Mr. Charles F. Dolan
Cablevision Systems Corporation
1111 Stewart Avenue
Bethpage, New York 11748-3581

Dear Chuck:

As you know, on February 28th, after failing to reach an agreement with VOOM HD, LLC concerning an acquisition of the VOOM assets that are not under contract to be sold to EchoStar Satellite L.L.C., the Special Committee and the Board determined that negotiations should cease and that the VOOM business should be shut down.

In a call with you yesterday morning, you told us that you intend to approach EchoStar to negotiate an arrangement whereby, with EchoStar's agreement, Rainbow-1 could be brought together with the VOOM business outside of Cablevision. You agreed that whether you were able to succeed in that effort or not, Cablevision would get out of the satellite business, and you told us explicitly that you would not take any action to override any decision that the Board took on or before February 28th. For our part, we agreed to support a delay in the shutdown of VOOM for a short period while you engage in those discussions and that if you are able to negotiate such an arrangement with EchoStar on terms satisfactory to us, we would be prepared to renew discussions with you for a sale of the VOOM business, so long as the totality of such arrangements puts Cablevision in a significantly better position than it would be in were it to close the pending transaction with EchoStar and engage in a shutdown of the VOOM business.

We now understand that the VOOM business continues to take on subscribers and that this is being done, at least in part, through a newly-created web site (voomllc.com) remarkably similar to VOOM's existing web site (voom.com). These efforts -- likely to deceive new subscribers and the public into believing that VOOM is still an authorized going business of Cablevision -- are in direct contradiction to the action taken by the Board on February 28th because they are an expansion rather than a shutdown of the business, and they are being done with funds that have not been authorized by the Board. To be clear, Cablevision had authorized funding for VOOM through February 28th, and the Board did not extend that funding beyond that date. It is imperative that this expansion of the business stop immediately and that actions taken by the Board be respected and carried out by the company's officers.

We are very concerned that the VOOM situation resolve itself promptly. In all events, you must ensure that your actions do not jeopardize our obligations to EchoStar or delay the company's exit from the VOOM business. If you are unable to come to terms with EchoStar in the very near future, we expect that you will honor your commitment to us to do nothing to impede a

shutdown of the VOOM business. We look forward to a report from you by our March 7th Board Meeting.

Sincerely,

/s/ Victor Oristano

We obviously disagree on what a transitionary period is. Let's see if the SEC and FCC do, since those are the opinions that count. I say it looks bad if you show up to approve the deal which contains that language and you've already abandoned your customers(via the shutdown of Voom) when there was an alternative put on the table(Dolan Sr. offer).
The deal didn't promise Voom customers what would be transitioned to or when. Cablevision's announcement of the deal said there would be a transition, but did not say what the transition to would be or when. Turning off the service is an event that Voom can transition to.

It bears repeating that I hope that "down" isn't the final transition target, but the Feb 28th announced shutdown began a 30 plus day transition to no service from Voom. Time to give customers a chance to find and install another option. Time to give employees to find another job within Cablevision or elsewhere. Not the desired transition by a long shot, but it is a transition.

Here is E*'s application for Rainbow1 - You can download it from the FCC in four parts: 1 2 3 4
It contains redacted text of the deal signed with Echostar for your reading pleasure.

As far as the board letter we've been reading, that apparently is a completely new deal that Charles Dolan told the board he was going to pursue last Tuesday - beyond the Rainbow1 transfer.

I don't think a man like Chuck Dolan would do anything without a bevy of lawyers following close behind to make sure he is doing it by the book. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

I have been a lurker on this board for some time and decided that I should let all of you know how much I have enjoyed the info and banter going on for the last few months - great source of VOOM info....

I am a charter member of VOOM (ordered Dec. 2003) and have enjoyed over a year of the best HD money can buy. I still own all of my equipment and, if the worst happens and VOOM closes down, am ready to write off the expense to the great experience. Come on - most all of us on this board are technical junkies and have experienced the thrill of "being first" and sometimes the disappointments of watching the cost of technology that we embraced and piloted drop like a rock - or worse - disappear due to the lack of broad appeal. I lost a lot more money on my 50" plasma from buying it two years ago than I will ever lose to being one of first to jump onto the VOOM bandwagon. Such is the addiction / thrill of being a "first adapter".

That being said - I really hope that Charles can pull this off. I just grabbed this article off the web - haven't seen it posted yet. Seems to verify some of the speculation that has been voiced on this board.

__________________________________________________ ___________

Cablevision Chairman Charles Dolan is seeking to save its struggling satellite TV service VOOM by a co-operative deal with EchoStar, which is set to take over the Rainbow 1 satellite in a $200m deal.

Dolan planned to approach EchoStar to negotiate an arrangement in which the Rainbow-1 satellite supporting VOOM's service could be "brought" together with the VOOM business outside of Cablevision. The other directors of Cablevision said: "For our part, we agreed to support a delay in the shutdown of VOOM for a short period while you engage in those discussions and that if you are able to negotiate such an arrangement with EchoStar on terms satisfactory to us, we would be prepared to renew discussions with you for a sale of the VOOM business".

It's unclear how Dolan would gain use of the Rainbow 1 satellite, if he could get access to the satellite at all, or even if a deal was actually discussed between the Cablevision chairman and EchoStar. Cablevision released the records of discussions through a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Cablevision has also revealed that the Securities and Exchange Commission is conducting an informal inquiry into the trading of its securities and has requested information concerning the suspension of its Rainbow Media service.

Oh, THERE you are...A voice of reason...

...What the heck are you doing here, fella (or gal!)? :) :D (I tried to post this to you minutes after you posted, but through operator error or computer malfunction (I'd prefer the latter excuse, please) nearly posted it in another thread. Glad I found your again! :)

I'm in 100% agreement with you. I'm not one of the "tech junkies" but I must admit I have felt a certain thrill of having been on the fringes of this revolution. I subscribed (no equipment purchase)...I quit...I'm in process of being re-subscribed.

It was then, and IS now ,within my limited experience (only Cable HD...a totally miserable offering my area), the best there is.

Whatever happens tomorrow, I'm glad I got to see it once, and hope I get to see it for a long time in the future, most preferably through VoOm! :D

I had not seen what you posted, but a reference link to the source would be very helpful to newbies and skeptics (...and I fall into both categories). There are lots of new posters here who are trying to figure things out. I think personally, that I've seen enough references to form a reasonably informed opinion, but I'd like to suggest, to one and all, that links to info you discuss are extremely helpful to newbies as well as skeptics.

As most everybody knows at this point, there's nothing to do but wait for the smoke to clear, because it won't be decided by any of us, but a link would make it a little easier to help evaluate the circumstances for some who have not been following things for as long as many who post frequently. Thanks for your, in my opinion, "reasoned" input. :) Vicki

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.
EarDemon
I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.
