I had an appointment today for getting Direct Tv installed. The guy showed up, looked around and said "The trees are going to block it, you can't get it installed here." He left. I called Direct TV they said they will try to send someone out within 72 hours to confirm what he said or not.

The thing is, I have had Direct TV here before. For a few years. It worked fine. I live in an apartment building and there are people all around me who have Direct TV. You can see a Direct Tv Dish right on the side of my building from someone else. We asked the tec. to just put our dish next to that one. He said no because it will block their access.

In my opinion the guy just couldn't be bothered to do the work today.

Direct TV doesn't seem to care. They seem to be more concerned with backing up their tec.

What can I do? I can't figure out how to speak to anyone there who could do anything.

Any advice?

Techs are lazy, especially when it comes to apartments.

Find a local dealer.

If there is already existing dish's up could the tech not add a multi switch to one of them and run your setup off an existing dish? Although I guess they would need to find out what equipment was connected to it already.

U&mm I take umbridge with your use of a broad brush..
You may have had recalcitrant techs that don't want to make any money under your employ, but please do not make unsubstantiated generalizations.
Lemme tell you something, Mister.....Apartments SUCK. Number one, the management company makes or breaks the tech and the customer. Around here, the majority of the middle to upper end apartment complexes limit placement inside the exclusive living area of the tenant Second, most management companies forbid modifications, penetrations or any kind. And roughly half of them do not allow any type of permanent attachment to railings, balconies or decks.
Dish tosses in their two cents with approved/unapproved equipment. And of course grounding is nearly impossible.
We went round and round with this crap every time a new GM at the local Dish in house tech office was hired. We had one GM who stated in his view "all jobs can be grounded" and wtih that he issued an edict that if an apartment job was not grounded, it was a fail. When asked about the issues regarding apartment management decisions and rules, he didn't want to hear it. He of course was a numbers guy. All he cared about were the numbers. Essentially he was telling us to tell the management people to pound sand. That guy didn't last long. Then the next guy wanted everything done by the book. Letters of permission, no tripods. no non-pen roof ( sled) mounts and no C- clamps. He said if apartment mgmts did not allow permanent type mounts, don't do the job. His approach was to avoid trouble calls. He was a new connect, mover guy, He did not want techs out on the road doing TC's for installs that were set up for failure. He wanted the techs to bring in revenue. He was also a numbers guy, but in a good way.
So you see, there sir, we did not walk away( at least I didn't) from apartments out of laziness( I wanted to make money), it was due to the rules set up by Dish.
Now, to protect myself and my income, I would not do any job until the customer could produce a letter of permission. Or a verbal OK from a manager.
Quite frankly, the moment I drove into an apartment complex for an install, before going to the customer's apartment, I would stop at the manager's office to make inquiries. If they gave the go-ahead, I got a letter from them. If they said no-go, I got that letter as well. One copy for our office and one for the now pissed off customer.
Now, on our retail jobs, we did not have to knuckle under to Dish's install matrix. So we got 'em in. But, for non permanent mounts, we had the customer sign off and agree that if the system stopped working due to the antenna being tampered with, bumped into or moved in anyway, we would charge them to realign the antenna ONCE free of charge then after that the fee was $60. Always with a letter of permission.....

That woulsd be the case in these apartment complexes where the majority of the tenants were Latinos. We'd see like 10 dishes on the wall or on poles. Cables just hanging all over the place. A real mess. Most of these places were dumps anyway, so nobody cared. I would not do those though. If I could not do a spec install, I walked. Fortunately I did not work a very apartment heavy area. Thank goodness.

I never said all techs where lazy, but a majority of them are especially when it comes to fulfillment work.

All during the summer I stayed busy doing perfectly normal jobs that the Directv fulfillment contractor blew off.

Very rarely I would ask for permission forms unless there where zero dishes.

Permission I mostly considered looking at every other install in the complex and using that as a rule as what was allowed or was not allowed.

