My 922, with which I have had very little to complain about in the years I've had it, has recently been spontaneously rebooting itself at an unusual frequency. It seems to do this most often when I am recording something, especially two things at once. Or it could be that's just when I notice it the most because of the split in overnight recordings when I view them the next day. The only change I've made was to add an additional EHD to the second USB port so I now have two hooked up, whereas I had just one EHD connected before. I am guessing that is not related to the problem but I don't really know.

So does this most likely mean my 922 is on its deathbed and I need to start archiving my recordings to the EHDs fast and furious? Any input is appreciated, but general 922-bashing is probably not necessary -- I've read the feedback already and there are plenty of threads focused on trashing the 922. I just didn't find an answer to this specific question.

Dish receivers in general can be sensitive to voltage. If you have two EHDs, you probably already know this, but they have to have their own power source, or it can cause issues. KAB is right, I suspect the second EHD may be causing the problem. Try without that connected. Also, if you're connected using a surge suppressor or similar, try plugging the receiver directly into a wall outlet to see if that resolves or helps the problem, as that can (rarely) be an issue.

Thanks for the help KAB and SomeDishGuy. I unplugged the EHD from the back and I thought it was behaving better. Last night I noticed another split recording (sign of a mid-recording reboot) which would be the first time it's done it since I unplugged the second EHD, at least that I have been aware of. I am plugged into a fairly advanced batter backup / surge protector (AKA uninterrupted power source [UPS].) Could a UPS potentially cause the same problems that you mentioned might be caused by a surge suppressor? My understanding was that a UPS delivers a cleaner, more consistent current to the machine, better than straight from the wall outlet. But perhaps I have too many things plugged into the UPS now with the addition of an extra EHD. So I will try unplugging the EHD from electrical power as well. I now have a couple other things to try and I am encouraged that there may be a good answer to these anomalies other than "my receiver is dying."
navychop
A UPS DOES NOT "deliver a cleaner, more consistent current to the machine, better than straight from the wall outlet." You're thinking of a Line Conditioner. That i$ a different hor$e altogether.

Most UPS units do nothing until the power dies. Then they rapidly switch to batteries, and deliver a "modified square wave" to your equipment. The more you pay, the closer to a true sine wave they get. And for the REALLY big buck$ you can get units that produce a true sine wave. Some, perhaps most, UPS units will also cut off if the incoming voltage exceeds some set figure.

I doubt that your UPS is causing the problem, but it could be.

Is your ViP922 your only receiver?
psychotrope
I also have a 722 which is having no problems at all that I know of. I tried completely unplugging the additional EHD, even from the wall to make sure it wasn't overloading the capacity or causing any fluctuations. But it's still rebooting in the middle of recordings. It did it at about 10:50 p.m last night affecting two recordings. I don't know if recording something makes it more likely to reboot, or if it's just that that's the only time I notice the rebooting: when I see that a late-night or overnight recording is in two segments with about 18 minutes missing. Could the four-hour inactivity standby setting be causing (as an error, not that it's supposed to be this way) it to reboot as a glitch? That would just about matchup with four hours after I last touched the remote and stopped watching TV, leaving the receiver on. It seems to happen between 10:30 and midnight a lot of nights. My update time is set for 3 a.m. I don't recall it crashing on me while I was watching TV unless I was recording something.
psychotrope
Update: I plugged my 922 directly into the wall (or more directly into the wall) and am no longer running it through my TripLite UPS/Surge Protector. It has now gone two days without randomly re-booting, at least not at a time when I noticed and not during any recordings (no split recordings). It's been a while since it has gone 48 hours without crashing in the middle of a recording. Hopefully this is a good sign that, with all of your help, I have narrowed in on the root of the problem. If this ends up working better long-term, it still won't help me understand why my TripLite would have been causing the problem, but I imagine it has to do with current fluctuations as mentioned by another poster. Thanks for your input.

One further question: Do you know if the sudden development of a problem such as this might be a sign that my UPS/Surge Protector is not functioning properly anymore? It might be worth swapping it out for another one to see if the problem comes back or not. Many of you know a LOT more about these kind of electrical setups than I do, which is why I thought I'd ask.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.
