I have a problem that I have been troubleshooting for about a year and have learned how to resolve it quickly when it happens, but not how to prevent it from happening again and again: about 3-5 times per week (so about half the times watching on the Joey), watching Streaming services (Netflix, Paramount+, Hulu, the Dish OnDemand programming that uses Internet, etc.) the streaming service will stop responding. At that point, everything that requires Internet access stops working on all 3 Joey's we have in our house, but not directly on the Hopper 3 -- still works there. Regular TV (live and DVR) still works fine. After a few minutes, the Joeys will pop up a gear icon and message in the upper right of the screen saying something along the lines of "Ethernet connection lost" or "Internet disconnected" (can't recall the exact wording, but it's something like one of those).

Resetting the Joey that started the problem or even all 3 Joeys has no effect.

Resetting the Hopper 3 does fix this, but that takes several minutes to complete the restart cycle and if anything was recording at the time, it will lose the recording while it restarts (usually happens during Primetime Anytime recording, so it would lose a lot). A faster fix that doesn't interfere with active recording is just to go to Settings -> Diagnostics -> Network -> Reset Network. That only resets the Ethernet, which fixes the problem and only takes about 1.5 - 2 minutes. But, that's still a hassle, especially if it's in the middle of a movie or a show and requires going into the other room with the Hopper to properly navigate the screen to do it (I've tried to just use the remote in the other room, but it's tough to get it right when you can't see the selection changes on the screen). Frankly, at this point, I'm just as likely to just switch to streaming over the Xbox, because that's a faster fix, but has the downside that switching back to watching TV or Dish DVR content is then a bit of a hassle.

Also, if I do nothing, it will be working again the next day. Presumably, that's because of the nightly Hopper reset, but not certain that's the source of the fix.

I've never noticed it happen when I'm not actively streaming, but it's possible that happens too and I just don't notice. It seems that the act of having the Hopper route significant Internet data over the MOCA connection causes it to sometimes fail. That is, it seems more likely to happen when pushing its routing capabilities by streaming 4K content rather than the low-level 720p HD content of Dish OnDemand. Not certain that's a factor, but seems like it. It also MIGHT be more likely to occur for some streaming services, like Hulu or Paramount+, than others like Netflix or Amazon Prime (maybe).

My first diagnosis was that the problem must be the Hopper 3, it's routing capabilities from Ethernet In to MOCA Out must be buggy -- problem occurs on all Joeys at the same time, but network access still works on the Hopper (and no Internet issues with any other devices like the Xbox, phones, or laptops), and resetting the Hopper immediately fixes. HOWEVER, Dish replaced the Hopper 3 for us with a brand new one and it had no effect on the problem. Same exact intermittent MOCA disconnects that are only fixable by resetting the Hopper or Hopper Networking. So, unless both Hoppers had this same bizarre problem, it's not the Hopper.

So maybe the coax wiring, but it occurs on all Joeys at the same time and why would resetting the Hopper's networking always fix it if there were a break or similar problem with the wiring?

I assume not everyone has this problem with the Joey 4, right? (Note: NOT the older Joey or Joey 4K -- only aware of this problem with the newest Joey 4 that supports 4K TV in HDR and runs Android TV to support downloading streaming apps like Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, Disney+, etc.)? If your Joey doesn't show Android TV at launch and include Google Play access to download all the various streaming apps, it's not the Joey 4. This has been a common point of confusion with Dish tech support who mostly don't seem to know the difference between the Joey 4 and the Joey 4K, which are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT devices (ironically, only the Joey 4 can do modern 4K due to HDR, where the older Joey 4K does not support HDR and so can only do a small subset of Dish's 4K content because now most 4K content also requires HDR, including the Super Bowl, which is how I first learned about this distinction). This is why I'm giving up on them and posting here.

Any ideas or even thoughts of other things I can try to stop the Hopper 3 from losing the Ethernet connection routing when streaming?

Summary for your diagnostic support:
  • Internet always works fine to the Hopper 3 and to other unrelated devices using the same Internet connection
  • TV and DVR always work fine on the Hopper and Joeys
  • Only MOCA Ethernet fails, leaving the Joeys without access to anything that requires Internet (streaming services and Dish's streaming On Demand). When it fails to 1 Joey, it fails to all 3 of our Joey 4 units.
  • Seems to fail only while streaming content (and maybe only content that uses more bandwidth, like 4K HDR, but not sure the type of streaming content matters)
  • Resetting Networking on Hopper 3 always fixes all Joeys and they can resume streaming, without even restarting the Hopper.
  • Dish replaced Hopper 3 with a new Hopper 3 - no effect
  • On average, probably happens about once per every 3 hours of streaming, but varies

I have been experiencing the same problem and it seems to happen more consistently on HBO Max than other channel, at least so far. Just wondering if you have been able to get this issue resolved

I am still seeing this happening as well. The other night I was watching MeTV Toons which is a streaming channel on DISH. And while watching got the message "Internet connection lost" on the screen, yet the streaming channel kept playing fine.

I exited and tried loading Netflix, Pluto TV and others and all told me I had no internet connection. So then I selected the streaming MeTV Toons and it played fine.

I rebooted the Joey and it still had no Internet Connection but MeTV toons kept playing fine. I wanted to reboot the Hopper but PTAT was recording and my wife was also watching TV so I did not do that. I just kept watching MeTV Toons.

I bet it will be fixed when you reboot your Hopper.

to make it wierder, I get similar messages and some time said streaming channels just drop to super lose res till nothing, and wierder part is if I try to start up netflix or prime video which does 4k there is zero issue with the streaming.

The problem seem to be with streaming channels, and something else I notice is it when this happen bandwidth test is coming back .5mbps or something stupid like that which also effect the on demand stuff, but for some reason not netflix or primevideo.

When this happen there is no amount of restarting of joey4 or hopper3 or the router fixes it. only solution is to wait, from my stand point the problem is coming from dishes side. There uplink or how they handle the streaming? cause if restarting all that does nothing is no longer our end less is some really odd bug in the system software for the joey 4 hopper 3.

I do have 2x h3 and 2x joey 4 setup connected wireless, and no disconnecting one of h3 from router dont fix nor does use a 2ghz and or 5ghz so i put the router back to combined signal, wired is not option.

This has been thing for quiet a few years now, which getting annoying seem most channel i watch now are streaming channels.

And when it is working correct bandwith test come back with 150mbit max down despite the router saying it negotiation 500mbit connection. and it not even 4 feet from the router,

Like I said last time DA expreience since the day it comeout has be that it terrible, streaming from h3 and dvr especially, only DA was working correct is when it defualt to streaming feed for watching live tv

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

TrumpRx?!?

I went on Medicare recently (not an "advantage" plan) and my prescriptions at HyVee were very low out of pocket. The clerk said she was putting them on "Good Rx".

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.

Actually I take just 2 prescriptions, Atorvastatin and Lisinopril. They cost me $6 each for 100 pills. Next year that will be nothing.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

remembers when ATT had stores and leased home phones

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.
