HEADLINE: Clayton Gets Hopping With Dish Campaigns

The new multi?room home?networking tools are central to the subscriber?challenged satellite TV service's

new marketing push and promise to, among other things, allow subscribers to record and cache all of the

prime time programs from local CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX affiliates each night between 8 and 11 p.m. and

hold them for up to eight days. That way, viewers will rarely miss a favorite major network program again,

Clayton said.

Dish CEO Joe Clayton presents the Hopper and the Joey (in his hands), key components in a new multi?room

DVR networking system.

Dish has named the automatic network recording capability Primetime Anytime, and will use it as part of a

massive advertising campaign Clayton has planned to grab eyeballs away from DirecTV, cable and telco TV

competitors.

The Hopper, which uses a kangaroo as its trademark, is a DVR and household server on steroids. It contains

2TB of internal storage capacity, three tuners, the ability to record up to six programs at a time, and can relay

programs from the Hopper's hard drive and tuners to up to three remote rooms in the house.

Viewers, in effect, gain the ability to "hop from room to room" viewing the same program on different TVs.

"We want people demanding a Hopper," Clayton said. "It's fun, it's entertainment, it's emotional and it's

different from what everybody else has."

It's smaller partner, the Joey (as in a baby kangaroo), is actually a thin?client box that is tethered via a MoCA

coaxial cable system to the Hopper to share live and recorded TV programs in up to three additional rooms.

The system will incorporate a new interactive program guide that features a more ergonomic look and feel,

and provides access to programs recorded on the Primetime Anytime service.

In addition to launching the Hopper here, Clayton is also polishing up the Dish facade by dropping "Network"

from the brand name ? it's just Dish now on the marketing side ? introducing a new logo and amping up a

commercial advertising blitz to appeal to families.

"The new Dish is about fun and family entertainment," Clayton said. "It's not about model numbers or set?top

boxes. Each member of the family can be entertained together or with different programming playing at the

same time."

Clayton will be appealing to potential subscribers with the pitch: "more music, more magic, more memory,

more movies."

On the music end, Clayton is leveraging his past role as CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio to enhance and expand

SiriusXM music channels available on the Dish TV platform.

"We believe music is under served by cable TV and DirecTV," Clayton contended. "Today, we offer in our

higher?end packages up to 65 channels of SiriusXM commercial?free music. We are going to expand that

virtually across our entire platform and move it from channel 6000, where it is hidden, down to channel 99,

and when you hit 99 and then hit 61, you'll see SiriusXM Blue Grass come up and play, along with a picture

of the cover of the album the song comes from."

Clayton said in addition to existing SiriusXM channels, Dish plans to add a couple of additional music

services, hinting that "the Latino market is a growth market in an otherwise saturated pay?TV field, so we

will be adding 15 channels to appeal to that audience."

Dish will launch the Hopper and Joey with a promotional campaign, starting with Blockbuster At Home. The

new effort will play off of the previous Blockbuser Movie Pass campaign offering additional family and

children's programming in the package.

Subscribers who sign up will receive three months of free DVD rentals by mail, more than 40 channels of HD

programming, and more than 3,000 children's and family titles added to the existing library of streaming

Blockbuster on Demand movies, for a total of more than 8,000 movies and television programs.

For those without broadband service, Dish will offer a program called Blockbuster Unplugged, which will

download via satellite more than 500 movies at a rate of 10 a day.

Dish will also offer a program this spring for existing Dish subscribers who do not have a DVR?equipped

tuner decoder. This will provide an external hard drive that will plug into legacy equipment to deliver DVR

functionality to a standalone tuner box.

To engage consumers curious about Dish service, Clayton's team has developed a 72?hour sampling service

of the most popular movies and TV shows, called Dish Test Drive. This will use a downloaded app and cloud

service to provide live broadcast TV channels.

"You sign up online and we will provide Dish service to your phone, tablet or portable PC to try out," Clayton

said. "We believe people will get hooked on the service, plus it is a lead generator for us."

Dish will play up the various promotions with a new advertising campaign leveraging national TV spots to

talk about new products and features. The ads will center on Dish delivering more variety, more innovation

and more value.

Dish plans to tie the spots into its online efforts by launching a redesigned website, Clayton said.

How about a combined functionality question...

