I installed a three room DTV system a few weeks ago and the customer is having some weird signal loss issues. The system consists of a SWM 5 slimline dish, HR24, H24, and a D12 (of which was not hooked up till yesterday due to it being a Christmas present). The customer contacted me about 3 or 4 days after her install to say that her H24 did not have programming and was telling her to contact DTV to purchase channels. I had her check the signal and when she went back to the channel she was on the programming came back up. Then a few more days go by and she's having the same problem. At first she says it's sfss and then it goes to channel not purchased. Because of scheduling issues with the holidays we set a service appt for Dec 27. I spoke with her again on the 26th and she said that now the HR24 is having the same problems at the same time and occasionally the receivers will pixilate as well. I went back out on the 27th and of course nothing was screwing up while I was there. I figured since the problem started with one rec and then eventually went to both ( that were hooked up at the time) it was probably a splitter. Just to be safe I went ahead and changed out the splitter, 21v pwr supply and the lnb. Today she called me back again with the same problem again just on the H24. Could this be a bad piece of cable between the splitter and lnb or a bad ground block? I did use an existing line from the ground block to the splitter. Anyone seen this type of issue before with a swm or mrv system? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am going back out tomorrow afternoon to try to resolve this issue. The power supply is on the H24 and the lines split from that room to the other two rooms (if it helps). And also the splitter is a 4way swm with one port left empty.

No unseen splitters. The cable run from swm splitter is exterior so I've gone through that scenario already. I guess when I go out today I'm going to replace everything between the splitter and lnb (cable, connectors, and ground block)
jcrandall
Terminator cap on the unused port of the splitter? Also try replacing that last line you mentioned and perhaps the ground block too. How long is the total cable run, dish to each receiver, you want to try and stay under 100'.

A fellow tech had a similar situation a while back. Several return trips replacing parts looking for the weak link. Was advised by an old timer to disconnect from house ground- he had seen a case where some kind of bleed was entering system from house common. When my bud disconnected from house ground (I know)the problem stopped. Pretty much can't afford to change just one thing per trip which would show the weak link...makes for too many trips and an unhappy customer. When you change several parts at a time you don't have the advantage of knowing which caused problem. One failing receiver can cause probs with others. Cable route from dish too close to house power, a bad ballast in a flourescent light fixture..weird things can cause interference...I had a bad length of coax out of the box running from dish to switch drive me crazy on a 4 room SWM install- receivers A & B would work/C and D would not...then that would reverse. I'm not going to confess how long it took me to figure that one out. Need to get lucky and be there when system failing so you could elimate one link at a time. Bypass gr. blk with a barrel-disconnect ground-remove from system receiver that 1st failed-move P. Ins to another room and rewire SWM splitter. If house is prewired with RG-59 it may not handle that 21 volt push from P.I. Use circuit tester to check outlets that receivers are plugged into. Electricians make mistakes. An outlet with polarity reversed can cause major probs. I learned early not to say "It can't be that" -because it can!! Good luck...been there.

Unfortunately, it could be any number of things since SWM and especially MRV is so fickle.
You have replaced the LNB, splitter, power supply, so we know it is not that.
If there is a ground block between the splitter and LNB, remove that and ground directly to the splitter as the current ones are approved for grounding.

Is it possible for the ground to cause this problem? Absolutely.
However, as far as clipping the ground completely, I would do that only as a last resort.
Personally, I feel grounding is a hoax and some markets no longer do it and rumor is others will follow.
Dunno if it is true, but we can only hope it is (some will disagree, I am sure) Until then however, you are required to do it and if you don't you can be held liable for loss of equipment due to surges. Grounding to code is the only way to protect yourself.

Had a service call with similiar prob that turned out to be the inserter was hooked up to the none power pass port. Even though I corrected the problem the receiver that was inline with the inserter was toast.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That's not really unusual. Cable companies like to the provide the box too. The phone company provided the phones in until the government forced them to allow third-party phones.

