My First HD TV, SD Looks Lousy

Just got it yesterday. I get a few HD channels on my poor peoples cable line up and they look great. But everything else I have is SD. Cable, FTA satellite, DVD, 5 TiVo's. These look much better on the old tube tv. Can I get a better picture without throwing everything away.

Is your DVD player Progressive scan, Or Upconvert?
If so try hooking it up either Component or HDMI , that should improve a little as far as the PQ goes on your DVD player.

This is worth a try. I have component outputs on the dvd and one of the TiVos. Just never messed with component video before.

My suggestion is to upgrade the fuel source for your high performance tv. If your staying with cable upgrade to a HD tuner, I imagine your DVD player is not progressive scan- has no component outputs. Upgrade to a blu ray player.

Now for all those Tivo's I have no suggestion other than they are likely old and they are what they are. Lots of newer technology out there.

You should also upgrade your FTA tuner to an HD one also

There are many of us that have upgraded over the years and have piles of outdated equipment stashed away in a closet.

They will tell you at the auto dealer NOT to put regular gas in such a vehicle. But when buying electronics the only thing they want to talk about is the extended warranty maintenance agreement and the in store credit card. They didn't all your recordings and cable service will look lousy on this tv.
I think the tv mfg. should put SD enhancing circuitry in and use it as a selling point.

Yep, Try and use the best possible connections at all times.

I do the same, I have 4 HDMI, 2 Component, connections on my 52 inch sony.

Start small add an HD cable Box with DVR, Look for used equipment. Lots of people shelved component only HD equipment when they upgraded for HDMI. Most cheap Blu ray players up-convert Sd discs pretty well.

You could look for a decent AV receiver and run everything through it. Some do a decent job of up converting SD

Some HDTVs do better SD than others. To a great extent, you get what you pay for.

With many cable systems that are trying to transition to digital, their SD offerings are poor at best. A really good HDTV may be able to smooth it out. Better HDTVs make a better effort a cleaning up the artifacts of SD programming.

The SD TiVos are going to look worse unless you turn up the quality but they'll obviously never be any better than the source signal. The RF modulators aren't helping either.

You could look for a decent AV receiver and run everything through it. Some do a decent job of up converting SD

Sounds interesting, completely new to me. Can you tell more, make, model, what it does.

I recently upgraded to the LG 37LE5300, which is similar to yours with LED back lighting. SD looks much better on this set compared to the Olevia that it replaced. When I got the Olevia several years ago, after my CRT died I thought the exact same thing about SD. There is a gradual adjustment. (Watch it for a bit and it will appear more acceptable.)

Many SD programs over cable display a lot of heavy compression artifacts, especially older 60-70's programming that no one would buy on DVD anyway.

I have a Mac Mini connected to the LG and I was really surprised how much better Hulu and other internet content looks. It is a much cleaner and smoother looking than the Olevia. I have slow DSL and can only use "medium quality" and the PQ is somewhat between cable SD and HD

If your LG has the "truMotion" feature, play with this. I generally keep it turned off.

Another thing I noticed: I have a very low end DvD Recorder connected to the D* H20 via composite cables and the recordings are excellent compared to what I got when connected to standard cable.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