Say I use two Hoppers to get the number of tuners required in my application; does the second Hopper use the now redundant hard drive space to duplicate the Prime Time Anytime programming? It seems the intelligent way to manage this situation would be to defeat the PTA drive space allocation on the second Hopper, thereby giving the combined system 3TB or recording space for all other tuners.

You could disable PTA on the second device.
gpflepsen
You could disable PTA on the second device.

I hope this is the case, but I haven't seen this directly addressed, that the second Hopper could be set to free the majority of the drive space for general use.

If someone gets a second Hopper then Dish should not need all that hard drive space that they dedicated for themselves since that is already on the first Hopper. They should give the user that additional space since their dedicated partition on the first Hopper can be shared throughout the whole house.

I wonder if there will be a requirement to have a separate "tailgater" account from your regular home account. Might be the simplest fix if indeed they have a billing software problem. But the amount they'd charge could be a problem.

I can see one day a DVR-less Hopper. Then when someone wanted to upgrade to DVR they could pay a fee and plug in an EHD.

I've heard of people with DVRs that never use any DVR features. They'd have to learn something new.
dwarren2
In a 2 Hopper set up, are the 2 Hoppers required to be at the same location or can they be in separate rooms? Would make a difference whether I would need 2 or 3 Joeys.

It's so funny that you brought up this point, I have a dear friend of mine she is 75 the cable company brought her out a brand new DVR like 2 years ago she has no idea how to use it to this day never recorded one thing ever.

Then my aunt who is also like 65 keeps deleting everything after she has watched it because she is afraid she is going to run out of "tape" I keep going Aunt Jo there is NO tape in there it will delete itself but she is so sure that its going to "tape" over something LOL. She actually bothered to figure out how to use the thing completely but doesn't understand how it works inside at all. and the bad thing about it is she has a 922 LOL

I would bet for full price of the Hopper, it will never happen.
In a world of those coders, only dedicated fixed size partitions exist.
Try to resize these for any existing DVR include the base of Hopper's SW - 922. All partitions will be DELETED next reboot and you'll lost everything.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That said, since '08 I have had Sat radio available to me ... I think I have turned on AM 3 or 4 times, just to see if its still there.

Fwiw, if theres a Major disaster or bad weather or whatever, the chances of me finding out about it by going to the AM side of the radio is SLIM and None.
Even FM, I haven't really had on since '13ish, I may turn it on from time to time, just to see if its still there.

Automation has seen to that. You can't get evening drive traffic reports where I live, much less disaster reports.

That goes for a lot of people. I've been advertising on radio for more than a decade now and am very familiar with this subject. While it is still a valuable tool, it has far less impact than it did just a few years ago. The best reaction I get is from a local Country music station....they play a mix of older and newer music and have a very big footprint.

Do you do any Ad's on Satellite ?

If Not, why not, because it's not Local ?

No, just regular FM stations. One is the country station I mentioned and the other is a Talk Radio station which used to get fantastic results but honestly, since the death of Rush Limbaugh, talk radio just doesn't do as well. There were two guys who had an early morning show which was hugely popular here in the southeast but one of them retired a couple years ago and the show just doesn't garner the same numbers as it used to.

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Seems like I remember that now, with my V9 I manually entered anyway on 105, easier for me to pick the channel later :)

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

Right now on C band getting 105w, a Mexican channel with 95% quality and I am near Detroit! I'm recording a TECHNO MUSIC FESTIVAL today from Mexico ..if you can believe it.....and yes that SHED is partly in the path so I'm puzzled. There are also christian channels on 105w.

105W has some very strong transponders. I received more than four transponders using a 41-inch dish recently. See here.

The Westwood One Mux on 105W would likely be receivable, has some good music channels on there. It does scan in, but it's more convenient to manually enter the PIDs, check out Lyngsat for the channels: EchoStar 105/SES 11 at 105.0°W - LyngSat

I use a 10 footer (only C-band dish I have), but it's very strong.

No, I was actually referring to outside of the Top 8, but should have been Top 12 ...

I guess I should have looked at the bracket from last year first ...

I'm more thinking about them trying to expect a 15 to beat a 5 seed or there abouts .

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.

I mean you get upsets all the time.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Yep, wonder why we rank the top 25 in 2 poles still? Do the ranking change much if they are unranked or have many loses? They sure do, any given day never take your opponent as a cake walk.....

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.

The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.
