MALONE LOOKING OVER DOLANS' RAINBOW MEDIA
By PETER LAURIA and ZACHERY KOUWE
CABLE BUYS: Liberty Media's John Malone (above) may be the new owner of the Dolans' Rainbow Media - home to cable TV channels WE, AMC and IFC.
January 3, 2007 -- Media maverick John Malone is reaching out to Cablevision's controlling Dolan family to gauge the family's interest in selling Rainbow Media, the unit that manages cable networks AMC, IFC and WE: Women's Entertainment, according to sources familiar with the matter.

While these people characterized the talks between Malone's Liberty Media and the Dolans as informal chatter between friendly moguls, they could easily become more serious as Cablevision's shareholders grow increasingly restless with the company's three-month silence regarding a decision on the family's $19.2 billion buyout proposal, sources said.

"Look, they have already done most of the analysis," said one shareholder, referring to a previous buyout proposal made by the Dolans in 2005. "All they have to do is plug in the new price and figure out what the company's fair value is."

Frustration over the foot-dragging has been compounded by the fact that two other companies, Clear Channel Communications and EMI Group, have already acted on offers to take them private that came well after the Dolans made their bid for Cablevision. Clear Channel agreed to a sale. EMI quickly said a takeover offer didn't reflect the company's full value.

Cablevision, meanwhile, has yet to act. The company set up a special committee, made up of board members Thomas Reifenheiser and John Ryan, but it has yet to publicly approve or reject the Dolans' offer and is unaware of a potential deal with Liberty, sources close to the committee said.

That suggests that any Rainbow talks haven't reached the point of Cablevision sharing confidential financial data, at which time the special committee would need to be notified.

Even so, it is widely believed that the Dolans will have to raise their $27 per-share offer to at least $30 in order to get a deal done. Cablevision's shares closed trading Friday at $28.48.

If the Dolans were to sweeten their bid, they'd either have to take on more debt or raise additional cash. Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch have agreed to provide up to $10.9 billion in debt financing, but Cablevision's existing lenders have capped the amount of debt the company can take on. Bear and Merrill recently extended the deadline for the Dolans to accept their funding commitments - already twice delayed - to Jan. 12. Enter Malone.

Representatives for Liberty, Cablevision and the Dolan family all declined comment for this story.

A deal for Rainbow's programming assets, which also include about 20 high-definition genre cable networks and a smattering of regional sports channels, could easily generate north of $2 billion.

For Malone, Rainbow's programming assets would solidify the foundation he now has with DirecTV, which last month he agreed to acquire as part of an asset exchange with News Corp., which publishes The Post.

"Now that he has DirecTV, Malone needs to build some synergies," said The Carmel Group's Jimmy Schaeffler. "QVC and Starz/Encore are good beginnings, but it sure would help if he had control of other content assets as well."

but didnt Charlie buy part of Voom? The satellites and an interest in the programming part?

http://www.tvpredictions.com/directvvoom010307.htm

Published report says new owner Liberty Media is considering an offer.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 3, 2007) -- Liberty Media, which recently purchased satcaster DIRECTV, is now interested in buying Rainbow Media, which includes 15 Voom High-Definition TV channels.

The New York Post reports that Liberty Media Chairman John Malone is engaging in "informal chatter" with the Dolan family, which owns Cablevision, which owns Rainbow Media.

Liberty Media is expected to take control of DIRECTV in the second half of the year. The company secured the satcaster in a stock swap with News Corp. late last year.

With DIRECTV expected to expand its high-def lineup later this year, the Voom HD programming lineup would be a nice addition.

EchoStar, a DIRECTV rival, currently has an equity stake in Voom, but that might not be an obstacle to Liberty Media making the deal. Malone recently said he may look to partner with EchoStar on various high-def projects.

In addition to Voom, Rainbow has the IFC, AMC, and WE (Women's Entertainment) channels.

According to Reuters, Cablevision officials refused to comment on the New York Post report. Liberty Media officials were not available for comment.

Things really are looking brighter now that Rupert is gone. Imagine the possibilities without that ridiculous Voom bashing attitude.

"With DIRECTV expected to expand its high-def lineup later this year, the Voom HD programming lineup would be a nice addition. "

All of the sudden Voom is starting looking like a "nice addition"...

I wouldn't expect Malone to end HD Lite. Only time will tell but remember who were the proponent of a "Starz High Resolution" because they could not see a difference between "High Resolution" and "High Definition". I am sure they will be propose the same argument no difference between "HD Lite" and "High Definition". I can see this their way out of making the right thing.

but didnt Charlie buy part of Voom? The satellites and an interest in the programming part?
Yep, but it's not a controlling interest so this shouldn't pose a problem...else, Malone wouldn't be interested.

VOOM-Lite has been nothing but a placeholder in the DishHD lineup. I don't see how this deal would hurt anyone. Of course, DirecTV has been touting their, "we want to be the HD Leader" mantra since the Fall of 2004 so they will actually have to bring new HD channels to their lineup before anyone gets too excited.

IS Amiko MIRA 3 any good ???
Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Say, I don't wear socks or shoes in my house either. But for a captain in Star Fleet it looks bad to be walking around the academy with no shoes. Gives off 1960 Hippie vibes.

If you ponied up for an iPhone Duo, keep it away from anything other than your soft, fleshy fingertips. No fingernails, no dust, sand, dirt, or other particulate matter. And don't bend it more than it needs to. Zack has destroyed $2,000 of Apple hardware to get those views, which should cover his expenses.

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).
I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.
