The leader in Internet phone calling appears ready to cash out

THE GROWTH of Edison-based Vonage-a 4-year-old company that claims more than 1 million subscribers for its Internet telephone service-is already one of the biggest New Jersey business stories of the 21st century. Now the chatter on Wall Street is that the company is preparing to go public or perhaps begin talking to buyers.

Either route would enable venture capital firms that have poured more than $400 million into Vonage to cash out. But both strategies face potential problems. Just last week a smaller Internet phone company called Cbeyond Communications had to slash its IPO offering price when investors showed litde interest. And big phone companies and other prospective Vonage buyers like cable TV companies can easily roll out their own Internet calling service. Many already have.

Vonage executives are mum, but published reports say the company has already selected four banks to manage an initial public offering of its stock that could raise $600 million.

Whether that number is realistic is anyone's guess, says Stephan Beckert, research director at TeleGeography Research, a technology research firm in Washington, D.C. "No one knows how profitable they are or aren't-and people won't know until they file," he says. "One thing we do know: They are adding subscribers at an impressive rate and they have established a market that didn't exist a few years ago."

Representatives at the company's operations center answer questions and solve problems for a growing number of subscribers.

Some analysts say now would be the perfect time for Vonage, which announced it had reached the 1 million-subscriber mark on September 6, to go public. As an alternative, a sale of the company in the near future could bring as much as $1.5 billion from a buyer-such as one of the Baby Bells-that could then bundle the service with its other offerings, analysts say.

An IPO makes sense, says Robert Rosenberg, president of Insight Research, a Boonton-based telecom industry analysis firm. "They are venture-backed and when you have venture [capitalists], the strategy is to take the company public to make their money back," Rosenberg said. 'An IPO is not an 'if', it's a'when.'"

He considers a sale a longer shot, since the Internet phone technology can easily be replicated. An IPO, and maybe even a sale, could work while Vonage leads the market, he says. "It's a question of timing. They have ereated brand-name recognition and they have a customer base, so there is an attraction there."

Vonage came on the scene in 2001, becoming one of the first companies in the U.S. to successfully sell Internet telephone service using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to large numbers of residential and small-business customers. The company, which is headed by CEO Jeffrey Citron, a founder of brokerage Datek Online, grew fast. It has raised $408 million in venture capital and spent much of it on advertising and getting its hardware into stores like Circuit City and Radio Shack.

VoIP Subscribers by Service Provider

The company has 1,400 employees, up from 250 two years ago when it had less than one-tenth the current number of subscribers. Vonage has announced-but not commenced-a plan to move to larger quarters in Holmdel.

Vonage's incredible growth will likely slow as large telecommunications carriers such as AT&T, and cable television providers like Cablevision and Time Warner, grab more of the market, TeleGeography predicts.

Telecom carriers and cable operators are in a position to easily bundle services and offer attractive package deals, butVonage still leads with 25% to 30% of the VoIP market. While Vonage releases only consolidated North American and U.K. subscriber figures, TeleGeography estimates that at least 750,000 of its customers in the second quarter were U.S. and Canadian subscribers. Time Warner follows with some 600,000 U.S. customers; Cablevision has 500,000.

Vonage has some advantages over the competition. "In some cases, it's cheaper," Beckert says. "Its service has been more consistent than some cable providers. And it is more portable." Cable and telephone providers' Internet phone products can be hooked up only in the areas where the companies already do business, while Vonage's hardware can be hooked up anywhere high-speed Internet access is available. "It moves with you," Beckert says.

Vonage offers residential telephone service that gives users unlimited local and longdistance calls for $24.99 a month, a price that traditional phone companies can't touch for their landline service. Vonage's edge: It avoids telecom taxes because its phone calls are routed over the public Internet, not the heavily taxed traditional phone network.

Analysts say that the sound quality with Internet phone service is not as good as with land lines, but better than cellular phone service. "It occasionally has hiccups, pops or bursts of static." Beckert says. "But it's a heck of a lot better than cell phone connections."

What drives Vonage's growth? "Their status as first in the market, word-of-mouth, advertising and their aggressive pricing," says Beckert.

"[Vonage's] service has been more consistent than some cable providers. And it is more portable."

Stephan Beckert

It looked like there were at least three iterations to try to match up to the given individual deficit, and a test to take to determine which would best help. But at best they seem a marginal measure and not practical.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'd probably say when they came up with their M-series of processors with integrated memory. That allowed Apple to get away from the inefficient Intel CPUs that were limiting their notebook computers.