As far as dealing with management, I tell the customer their rights and what they need. They can go get a letter of permission from their land lord or management.

The customer has more leverage with their land lord than we do anyways.

Going to the management office to seek permission first? Yes it looks like your trying to do the right thing, but you know dam well 9 out of 10 times they are going to tell you no when given an option.

If you go and install it and there are other dishes there, rarely will you ever have to come back and redo the install.

In my 18 years I think I might have had to come back 3 times to move a dish after the fact.

One of those 3 times I didn't go back because the customer was about to get disconnected for non pay and I told them I would be out to move it when the bill was paid

This is what you posted. "Techs are lazy, especially when it comes to apartments.".

Now, with regard to letters or permission....It is up to you if you wanted to accept that liability of installing a piece of equipment on someone's property without their consent. We were issued a RULE....DON'T DO IT.....
I was a contractor. And I was essentially on my own if I decided to take the risk. So, I didn't take the risk. I don't need that crap. I am not taking the risk of getting hauled into court to answer a $5,000 lawsuit ( inflated) for a $90 job. Not doing it.
Going to the management office sort of forced their hand. They would hand me their rules and I handed them a copy of SHRVA. Yes, i kept those with me. And for the most part, that exchange got me the go ahead to get the job done. As long as I went with the SHRVA rules.
As far as getting burned...Happened just once. I got an angry letter sent to my office regarding a non pen mount on a balcony that the management claimed did not fit the aesthetics of the community..Or some such. My boss goes looking for the job file. No letter. SCORCH.....Never let that happen again.

you see the confusion here... you said neither ALL, or SOME. and since most of us know your background, it sounds like you're saying all.

because you KNOW the other techs all talked to management and did the install to the best of their abilities... The jobs i ususally wanted to punch people in the face were most often apartments for either bad mounts or bad cable runs. at least the permission form means there was an effort to put someone elses property above your own interests.

so you KNOW management is going to say no, and you install it anyway?

If you go and install it and there are other dishes there, rarely will you ever have to come back and redo the install.

theres a lot of customers who have no IDEA that you are not employed by directv, so they call directv's number and now it becomes someone elses problem.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

This came up in my suggestions probably because of the video I posted. I had NO idea exactly what being color blind actually was. Now I understand why that man was so blown away with seeing the trees......a lot of color blind people see green as brown, so grass, trees, etc all look brown.

Often people who have organic vision or hearing activated as adults after never having had it cannot practically utilize it because their brains never developed the massive neural network needed to make sense of any of it.

Well, he sees in color, just differently. Can't he just enjoy that? My granny had anachromatic color blindness, meaning pretty much like a b&w tv

My son is rg colorblind, but we found there are degrees. If something is vivid red or green, he can see a hint of color. I bought him a pair of the glasses when they first came out. He said they did improve things slightly, but not to the extent they are being touted. I think they are sitting in a drawer somewhere.

Working well with about 3-4 days battery life. New BT and Wifi range is much better than the 15 I had. It doesn't seem any faster but probably is. The Camera shooting video has amazing image stabilization.
Only observed issue is once in awhile, the screen loses touch sensitivity and requires a soft reboot and delete the many open apps to fix. This happens about once a week since buying it.

If you know the folks who have fiber, strike a deal with them and pay for a Wavlink AX3000. I've installed these for customers and they will light up abut 10 acres. One customer is linking her security camera to it and the cam is about 1,000 ft from the radio. These are also usable as repeaters so you could install one at your house for that purpose. Heck, offer to pay 75% of their monthly bill if that's what it takes.

People that Own the poles ?
That would be ATT Or the Power Company depending on the situation ... easily figured out by looking at the Tag on All Poles.

Might not be an option, due to easements. I can't see governments allowing public property (easements) for exclusive use by just one company.

Just did the update check manually about an hour ago with Hopper 3 on H713 and Hopper Plus on P15403.
Noticed something new when I clicked on the Update Software, it presented a pop-up as follows:
"Update software 1573
Update later Update now Cancel" with those three buttons which did not exist before.

