price, my experience with Boost is not that different than what I experienced with my years with Cricket. I will be curious to see what happens if SpaceX takes the reins.

Hate to say this no one is ordering Satellite TV. Both DISH and Direct no new customers.
After 25 years with centurylink DSL 80 speed i changed to Xfinity 300 speed for $50 wow lightning fast for streaming. Still have DISH 27 years with them. Americas 250 package for $103. What you think of superbox or vseebox for streaming is it legal?
Still dish is easy to operate and change channels. What will Charlie Ergen do with new super satellites with loosing customers with satellites and boost?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Rodney Dangerfield is great. One of his best one liners - "My wife likes to talk to me during sex, last night she called me from Florida!"

Jackie Gleason is another one of the greats.
