I started a separate thread to continue on with a tangential discussion in another thread, http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/297239-Hopper-S229-S230-Feedback!/page76

No I do not.

I understand what you are saying about hue, but compression issues (especially ones that show in large areas of the same color like walls; simulate crawling areas) are easy to spot. My plasma does not do well with a compressed signal, and thats where Im telling you Showtime and Fx for example, it's easy for me to say they look better on dish with my gear.

A lot of this "I dont see it" also comes into play with view distance and screen size. Im about 11 feet from the 65" and get to see all the bad side of compression. Dish offers a cleaner image on some of the channels I regularly watch, which is actually a surprise to me with past history.

In regard to compression issue I would say it really depends on how big the difference is. And you and I may see more than most people care to. :-) I sit 10-11ft from 60" so we are in the same ballpark.

Funny you mention FX as I watch It's Always Sunny and The League. When the new seasons started this fall I thought the PQ as atrocious. almost like YouTube with terrible compression artifacts. But starting about 2-3 weeks ago it is much better. So again, did I really notice a change, was there really a change? I don't have any reference to go back to. How long have you had Dish as I'm curious when you first watched FX to see if it jives what I think I have seen.

I just came back to Dish and I can say that with the Hopper, Dish looks better than it used to look when I had a 722k a few years ago. I'm not sure if it is the receiver or they use newer encoders, but I used to be very unhappy with the quality of Dish. There are a few channels that just don't look very good, like Comedy Central or the occasional alternate sports feed, but there are channels that look excellent too. Overall, I think DirecTV was better on image clarity, but more compression artifacts were creeping up on their signals recently too. FX, on DirecTV in particular, has poorly compressed grain from hell. Dish seems to soften the image and remove some of the grain using filters. NFL Network, during games, is pretty terrible on both providers. DirecTV is ahead in quality, but there are channels where I couldn't tell them apart from Dish to save my life. You also have your channels where one provider has it in HD and the other doesn't. It is what it is.

And I on the other hand think it doesn't look so hot. Typical bitstarved MPEG4 where all fine detail is totally gone. Just look at the field, it looks like a large green blob, no resemblance to grass what so ever. Look at people's faces on close-ups, no detail at all. The H from HD is gone.

Boy E* is stuffing too many channels per transponders. When I compare OTA locals is like night and day. You have to to have vision problems not to notice. I recorded a 3 hour x-mas concert and it took 17.3 GB on my hard drive and the same program through E* it was like 5 GB. The sound through OTA was full and very clear and E* was sort of flat, both on 5.1 DD.

You are comparing apples and oranges. OTA is MPEG 2 and E* is MPEG 4. So the size is never going to be the same. So saying that it is stuffing to many channels per transponders us a not a correct statement. You can get comparable stats only when you use 2 of the same thing. In MPEG 4 the size would be close to what you have quoted for OTA.
GaryPen
SD locals have historically looked worse on Dish than SD "cable" channels. So, it seems only natural that it would end up the same for HD.

To say that E* puts too many channels per TP is a fact. I understand OTA is MPEG 2 but I tell you, especially Univision looks as good as a Blu Ray disk. I only record OTA for special events on this channel due to the size it takes, but transfer it to the EHD which has 1 TB right away.

Transmitter is 6 miles and signal is 98-100. Other channels don't look as good. :popcorn

1st of all it impossible for any broadcast to look as good as a Blu Ray Disk. It just doesn't have the bandwidth a BR disc does. There are also several other things that can factor into PQ as well. How it the signal delivered to E* is one of those. If they are getting a fiber signal then it will be cleaner than if they are picking it up OTA demoding it and then sending it to E. How many subchannels on the signal can cut back on PQ as well. Then the last possible is how many are on your tp coming to you. So areas have 5 HD's on their tp some have up to 8. I would think that those that have 8 is really pushing it past the limit of a good hi quality picture.

Where I live, some of the HD locals still look better ota than the "cable" channels do on Dish. For example, our CBS station is an O&O station that is broadcast in 1080i with no sub-channels. IMO, nothing on Dish looks as good. Although some of the on demand stuff, after being fully downloaded, looks really nice.

It's just that the 11-1 Univision is an Empire in spanish speaking locations in the U.S & beyond. I guess they must have the latest in equipment. Other HD locals are
ok I guess.

No sub channels in Univision.

You are correct that 8 HD's in one TP is really pushing it.:)
3HaloODST
Ideally it should be 6 HD channels per TP IMO. It's just how it goes. Whether it's OTA, Satellite, Internet, Cable, there just doesn't appear to be enough bandwidth to produce Blu-Ray-quality or anything near it for that matter.

Depends on the location. I have worked for 2 stations that had Univision as subchannels. One put out a really good picture and one put out a mediocre picture. It was due to the equipment that the 2 different locations had to output the OTA signal.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Which one has O'Neil being Ancients? I am at the end of Season 8 now.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
