Every couple years I talk to Dish to see if we can switch from Directv. Currently, home is Genie and a couple receivers. RV is Winegard 1518, HR24 and AM-21 (the thing that takes OTA channels and gets 'em into the DVR. Its not HD, but it works, EXCEPT…
Directv, as far as I know, is still making noise about getting rid of SD and has stopped supporting the AM-21, so since we just went through the annual *&^%$# where they increase the monthly rate I figured it might be a reasonable time to talk to Dish. Again.

And much like Directv, I get different answers depending on who I talk to. And frequently the phone answerers say things like "I THINK that'll work" or "that MAY be possible", which does NOT fill me with confidence. SO, here's what I'd LIKE to do:

Home: 3 tvs, Hopper 3 and a couple joeys (wired? Wireless?).

RV is all over the place depending on who I talk to.
I have 1 TV. I would LIKE to RECORD at LEAST 4 or more channels (5 like the Genie does, or more, would be good) of ANY COMBINATION of satellite, local and OTA channels. And watch one channel presuming they're not all busy recording...

The Hopper at home HAS to remain at home and functional. It CANNOT go in the RV.

I want to have one account. If I have to have a separate account for the RV, Directv is still FAR cheaper than Dish. I suspect, like Directv, Dish is going to refuse to allow DNS channels, nor will they allow me to change the service address when on the road WITHOUT totally screwing up the home DVR. So I need to get OTA channels to the recorder.

The Winegard 1518 SAYS it can do Dish in HD. There are 2 outputs from the dome. I've been told it actually DOESN'T work for any of the current Dish equipment to enable me to record two concurrent HD satellite channels. I'd have to put a $1600 dish on the roof to get the same automatic capability I currently have, and would lose the flexibility of being able to move the satellite dish to a different location when the rooftop one is blocked. Which given where we frequently stay, is quite often.

So, I'm looking for a reasonable method of getting Dish on the road, and recording some combination of satellite channels, DNS service if I can get it, and if NOT, OTA channels when we have them, and/or local channels when we have them. In any combination up to the number of concurrent programs that can be recorded. So, 1 or more OTA channels AND 1 or more satellite channels, while watching an OTA or satellite channel – up to the maximum number of channels that can be handled.

I've gotten a variety of contradictory information…

So, exactly what CAN I do with a Wally and the 1518 in the RV? How many inputs will it accept, and how many channels will it record? And how does it handle OTA channels?

I've been told the VIP722K can record 2 channels (with hard drive), but it WON'T work with the 1518 and would need a $1600 dish. To record 4 concurrent channels I'd need TWO VIP722 units, each with a hard drive, and two of whatever it is that gets OTA channels into the thing. And some way to manage them and get the recorded shows from the two DVRs to the TV.

I was told by one of the "mobile experts" that in order to get the OTA channels into the DVR (not sure whether that meant a Wally or a 722) I'd need an OTA tuner, BUT that with this device any/ALL the OTA channels would be concurrently available to the <whatever dvr ends up in the RV>. I was then told by a DIFFERENT expert that the "ota tuner" would only make ONE channel available.

And was told by the "mobile expert" that a Wally is JUST a one-channel receiver. With an attached hard drive, it can record at MOST, one channel. And that there is NO way with Dish to have a combination of multiple satellite channels and/or multiple OTA channels recorded using one or more Wallys.

I've been told by Dish that I CANNOT have two Hoppers on the account. And again, if I were able to put a Hopper in the RV, it would require the $1600 dish. Or a cheaper one that's back to manually trying to find the satellites like we did 10 years ago. In other forums I keep getting responses like "I have 3 Hoppers on my house account and take one with me". But I never get a response to "HOW DID YOU GET THREE HOPPERS ON YOUR ONE ACCOUNT?"

SO, given all that, and my inability to determine which is real and which is utter BS, how do I get a simple setup at home that works and a simple setup in the RV that'll handle recording a reasonable number of channels of whatever is available (satellite, OTA, local, possibly DNS) - at LEAST as much as I'm currently able to do with the existing Directv setup, and preferably as good as I'm able to do with my current, very basic, home setup?

Always used a meter at the dish. Sometimes I was 200' away, very hard to hear the receiver at that distance.

Using DPP technology dish, a lot of reasonable priced meters handle aiming the dish. For Hybrid Hopper 3, the meter choice drops to very limited pricey options. Tools make the difference. In my heyday, a daily stop of aiming a Hughesnet internet dish, and a DPP 1000.2 tripod for Dish was a matter of thirty minutes including tripod setup.

Aiming through the trees with a dome is no simpler than with a tripod. At least with a tripod, you can have an idea of the hole you are trying to shoot through. There is no magic to a dome of shooting through trees.

Just like enough bandwidth internet, campgrounds are very often not near OTA towers to get good signals with the antennas RVs come with.

Dish uses two sets of three satellites, with duplicate programming on both sets for the most part. Some locals are only on one set or the other, while other locals are only on one set in HD and the other in SD. The "Eastern arc" sats are located more towards the southeast on the orbital arc not surprisingly, with the "Western arc" sats more towards the southwest. The eastern arc sats are at a higher elevation as you near the east coast, and the western arc is higher to the west. Both sets of sats are viewable everywhere in the lower 48, although the western arc's lowest sat at 129 degrees is very difficult to "see" from the far northeast due to its low elevation and fringe footprint. Since the two sat sets are at different elevations and in different directions from any location, when there are obstacles like trees, etc, one set is often easier to "see" than the other, making a dish that's capable of using either arc a definite advantage. Because the spacing of the sats is different for each arc, different LNBF's are needed for open face dishes, and switching LNBF's on an open face dish like the 1000.2 only takes a few minutes. Only a few automatic dome dishes are capable of dialing in both arcs, but your Carryout 1518 is not one of them. The 1518 only can only use the western arc satellites.

A HughesNET Gen 5 dish is now easier to aim than a 1000.2. Go figure.

Sure because the Gen 5 is a spot beam and you just can't take it anywhere.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

Only the Knicks, Nets, Wizards, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Lakers, Warriors, Avalanche, Sharks and Bruins feeds will be using remaps of 24/7 RSNs that night. The rest will be relying on the part time feeds, including the Nuggets, Blackhawks and Kings who will be on their alt/overflow channels, and MSG Western NY will be live on channel 635-1 to carry Buffalo area ads during the Knicks game.

The NHL Network alternate will be live on channel 215-1 with Red Wings @ Panthers for those blacked out of Golden Knights @ Bruins on the main feed.

The Thunder @ Cavaliers game will be on one of Peacock Game Pass channels that night for commercial customers, they'll also have the back to back U-Conn Women's and Men's Basketball. One of the part time feeds will also be in use for WWE Raw via Joe Hand promotions.

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
