DirecTV Touts HD Ambitions
But EchoStar Makes Subscriber Gains From Frustrated Viewers

DirecTV touted its ambitious HD plans at an investor's conference last week, while many customers appear as frustrated as ever with the satellite operator's HD offerings and practices.

DirecTV assured Wall Street during the Kaufman Bros. conference in New York that by the end of 2007, the satellite provider will have enough capacity to offer 1,500 high-definition local channels and 150 national HD channels. Plans call for the launch of DirecTV's ninth and 10th satellites in the spring and summer of next year. DirecTV also touted its local channel growth, noting that the company can provide HD local channels to 58 percent of all U.S. households.

But in the meantime, DirecTV customers are venting their frustration in online forums. Currently DirecTV offers only seven channels in its HD package, compared with competitor EchoStar's 29, more than four times as many.

DirecTV's lineup is so crunched that last Sunday TNT HD was taken off the air to temporarily make room for NFL Sunday Ticket HD. In other words, the service literally cannot add an HD channel without taking one down.

Romulo Pontual, DirecTV's executive VP and chief technology officer, said this week that on future Sundays, the company will not necessarily yank TNT HD but rather "whatever [channel] is not relevant for the afternoon."

And then there's the issue of quality. HD fans love the format for its clarity. But for years hardcore DirecTV viewers have derided the service for providing "HD Lite"—a downsized resolution image that doesn't hold up when placed side by side with certain competitors.

"I have seen those alleged posts … we carry two HD channels on each transporter, and I believe EchoStar is the same," Mr. Pontual said. "I don't think we're making our services any worse—our services are good."

In recent quarters, EchoStar seems to be profiting from DirecTV's sluggish response. At the end of the second quarter, 1.3 million of DirecTV's 15.5 million subscribers had an HD package (up from 700,000 from the same period last year).

EchoStar's Dish Network service has about 12 million subscribers and is typically very protective of its HD subscriber count—even declining to provide the information when directly asked on a recent investors conference call.

But according to Kagan Research, EchoStar will have 1.6 million HD subscribers by the end of the year (compared with 600,000 at the end of last year).

The numbers are difficult to compare apples-to-apples since the firmest DirecTV figures are for the second quarter, and best available EchoStar figures are year to year. But if Kagan's projection holds up, the figures indicate 85 percent growth for DirecTV versus 166 percent for EchoStar.

Factoring in Kagan's projection for DirecTV, the race is tighter: 800,000 at the end of last year and 1.9 million projected at the end of this year (a 137 percent increase).

In terms of overall subscribers, EchoStar is firmly growing faster than DirecTV. During the most recent quarter, EchoStar added 195,000 subscribers compared with DirecTV's 125,000.

Mr. Pontual said he expects the next quarterly report to show a significant upswing in HD subscribers now that DirecTV has released its long-awaited proprietary HD DVR, which sells for less than the previous Tivo-based model offered by the satellite operator.

"We were selling the other DVR at a premium price," he said. "Now we have our DVR and we dropped the price and are selling every one we can produce. You're going to see a reversal … you're going to see a huge uptake in the HD package."

Here are some points to ponder in conjunction with his comments and events:

1. Dish down-rezes as well and the DirecTV product is as good; which I think was his point. I don't think that he was tauting or slamming either, just stating they are doing the same basic things and provide a good product; not great/perfect

2. DirecTV has always stated that the majority of current and likely sub's want LIL HD now, HD RSNs, and then national HD (when looking at what nationals are available to add now). HD LIL and RSNs add current/new programming and live events and most national HD that has yet to be added it nothing but reruns, and upconverts. DirecTV remains true to this process and should not be faulted for what they know most of their subs want, as opposed to the handful of us hardcore HD subs want. We are the minority and DO NOT pay the bills. YET! They can't please everyone all the time, but they MUST please the majority. Cause if the bills don't get paid NONE OF US will get ANYTHING! and although I don't think it would ever get that far, I would rather not end up like PrimeStar or Voom.

3. As related to #2, DirecTV got "caught with their pants down" by the Dish purchase of the Voom satellite - Rainbow1. This is where they (Dish) got the JUMP; the vast majority of extra channels and minimal extra space to add a few additional national HD now. DirecTV obviously did not see this coming BUT still has to stick with the build and deploy schedule for DirecTV-10 & 11. Dish also now seems to be suffering from the same PQ & down-rez issues that people slam DirecTV for and what are their current plans for new satellites compared to DirecTV?

4. I didn't see, but why didn't they talk more at length about the TNT vs NFL channel issue? This is what really needs to be addressed ASAP. It at minimum needs to be explain what happened, and how it will be addressed for the remainder of the season; did I just miss those details?

Great objective post. As it relates to your first three points, I was thinking the exact same things.

I think both D* and E* realize that--from a marketing standpoint--neither needs to appeal the the highly technical HD fan (like most of us) at this point in the game. I can't wait to see if the day will ever come when leapfrogging the competiton will mean that either D* or E* will actually tout resolution, bit rate, etc.

(Can't remeber if SVHS ever did anything for VHS or if SuperBeta ever did anything for Beta....well, we know how the last one went.)

I dont know whether to be upset or flattered at this attack upon me in my absence from this thread until today. Seems like you are the one doing the crying here though.

Crying naaah you got it all wrong, I am looking objectively at this article, and stating a fact that you bash directv every chance you get...I never put a personal attack in there.

also can the two of you who is having a back and forth take it to p.m. or out of threads, the last three threads I have read have had you two going at it, thanks!

I think I tend to agree with D* saying that subs want HD LIL first. Personally the only reason I haven't switched to E* is because I wouldn't be able to get my HD DNS channels which I love for college and NFL football in HD. So I continue to wait in hopes that next year we will see some significant offerings in national HD as we have been promised. Now if we don't see new national HD by the end of next year I will definitely have to rethink my position.

I don't think the wishes of the D* subs has much to do with the focus on HD LIL.

I think D* anticipated what may happen when the analog channels get shut-off. By that time there will be lots more HD available (local and national). The NAB will make a big stink with the FCC about cable/DBS needing to carry HD and multicast feeds. Rather than trying to fight the FCC later, D* is investing now in its future; they will have an infrastructure in-place, and be ready to handle the mandates that are bound to happen.

It's also about competing with cable. If local cable operators have local HD, then D* needs it to compete.

Whether subscribers consider it a high or low priority is at-best the third reason behind competition and regulatory issues.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Which one has O'Neil being Ancients? I am at the end of Season 8 now.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
