I live in an RV, move around to different RV parks. A few weeks ago I got a new neighbor. They moved in, set up, and the next day a Dish Network truck shows up and sets up a 1000.2 dish on a flat stand with some concrete blocks holding it down. I've seen this before where the Dish customer pays a monthly service fee and Dish comes to wherever they move to and sets them up with a satellite dish.

Okay, so the new neighbor gets in a dispute with the RV park owner and moves out after a week, leaving the new dish and stand behind. It's been two weeks since neighbor left. Dish and stand still there. Are these abandoned? Should they have taken the equipment with them? What's the deal? RV park owner says he's had to throw them in the dumpster many times after people move out.

We've all seen satellite dishes on vacant houses and assume that the owners just got a new one installed to wherever they moved to. Is that the same case with someone as mobile as in an RV?

Thanks.

Most of the RV dishes I've seen are on tripods. That installer must have quite a load of cinderblocks in his van to do 'em all like that!

Yup. Tripods are not approved mounts for installers. We carry 9 cap blocks for nonpenns and patio mounts. But reload every night back at the shop when using them.

I believe it is CHEAPER not to have to go and unmount and disassemble an old reflector and LNBF, switch, etc., and then go to the new place and reassemble and re-mount. My belief has always been that the reflector is incredibly cheap for Dish. Further, even the relatively expensive for RETAIL LNBF's and switches are also FAR MORE Cheaper for Dish than we might think. In the past, with upgrades, the installer would take the equipment with them in their vans. I asked what they did with them and they said they just threw them out with the trash. They didn't want to leave them as a mess for the customer. I'm talking a complete upgrade of reflector, LNBF's and "expensive" switches. No, they said they do not re-use the switches--that is Dish Corp. installers did not re-use them; independent retailers probably do.

Now, get this: with my last upgrade to Hopper just last November, it was another COMPLETE hardware upgrade with NEW reflector and NEW LNBF's and replacing my TWO DPP44 switches. He took all that equipment and put them in MY garbage bin! I can't remember if he put the reflector, as well, but I have every confidence they never re-use those. So, this last upgrade further confirmed my belief that they just throw them out. However, an independent retailer may re-use some of the switches to save themselves some money.

I believe Dish throws out used reflectors, LNBF's, and switches partly because it is cheap enough for them to do so, certainly avoiding the additional cost of taking down reflectors, etc, and switches for a Dish Mover: cheaper just to install new stuff at the new home.

The other reason is, IMHO, is that Dish doesn't want to gamble with the customer experience: in other words, if Dish were to re-use the old LNBF's, and switches (and I mean if they no longer need that switch for that install such as in my case of replacing and throwing out TWO DPP44's with Hopper Nodes, etc.), that old equipment could malfunction or die a lot sooner than if they just used all NEW equipment for all Dish Movers and installs (again, leaving in place equipment that can still be used, but if they take it out, they do NOT use it again), and this provides for a greater chance of POSITIVE customer experience AND LOWER COST to Dish because they don't have to send a tech out AGAIN, to replace old re-used parts and only get $15 of the cost covered or even the $99 tech visit fee is NOT cover additional labor and new parts cost to replace re-used equipment. Who knows how much longer the re-used equipment will last? After years of being weather-beaten under the sun, etc., they could last years, or months, or days. To a big company like Dish, it is too expensive and too big a risk, so they just replace everything with NEW equipment, if necessary.

Now, the STB is a different matter, and can be re-used to high efficiency, and the STB's are more expensive than the really cheap stuff that make up the rest of the system. Keep in mind, Dish is a really big buyer, so Dish's cost on what are expensive retail items are gonna be so low that it does make economic sense, especially when factoring in the "hidden" costs to re-using all equipment except for the STB's.

BTW, I went back and retrieved both of my DPP44's that the installer threw out into my garbage bin. Everything else was left in the garbage as I did not see any value in them. Although I should have taken the reflector because I've had situations where a few people just needed a reflector (the mount is cheap to buy on Amazon at retail) to get started on Dish without a contract or other high cost (the LNBF's can also be had retail) because it is the reflector and assembly that is truly over priced at retail sites. In fact, it is the retail price of the reflector and assembly that blows out any savings with a DIY for those who do not want to commit to 2 years. Oh, well. Live and learn.

Just my two cents.

The stuff when upgrades that is taken down is supposed to be brought back to the shop, like switches and lnbs to be tested and refurbished and used again if possible, just like recievers.