LOL. It depends if the person saw it during the years when they were actually still available which is 1968 to 1983 meaning the person could be 43-58 years old or they can even be a few years old if they learned to read and write at a young age and actually saw a telephone with that label somewhere recently just like even here in San Francisco, payphone still exist physically in public places but whether they can be used or not is a different issue. It still looks like this even today:

I opened my Radio Shack in Sept 1984 and right about that time they did the whole deregulation thing with the phone companies. I bought TONS of those phones that had been refurbished with a new outer shell. You could throw one of those out of a 3 story high window and it would still work.
That was an interesting time in history. I would have older customers come in and ask about phones.....they were terrified that they were going to get into trouble hooking up a second phone without the phone company knowing about it. One of the funniest episodes of WKRP was the one where Johnny thought the cops were showing up because they had an unregistered phone. I guess younger folks can't conceive of a time when you were limited to the number of phones you could have in your house....and limited to the length of the cord 🤣

That's one of those songs that hits a little too close to home for me. I like the song but just can't listen to it. It's kinda like that song "Daddy never was the Cadillac kind".....reminds me too much of my Grandfather who died Feb 18, 1995.

My OTA is not working anymore. This started after the latest update. I have the OTA dongle with a OTA antenna that I've been using for years. My hopper does not recognize the dongle anymore and when I go to the OTA setting, it has a screen that says to plug a dongle into the USB. I tried unplugging and plugging back, in the same usb port and other ports. The Hopper does not recognize it. Anyone have same issue?

Did you people having this issue contact Brittany yet? Shes trying to keep track of things and it would be good for you to contact her as maybe she can get this somewhere and get fixed.

Now while unofficial, I am hearing this issue wasn't caused by DISH's software team, but was caused by a chipset driver update that seemes to have hosed some older USB devices. If this is indeed the case I can see why DISH didn't know and why they are slow in fixing it as they need the chipset company to fix its drivers and release them to DISH so they can be pushed out to all.

DISH does not hate you guys nor do they want you to buy new USB dongles. I am rather sure they didn't even know this was an issue until they saw it posted.

Again contact Brittany if you are having this issue, so she has your info and hopefully she can do something for you to keep you happy. :)

Thanks, but until they do, can't Dish just revert to the old driver that worked? Then test the new driver when delivered,d before pushing it again.

But then what does an old CIO know! I've only reamed quite a few buttholes from my people that didn't do that! ;)

They can absolutely put the old driver back if they wanted. This is an embedded software environment in which they have total control. All they have to do if build a new version of firmware with the old OTA driver and test it of course. They just don't want to spend the resources doing so. If they are not going to continue supporting the single tuner adapter, then they have to say so.

Unless of course they didn't keep a copy of the old drivers and can no longer get it. Then there is always the their support for the product is EOL after a x amount of time so it will make the consumer have to buy the current product offering.

No updates but if you can get DISH Technical Operations to roll you back to H710 or earlier even though H708 would be best because it also eliminates another problem like in this comment, you will also no longer have the problem as long as you don't update manually or forced to any new version until the problem is fixed as the problem started in H711 and still exist in H712 and H713.

Installed an off-air antenna a couple days ago for a customer who had just cancelled his Dish service. He had a dual off-air adapter and gave it to me. Cool. I'll keep it on the truck....might come in handy. Got to admit I don't watch anything as far as live tv goes anymore. Even if we have severe weather, our local channels will have a live feed on Youtube.

In other news, it was announced that the software fix for the two tin cans and a string will not be forthcoming. A hardware fix is required. However, that fix will let you receive stations from a gazillion miles away.

Truck roll charges may apply. Two year commitment required.

DEATH TO NEXGEN!

17 years ago the US turned off analog OTA signals in favor of digital broadcasting. Now the push is ATSC 3 "Nextgen TV". But nobody seems to be able to agree on DRM implementation protocols. People don't want to hook their TV up to the internet in order to watch over the air TV. At least I don't. With all the data they collect about your viewing habits the box should be given away at no cost.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
