From Wall Street Journal:

A federal judge in New York ruled that TV broadcasters' lawsuits against Dish Network Corp.over its new ad-skipping feature can proceed in California, while letting some of Dish's claims in a related case proceed in New York.

The split ruling was good news for the broadcasters, which want their case against Dish to be heard in California.
The broadcasters sued Dish over an ad-skipping feature called "Auto Hop" the satellite TV firm released on a new digital video recorder this spring.
Dish had separately sued in New York, seeking a declaratory judgment affirming the legality of the technology.

An editorial rant from a retired TV producer--

While none of us from a viewer perspective love the 30 second commercial interruption to our programming we should recognize that it is part of the "free" TV package, or that it augments the high cost of TV production. The Auto Hop enhancement to the 30 second skip is indeed a way to totally ignore all the commercials which executes direct harm to the financing of these programs. At least the 30 second skip, when used, it briefly exposes viewers to the commercial and if not engaging, we skip through it. This at least forces us to be exposed and forces the ad producer to be more creative in making the spot hold your attention. With Auto Hop, Dish has used technology to sabotage the entire business model of the very industry they get revenue from. In my opinion, as a veteran of TV advertising, Dish Network has made about the most stupid mistake I have ever seen by any business in my entire career. That is no exaggeration. It's about like if you went to work and devised a way to prevent your employer from selling his product preventing him from being able to pay you your salary. When I first heard of the Auto Hop I was dumbfounded. I could not decide if Dish Network was just run by a new breed of morons or they had gone suicidal.
I can see a 3rd party company making such a device. A company that has no dependency on ad revenue either directly or indirectly, but not Dish Network. This invention is really stupid of them to deliver to their customers and short sighted for customers to embrace. I'm still flabbergasted they would deliver such a function. And now, pay to defend it in court.

My suggestion- drop the defense. disable Auto Hop and hope and pray the Networks will continue to look the other way for the 30 second skip feature.

And this is just a ridiculous defense in the current day. They can't call it "free" tv if they turn around and charge Dish and other service providers to re-transmit their shows. They are double-dipping and then have the gall to try and cry foul. That is just lunacy.

I, for one, have absolutely no problem with commercials...just as long as the programmers are not also charging subscribers. TNT, USA, ESPN, FX (and anyone else who accepts ad dollars) should be 100% free of charge. Otherwise, charge your customers accordingly and knock off the endless hours of commercials and infomercials each day. Television stations should be required to declare whether they are Advertiser Sponsored, and provided free-of-charge to customers/MVPDs, or subscription-based in which they are free to charge fair market price for their commercial-free programming.

Just my two cents.

Try it your way and sabotage the revenue stream for Broadcast TV and see where that lands you? Fool!

Hey! I've been saying the 30 second spot is obsolete for 20 years but the industry refuses to embrace the many new ways we developed in the TV-Shopper show I co produced over 15 years running. We reduced the 30 second spot to that of the program genre only, one per break, integrated the spot with the show content, and sold ad revenue real estate area of the screen as a lower third running throughout the program. None of our methods could be deleted with AutoHop or 30 second skip. When TIVO first hit we created these methods and sold the ads based on this fact it was immune to the skip. But the "Free" TV broadcast model never embraced it because it was too radical a change. I feel if AutoHop wins the case and the TV Broadcasters see their revenue hit, then you will get these new forms of advertising that you will have no control over. Either that or the "Free" TV as you know it will be a thing of the past. History, like NTSC TV. Every channel, will have an access fee, every program will be like itunes and you will pay for each. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

My own worry is that this suit will bring 30 second skip into the limelight and ruin a good thing for us viewers. I know that viewer discretion to skip was found to be legal, legality is not the only way we can lose the war on viewer freedom. This may force the hand of the broadcaster to use other ways to force viewers to see ads if they wish to view the programming.

But this is not real world logic. Media has had its entire history of being paid for by multiple revenue streams. Name me anything in media that you see that has only one revenue stream. You may not be aware of all the revenue streams. Can you imagine what you'd pay for your newspaper if they did not sell advertising? CNN? HBO? Magazines?

I've been using the word "FREE" when describing "Free" TV in quotes because nothing is really free. "FREE" Tv is really paid for by a number of revenue streams, not just by one resource. It's a way of keeping the cost to a viewer down and spreading it out so your out of pocket is much lower per program.

I get the tv industry point of view. I wouldn't mind if commercials were somehow integrated into programs. At least then it wouldn't be a waste of time. But they already do that with product placement.

This is just like many other things in the world. If they can't afford to produce programs then they become obsolete. You adapt or die. If you can't pay the salaries of the over-paid stars then maybe salaries get realistic and more in line with the rest of the world. Just like if people don't go see the latest crap Adam Sandler movie maybe a studio doesn't pick up his high price tag in the future. This is a way to voice our displeasure with the old ways of doing things.

My feel on commercials. I never really minded them when you had a few at the top of the hour, a few at the bottom of the hour, and maybe a couple at the 1/4 hours. It seemed about perfect in the streets of San Francisco time period. I personally blame the increase in commercials on the boom in big payments to sports organizations for the rights to rebroadcast their events. The networks paying those big dollars meant coming up with more cash, and to drive more cash they started pulling in more advertisers. Broadcasters got greedy and cable channels like HGTV or MTV inundate the consumer with commercials. They're inability to control themselves caused the market to create a new tool, a tool that they really don't like the idea of. If they simply would have been more reasonable in their quantity and quality of commercials, there would have never been a reason to invent the AutoHop.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Finished season 3 last night. Still one of my favorite shows.

Anyone else wonder if there might be something else going on with Callum? Seems to me he has too much access to Russian intelligence.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Might be worth just to ditch the hopper plus. No issues here on h713

Buy a roku and dump the hopper plus you'll be better off. If you have a smart tv you don't need either one. No hopper plus here and no issues!!!
