Hopefully, sometime between 12-5 today a nice installer-type person should be coming to my house. I have some final questions (and hopefully, I won't need to write again for help *after* it's installed. Everything will just work, right? ;)

1. I ordered from dishnetwork directly (I know, I know). Will they be able to give me the number of my local installing contractors? (You know, in case nobody shows up?)

2. Would it be prudent to call this local installation outfit to confirm they actuallly have me a work order for me today?

3. The place where the 522 is going doesn't have a phone jack. Should I call in advance and inform them of this? Also, do installers carry the wireless phone jacks, and what's the price difference between one of those and getting a jack installed? (I can buy one myself for $80 at Best Buy, and possibly less at Radio Shack).

4. I have a DVD player that plugs into my RCA jacks on the TV (The Red, White, and Yellow.) I also have a VCR that plugs into my coax on the back. Since my TV only has one set of RCA ports, is this going to work? Or am I going to just have to switch between the DVD and Sat at the moment (one of these days, I'll have a real tv, with stereo sound even).

5. How long does installation take if there are no "surprises". I absolutely have to be gone by an hour after the install window (12 - 5) and I'm wondering if I should call the dispatch before hand to tell them that.

Well..first about the install. Its depends on how much he has to do. My guy was here
for almost 3 hours and he still did not do everything he was suppose to. I have a 36in tv hooked up to my stereo plus I have a VCR, CD player, DVD player and sony receiver all hooked up for surround sound. I also have a radio shack switch box that I use when
playing a DVD. If you have two tvs hooked up to one receiver, like me, make sure your second tv looks as good as the main tv. About the phone cord. My guy told me I did not have to keep it connected for long...two days he said, so I just hooked it up
in a temp position thinking I could remove it soon. Wrong..according to the folks at dish. I had to drill a hole going downstairs and back up behind my tv so I could hide
the cord...what a pain. Make sure he grounds the system..usually to a cold water pipe in the basement. Make sure he explains everything to you. If it is a contractor I think they get paid by the job so they may rush though. I got a tech straight from Dish. The first thing he said to me was, "I think we might have to do this another day"..it had snowed about an inch the night before and he did not want to go on the roof. Turns out he was able to install it low enough so that a small step ladder was enough. Its good for me too because I can clean it off easily if need be.

Yesterday I got up and had no color and spent over 2 hours with the tech folks trying to get it back. Well it worked but now my surround sound does not work. They are coming out tomorrow to fix it. I know its something simple like an RCA jack problem but I got fed up with trying to fix it myself. I have a ton of wires hooked up. First they said they would be out in a few days but they called back later and gave me a quicker appointment. I had told them that if they could not fix it to be prepared to take their stuff out of my house. I am not a patient person when it comes to this stuff. I am glad I didn't sign any contract. I think it gives me more clout because they know I can simply cancel at any time. I am happy with the picture and the sound. They do have to make it easier for those folks like myself that are not very technical. I can see why some older folks don't want to switch from Cable. My parents who are in their late 70's would not have been able to troubleshoot any problems over the phone with a tech person. Good luck.
S
An update. The tech person did not come on Monday. I called them up and they said
the "new" date that I was given was not entered into the computer. I was first given an appointment for this thursday but later on Saturday a Customer service person called and told me they had an opening for Monday, yesterday. They said she might
have penciled it in. I have never heard of that especially in the age of computers.
Anyway they gave me a new date...wednesday afternoon. I told them if they did not show up I could simply cancel and go with Direct TV. I am so glad I did not sign a contract. This is the only problem I can see with Dish or Direct TV..it seems that it takes them a lot of time to fix the problem. I had cable since it first came out and I
never had to have a tech come out and do anything. They also did not have be troubleshooting the problems for them. Like I said, I spent well over 2 hours on the phone Saturday trying to solve the problem with a tech. I wasted Monday and lost
over $300 because I was home waiting for them. I will lose the same amount of money
on wednesday.....that is $600 dollars I am losing which I could use to pay my bill.
I am not happy.

IS Amiko MIRA 3 any good ???
Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Say, I don't wear socks or shoes in my house either. But for a captain in Star Fleet it looks bad to be walking around the academy with no shoes. Gives off 1960 Hippie vibes.

If you ponied up for an iPhone Duo, keep it away from anything other than your soft, fleshy fingertips. No fingernails, no dust, sand, dirt, or other particulate matter. And don't bend it more than it needs to. Zack has destroyed $2,000 of Apple hardware to get those views, which should cover his expenses.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).
I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.
