MPAA ATTEMPTS TO BYPASS CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE
BROADCAST FLAG MAY BE SNEAKED IN THIS WEEK

Rumor has it that this Tuesday, June 21st, in a sub-committee on Commerce,
Science, and Justice, a single senator will propose an amendment, hidden
among many others, to re-animate the MPAA's broadcast flag and burn it into
law.

On Thursday, the full Senate Appropriations Committee will vote on that
amendment. If they nod it through, the Broadcast Flag will be law.

It's the lobbyist's oldest, and most desperate, trick. If you can't win in
the market, snag a regulator. If you can't snag a regulator, get a law
passed. And if you can't get a law, sneak an amendment into one of
Congress's giant Appropriations Bills.

If you've received this mail from us, your senator is one of the few with
the power to put a stop to the flag.

ACT NOW TO STOP THE FLAG

Your senator is on the relevant sub-committee or the full Senate committee.
You have less than 24 hours to warn him or her of Tuesday's manoeuvre. You
have only 48 hours to warn the full committee.

Letters are too slow. The press will be too slow. Only you, as a constituent
of a senator on the committee, can reach them in time, by personal phone
call or by fax.

IF YOU HAVE THIRTY SECONDS

Click here to use our action center: read, add your own comments, and then
send a message directly to your senator via fax and email.

<URL:http://action.eff.org/site/Advocacy?id=145>

IF YOU HAVE THREE MINUTES AND A PHONE

Here are the list of senator contact details. Pick the one that matches your
state, and leave a personal message warning of what's planned in the
Appropriations committee.

Please be cool, collected and polite. There's a sample script after the
phone list.

A TYPICAL CALL

"Hello, Senator _________'s office"

"Hi, I'm a constituent. I'm registering my opposition to the broadcast flag
amendment being introduced in the Senate Commerce Justice and Science
Appropriations subcommittee mark-up on Tuesday, and in full committee on
Thursday."

(*** You can give your own reasons for opposing the flag here. Here's a
sample: ***)

"The Broadcast Flag cripples any device capable of receiving over-the-air
digital broadcasts. It give Hollywood movie studios a permanent veto over
how members of the American public use our televisions. It forces American
innovators to beg the FCC for permission before adding new features to TV.
"

"This is an important issue which will affect all Americans, and should not
be inserted at the last moment, with almost no debate."

"Please oppose the broadcast flag amendment. My name and address are
___________________."

"Thank you for your time."

And thank you for reading this,

The activists at the EFF.

Does anyone know if these bast*rds actually submitted the bill on tuesday. I registered my letter with my senator. If this goes through we're all screwed. I can't believe these clowns are gonna get away with this.

We won't necessarily be "screwed" but we may have to resort to non-legal means to exercise our legal fair use rights, just as we now have to do to make a personal backup of a DVD. "Stupid law. Stupid laws were meant to be broken."

According to a soon to be posted article on Slashdot (link may not work quite yet), the broadcast flag was NOT amended into the appropriations bill. You can view the Thomas bill summary here. Pertinent information is clear at the bottom:
6/21/2005:
Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies. Approved for full committee consideration without amendment favorably.

Based on an EFF mailing I got, the Appropriations Committee members got 11,000+ faxes/e-mails.

Earlier this week, EFF learned that a "Broadcast Flag"
amendment might slip past legislative gates as part of an appropriations bill. We quickly sent out an action alert to EFF supporters in states with senators on the Senate Appropriations Committee, warning that within 48 hours, we could see a new law that would give Hollywood permanent veto power over how we use over-the-air digital television and force American innovators to beg the government for permission before adding new features to TV.

It's easy to see how this could happen. Despite the courts striking down the flag and powerful opposition in the Internet community, in many circles it's still considered "non-controversial."

But that was Monday evening.

Within the space of a few hours, the action alert hit the Internet. And you slammed Congress.

By 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the 27 members of the Senate Appropriations Committee received *more than 11,000 emails and faxes* from EFF supporters. That's nearly 500 faxes an hour. Dianne Feinstein alone received more than 2,600 messages in her inbox. Kay Hutchison, the senior senator for Texas, received 1,441 letters.

And these are just the numbers EFF has. We don't track telephone calls. But we do know that many of you listened when we joined Public Knowledge in urging you to call your senators directly. If you tried to call and the line was engaged, it was likely occupied by someone else griping about the same amendment. Staffers report that they are "swamped."

Today, the phone calls, email messages, and faxes continue to flood in. This is a mass protest even without voices from many of the more populous states, which don't have senators on the committee.

Suffice it to say that you don't get that kind of reaction except for *very* controversial bills. You did it. You got the attention of every senator on the Appropriations Committee.

And so far, it's working. No one proposed a Broadcast Flag amendment in the sub-committee on Tuesday. The next opportunity will be Thursday at 2 p.m. By then, everyone on the committee will have been briefed by their besieged staffers. And in the briefings will be words to the effect that this is an issue with "a great deal of voter concern."

For these senators, the Broadcast Flag now comes with its own red flag.

It's not over yet. The entertainment industry lobbyists won't give up easily, and there are plenty of sneaky tricks left to pull.

But by acting now, you've given your legislator a reason to decline Hollywood's advances. You may even have given a few the back-up necessary to *keep* declining.

We challenge you to keep the momentum going. Tell your friends and family about the Broadcast Flag, and forward the URL below. You know can make a difference - you already have.

Stop the Broadcast Flag!

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Is Dish like Iran in one way...they both will totally collapse by end of week :)

Other than the price, my experience with Boost is not that different than what I experienced with my years with Cricket. I will be curious to see what happens if SpaceX takes the reins.

Hate to say this no one is ordering Satellite TV. Both DISH and Direct no new customers.
After 25 years with centurylink DSL 80 speed i changed to Xfinity 300 speed for $50 wow lightning fast for streaming. Still have DISH 27 years with them. Americas 250 package for $103. What you think of superbox or vseebox for streaming is it legal?
Still dish is easy to operate and change channels. What will Charlie Ergen do with new super satellites with loosing customers with satellites and boost?

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

The fiber coming in to the house looks like 300 ohm old TV wire I think that is the weak point.

The weak point would be the connection between the outdoor feed and the indoor feed.

Charter lost 77,000 TV subscribers, the bigger news, it lost 233,000 broadband subscribers.

You would believe both companies would of learned from what happened with their TV services, which was ignore that cord cutting was a thing, allowed competition ( streaming) to get a foothold in the industry.

Now, in today's world, there are more households in the United States without a paid live TV than those with.

Both companies charge too much, delayed upgrades, all because they believed no one would leave them, only game in town, competition started with the 5G services, than Fiber, enough said, Cord Cutting 2.0 is here.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
