I posted a couple photos in the 'Winegard for Possible Rescue' thread of the electrolytic rust removal bucket I made. Overall, I'm very pleased with the results and at the very least it's a neat experiment.

I imagine that several on here have one or made one, but for those that haven't or never tried it - here's the small one I made (and it actually works). Now that I've built one, I wish I would've tried this before many cases of sandblasting or using a wire wheel.

Much of this is based on a pdf from "The Stovebolt Page" about Electrolytic Rust Removal, although there are many other sources.

Started off with a 2-gal bucket and marked positions equidistant around the top of the bucket. On this bucket, there were mold reinforcements on the band that the bail attaches that could be referenced. Used a spade bit to cut the holes.
SAM_6591.JPG

Next, cut a piece of flashing that would fill the space between the bucket reinforcement band and the lip on the top of the bucket. The idea was the band of flashing would fit up into the lip.
SAM_6592.JPG

Test fit the band to the bucket and decided it needed some trimming to fit around the bail moldings.
SAM_6594.JPG

After trimming, installed the band onto the bucket for final test fit. I maybe trimmed a bit more than needed.
SAM_6595.JPG

Marked the band from the inside of the bucket using the holes already drilled.
SAM_6596.JPG

For each hole location, a Romex clamp will be installed.
SAM_6593.JPG

At each hole location, drilled a small hole (3/8") and then used aircraft sheet metal shears to trim out the hole. After creating the hole, inserted the Romex clamp through the band and the bucket hole and threaded the nut onto the clamp. After installation, the band acts as a conductor and reinforcement for the top of the bucket.

SAM_6597.JPG

Next installed the sacrificial anode into the bucket. In this case it was 1/2" x 8" mild steel concrete L-bolts clamped into the romex clamps. 3/8" rebar would've been less expensive, but the hardware store was out of stock and didn't want to drive 30-50 miles one way for more. As is, this was around $20 to build.

There is a word of caution with the Stovebolt page instructions about using Stainless Steel, due to the chrome content.

SAM_6598.JPG
SAM_6599.JPG

Completed bucket with all anodes installed.
SAM_6600.JPG

For solution, I followed the 'Stovebolt Page' recommendations and used a Tablespoon of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda per gallon of water.
SAM_6607.JPG

To attach together cathode parts, annealed steel rebar tie-wire was used.
SAM_6608.JPG

All the parts tied together, going forward will probably result in fewer pieces at one time.
SAM_6602.JPG

Starting the electrolysis, the negative (-) from a battery charger clipped to the parts (cathode) and the positive (+) is clipped to the bucket sacrificial anode.
SAM_6605.JPG

Another view at start of process.
SAM_6603.JPG

Within 30 minutes of process.
SAM_6606.JPG

After a few hours, a mostly complete rust removal using electrolysis. I wound up cleaning a bit more on these and put them back in until all rusty parts were completely black.
SAM_6612.JPG

At first, I started with 12v 2A for the process. Wound up with 12v 6A for final cleanup.

All in all, I'm quite happy with the little bucket and plan on doing a 5-gallon version for larger projects. If anyone has more experience or tips on this, I'd definitely like input.

I'd messed around with similar before, experimenting with plating stuff, gold plated a car key and a few other small things with pins from old 286/386/486/etc processors. Copper plated some things too. It was quite a while ago, so I don't remember all the details of how I did it, I'd looked it up online. I do remember that sometimes what was left in the tub afterward looked real nasty though.

Is the residue from doing this really nasty, or pretty much just rusty water? I might give it a try, if what's left afterward doesn't look too toxic! I like that setup with the bucket and the Romex clamps, that's really a neat setup!

I can't really see the charger you used for this in the picture very well, but if you have one, a better power supply that has a cleaner DC output might work better. That charger looks like it probably would have a bit of AC ripple in the output. With the plating, a power supply with clean output made a huge difference. With just cleaning rust, it might not make quite as much of a difference. Thanks for posting that, cool experiment! Another one to add to my list of things to try! :)

Thanks for the reply and input! I'd recommend trying out something like this for cleaning any rusty metal projects.

The residue is dirt and rust crud in a washing soda solution. The caveat in the instructions recommended that one does not use stainless steel as the sacrificial anode because of hexavalent chromium release into the solution. Here's a photo after the water has set for a few days and everything has settled out.
SAM_6628.JPG

The battery charger is a Shumacher from O'Reilly Auto Parts; a middle of the road unit. Probably not a clean DC source, but it worked well enough for rust removal.
SAM_6629.JPG

Also included are the pdf instructions that I referenced from the Stovebolt Page...

A 100-1000 uf 50v electrolytic capacitor, across the terminals, would probably take care of any ripple.

Thanks for the PDF, downloaded it to check out later! That water doesn't look bad at all, I'm going to give it a try, thanks!

Now you'll have to zinc plate the parts so they don't rust again! :)

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

I like the new look, it's a lot cleaner. I'm using it on one of those Onn streaming devices when I travel.

Yes a lot cleaner, glossier, and less functional. Someone trying to justify why they are making a big salary. "See look shiny"

Several Dish offers showed up today in my account. Once you choose one the rest are removed. Offers were Showtime, Starz, AMC and others.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

You have a different offer that is free for a shorter timeframe which is different than the one that I and bnewt saw without defining the promotion period as I sent the question to DISH Care via Facebook Messenger and this is the response I got back 20 minutes ago.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

What software? For iPhones? I tried to buy some image s/w IN THE APPLE STORE! They had none, and could not offer ANY s/w for iPhones

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.