After updating the H715 - I guess there must be major bugs as both H709 and H714 were skipped.

So here are the issue(s):

Issue #1
It did fix the problem with H713 which was:
"One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software."

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency so H711 and H712 were working without that dependency but H713 brought it back which is fixed in H715 as no P versions or Android TV versions are shown in the Available Joey Software on the main Diagnostics screen.
However, with that said, the TECHNICIAN SETTINGS, Download ATV (Android TV) Files is not working correctly as the Download ATV Files shows:
"Download ATV Files 3000
Download in progress. This operation will be
complete when the files are downloaded

Joey 4 : P554- Failed
Joey 4 : P55403- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P654- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P65403- Complete
HopperPlus : P154- Complete
HopperPlus : P15403- Failed

OK"
From what I can tell, each of them goes through the Downloading followed by the Processing stages first before it goes into the Failed or Complete stage. It seemed to be going in a loop earlier as it will start downloading from the first item being the Joey 4 each time before it eventually stopped. This is the first time ever since 2023 that I had ever seen it Failed.

With that said, the dependency appears to still be required for the Hopper Plus to check, download and update the Android TV software as it says Failed, No Target when going to "Device Preferences", About, "Software Update"

Issue #2
Still cannot cast to Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus(Software P15317) with the Hopper Plus "Google Chromecast Built-In" feature" as it shows up as a casting device when the Hopper Plus is online and disappears when the Hopper 3 and Hopper Plus does it's nightly reboots but times out when one tries to cast to it and always shows up as Not available in the Google Home app on Android phone. No one else anywhere on the internet had confirmed whether it is working for them or not. Per brittanygarden in DM on October 16, 2026:
"We've been working with Google on this. We have a fix on the Google side projected for Q4. I know we're in Q4 now, but I will try to get a narrowed down timeline for you."

I have not been updated to 715 yet. I am on a QE "Beta" or Test version that did fix the audio issue. The last communication I had with the team mentioned that the full release of that fix was likely in December.
It would be nice to know if 715 does solve that issue of no audio when Dolby is ON, during 4K HDR events.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

I have tried the pill form and this liquid form and found the liquid to be far superior. It wasn't immediate, my joints slowly improved over time.

Another supplement I wanted to mention was Luteolin. This has two major benefits
1) it helps improve your memory
2) it has a unique anti-greying affect. Saw a Daily Mail news story about a year ago I guess and they were testing different antioxidants on black mice and found that the ones they gave luteolin to barely greyed at all where the control group greyed normally. Has something to do with this stuff preventing the hair roots from becoming damaged which is one of the causes of going grey.

Now I've been taking this supplement for a long time and at 62 I barely have any grey hairs at all.
If it would only help improve my ability to remember NAMES!!

Well, besides Luteolin, which I already mentioned. I also take Creatine which helps with memory and mental fatigue. It also helps with faster recovery times when doing hard physical labor, or workouts.

Given that Tubi is one of the hottest FAST services out there, I don't expect it to go anywhere. Building up intolerance for ads takes a while, and as long as the advertisers are willing to foot the bill, why not?

That is what I have to explain to customers all the time. They want it free with no ads :facepalm

Hmmm. Not watching much Prime, but it would be on our Apple TV STB.

You know of any drawbacks using Ultra and Prime?

Prime seems to have a problem passing the DV/HDR metadata to Roku and Apple devices, but no problem with their Fire devices.

The ads are boring and repetitive...same ad over and over...bring back 1970s ads..might not be as big an issue

Shouldn't this thread be in the IPTV forum?

Had a customer come in a couple weeks ago to pay her internet bill. She let me know in no uncertain terms that she did NOT appreciate me running the same ads over and over. I looked at her and waited for her to laugh and say she was just joking.......still waiting for that laugh.

There is one there too. I would think either is justifiable as they make both the device and provide a streaming program service.