Working well with about 3-4 days battery life. New BT and Wifi range is much better than the 15 I had. It doesn't seem any faster but probably is. The Camera shooting video has amazing image stabilization.
Only observed issue is once in awhile, the screen loses touch sensitivity and requires a soft reboot and delete the many open apps to fix. This happens about once a week since buying it.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

similar situation. almost every neighborhood around me has fiber, but our 3 block area. I called AT&T and was like, how hard is it to bring fiber over about 200 feet (I am closest to the folks with fiber and can see it on the poles from my front door); crickets and very frustrating.

If you know the folks who have fiber, strike a deal with them and pay for a Wavlink AX3000. I've installed these for customers and they will light up abut 10 acres. One customer is linking her security camera to it and the cam is about 1,000 ft from the radio. These are also usable as repeaters so you could install one at your house for that purpose. Heck, offer to pay 75% of their monthly bill if that's what it takes.

People that Own the poles ?
That would be ATT Or the Power Company depending on the situation ... easily figured out by looking at the Tag on All Poles.

Might not be an option, due to easements. I can't see governments allowing public property (easements) for exclusive use by just one company.

Just did the update check manually about an hour ago with Hopper 3 on H713 and Hopper Plus on P15403.
Noticed something new when I clicked on the Update Software, it presented a pop-up as follows:
"Update software 1573
Update later Update now Cancel" with those three buttons which did not exist before.

After updating the H715 - I guess there must be major bugs as both H709 and H714 were skipped.

So here are the issue(s):

Issue #1
It did fix the problem with H713 which was:
"One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software."

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency so H711 and H712 were working without that dependency but H713 brought it back which is fixed in H715 as no P versions or Android TV versions are shown in the Available Joey Software on the main Diagnostics screen.
However, with that said, the TECHNICIAN SETTINGS, Download ATV (Android TV) Files is not working correctly as the Download ATV Files shows:
"Download ATV Files 3000
Download in progress. This operation will be
complete when the files are downloaded

Joey 4 : P554- Failed
Joey 4 : P55403- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P654- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P65403- Complete
HopperPlus : P154- Complete
HopperPlus : P15403- Failed

OK"
From what I can tell, each of them goes through the Downloading followed by the Processing stages first before it goes into the Failed or Complete stage. It seemed to be going in a loop earlier as it will start downloading from the first item being the Joey 4 each time before it eventually stopped. This is the first time ever since 2023 that I had ever seen it Failed.

With that said, the dependency appears to still be required for the Hopper Plus to check, download and update the Android TV software as it says Failed, No Target when going to "Device Preferences", About, "Software Update"

Issue #2
Still cannot cast to Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus(Software P15317) with the Hopper Plus "Google Chromecast Built-In" feature" as it shows up as a casting device when the Hopper Plus is online and disappears when the Hopper 3 and Hopper Plus does it's nightly reboots but times out when one tries to cast to it and always shows up as Not available in the Google Home app on Android phone. No one else anywhere on the internet had confirmed whether it is working for them or not. Per brittanygarden in DM on October 16, 2026:
"We've been working with Google on this. We have a fix on the Google side projected for Q4. I know we're in Q4 now, but I will try to get a narrowed down timeline for you."

I have not been updated to 715 yet. I am on a QE "Beta" or Test version that did fix the audio issue. The last communication I had with the team mentioned that the full release of that fix was likely in December.
It would be nice to know if 715 does solve that issue of no audio when Dolby is ON, during 4K HDR events.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have taken this stuff for years to help my joints. Over 20 yrs ago my shoulder sounded like it had gravel in it when I rotated it. Started taking this and after a few months I had my range of motion back. I mentioned this product to a doctor and told him the results I had and he totally blew it off....said it was just a coincidence. This has no shellfish like most joint supplements.

Another supplement I wanted to mention was Luteolin. This has two major benefits
1) it helps improve your memory
2) it has a unique anti-greying affect. Saw a Daily Mail news story about a year ago I guess and they were testing different antioxidants on black mice and found that the ones they gave luteolin to barely greyed at all where the control group greyed normally. Has something to do with this stuff preventing the hair roots from becoming damaged which is one of the causes of going grey.

Now I've been taking this supplement for a long time and at 62 I barely have any grey hairs at all.
If it would only help improve my ability to remember NAMES!!