What I was describing was my experience when it comes to people moving. It is my experience that we do not return to the location someone moves from and uninstall it. Even if the equipment is on a temporary mount. It would be cost prohibitive to set up a deinstall compared to installing new gear off the van.

right. And there is a labor cost to going out and taking down the stuff from a residence. They are paying someone while NOT gaining a customer. If it were that important and really had a cost savings, Dish (Cheap Charlie) would make arrangements to come by before you leave and take this "valuable" equipment back to the shop. I have not seen ANY, in may case, left installed Dish systems activated by new tenants. Further, Dish sometimes requires a customer do send in the LNBF's, so there are a lot of Dish reflectors I've seen with cables CUT at the feed horn. This is most likely to a cancelled account and Dish wants to prevent piracy by requiring the LNBF's to be returned, but still, such a reflector with no LNBF's is not "Dish Ready" for the next tenant.

I've seen refurbished equipment at retailers, but I'm told by Dish Corp installers they just don't use the old equipment. Now, an independent retailer would certainly use old stuff that still seems to work well.

Is this true for DISH CORP installers? If a Dish installer takes them back to the Corp shop and doesn't throw them out, perhaps the they are refurbed for retailers. I haven't coma across any Dish Corp installers who haven't said they "throw them out" as in put into the big bin in the back. However, Dish may instead require all the equipment by returned for proper disposal.

Now, I have had a situation were a tech was having problems, and it was easier for him to just use his BRAND NEW switch instead of the same model already installed. In that case he took the switch he replaced. He probably needed to account for the missing new switch in some way. However, with the last install, a Dish Corp tech took 500+ LNBF, Single DishPro LNBF, the old but still "usable" reflector and TWO DPP44 switches and put them in my garbage bin. Dish Corp techs seem to NOT want any of the old equipment, while retailers tried to trick my brother OUT of his DPP44 by putting TWO reflectors and giving him an OLD 722 saying it would be a better picture (he has only STANDARD DEF services) "for free" and at "no additional monthly charge" as a replacement for being allowed to take his DPP44 switch. They actually showed up at his house saying they had a work order to do the work that day. My brother called Dish directly and they said they have NO such work order in the system and it was escalated to some department I've never heard of, but they took down all the details he provided and told him it was "unauthorized" and that they would be seriously looking into it.

Also, one retailer refused to use a switch for an install, and instead mounted TWO reflectors to serve a mere THREE boxes for looking at only 119/110. He had them in the truck, but after being on the phone, he was told NOT to use a switch and to install TWO reflectors instead. My aunt agreed as it didn't make any difference to her because the reflectors could not be seen from the street, anyway. After gaining his confidence, I pushed the two reflectors instead of switch matter with him and he let out that his company (an independent retailer) always like to avoid using switches because of "cost."

Lots of weird Dish tech stories.

Yeah just for installers, we are supposed to swap em out if we show up and one is in use, and we don't install them anymore. A customer who.moves a lot can use it all they want.

Dish moved away from the tripod because it is lighter than the new patio mount.

Why would I tell you a fib....yes it is true for in-house installers.

We are supposed to bring back old electronic equipment to be refurbished and put back into service. They are tested at a facility, not my home office, determined to pass or not pass quality checks and either put into service or recycled.

I have installed plenty of obviously not new lnbs and switches in my time as an installer.

Being required to return the equipment or being to lazy and just throwing it away are two different things. Just because somebody tells you in the field "oh we only use brand new equipment on every job" downstairs make it true. Sometimes guys say stuff to make their job easier.

Like when a customer gets a 722 installed. "Is that new?" "Oh yes it is"....really its not, but if I say its refurbished then I have to explain why the perfectly good refurbished box is just as good if not better than a brand new manufactured box.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

remembers when ATT had stores and leased home phones

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

TrumpRx?!?

I went on Medicare recently (not an "advantage" plan) and my prescriptions at HyVee were very low out of pocket. The clerk said she was putting them on "Good Rx".

I take 10mg Rosuvastatin (Crestor). I was paying $34 for a 90day supply at Walgreens last year when I was on Blue Cross. My Blue Cross premiums were going up to $1800 a month this year, so I switched to an Ambetter Bronze plan (I think that's a Cigna company) for $825 a month. I now have a $40 copay for doctors visits which is fine as I usually only see them once or twice a year, so a huge cost savings. My Rosuvastatin was going to go up to around $90 for a 90 day supply at Walgreens and even more at CVS or one of the local family pharmacies. Ordering online thru my insurance portal from Express Scripts it's $0.74 for a 90 day supply.

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.
