Imagine a set-top box that could provide a full complement of video channels, including all local stations in any market, pay-per-view programming, interactive games, plus high-speed wireless Internet access. Imagine a wireless transmission system behind this set-top box that can be easily upgraded in capacity in less than a day through a simple add-in card at a local cell tower. Imagine this video service being offered to consumers throughout every market in the country for about $39 a month.

This system is Northpoint Technology. It could be carrying DBS signals but given the DBS companies' current stance it probably won't be. For many years the two DBS giants have fought Northpoint at the FCC, in Congress and in the press. We believe their opposition to Northpoint will place them on the wrong side of history. By opposing rather than embracing Northpoint as a complementary technology, the two DBS giants have committed themselves to a high cost, limited capacity infrastructure that can provide only an imperfect replacement to cable.

Lack of capacity is a significant competitive weakness for DBS that will only get much worse as HDTV and other rich media content become more prevalent. By rejecting Northpoint's many overtures to cooperate and closing themselves off to innovative terrestrial reuse of spectrum, the DBS giants squandered the opportunity to maximize their capacity, and, as a result, digital cable now threatens the growth of satellite TV.

At the dawn of the DBS industry in the early '90s, Northpoint inventors Carmen and Saleem Tawil, two communications engineers in Austin, Texas, had the terrific idea to solve the local signal problem by transmitting terrestrially in the same spectrum used by DBS. The Tawils worked out the geometry and power levels needed to operate without interference and were awarded six patents for the innovations.

In 1999 Northpoint applied to the FCC for operating licenses at the same time as seven satellite applicants that sought to operate non-geostationary satellite systems over the same frequencies. In 2000 Congress passed the ORBIT Act that exempts international and global satellite systems from licensing through competitive bidding. In 2001 the FCC determined that all parties could share the same spectrum and announced it would grant the satellite licenses while dismissing Northpoint's applications. Northpoint believes that it should be licensed in the same manner as the satellite companies.

Readers of these pages are no doubt aware that the satellite industry has been given virtually all of the spectrum it uses free of charge. The FCC has only held a total of four satellite auctions in its entire history. The last one was held almost seven years ago. Since that time the FCC has awarded over 150 satellite licenses without auctions, including dozens of licenses for domestic services. The fact that the FCC has not charged the satellite industry a high, up front "auction tax" is a crucial factor in the satellite industry's success. Hughes Electronics is the largest spectrum holder in the United States and it has never participated in a single auction. SES Americom is the second largest spectrum holder and, again, it has never participated in an auction.

Northpoint has not suggested that the FCC reclaim the satellite licenses so they can be sold to the highest bidder or even today hold DBS auctions. In fact, Northpoint invented a technology that allows it to share the spectrum used by satellites so that no displacement is necessary to accommodate new users. Northpoint simply seeks the same licensing terms that have been so successful for the satellite industry.

Of course, we are hardly surprised that industry incumbents would lobby Congress and the FCC to support an auction so as to delay and burden a new competitor. But this opposition is shortsighted. We believe a much more productive course for the DBS industry would be to embrace our technology and use it as an enabling platform to create a true, high capacity, low cost competitor to cable. DBS was first envisioned as a true alternative to the cable monopoly; yet, without the capacity needed for Internet and localized rich media applications it will never attain its full promise. Northpoint is the technology that can make this vision a reality.

It was interesting reading.

I'd like to hear more of the debate (without hyperbole)…

I sincerely hope that they follow this item up with a writing from a person truly knowledgeable of the situation on the DBS side of the isle. Perhaps a rebuttal of points where appropriate, and hopefully to give an opinion as to what the real-world interference impacts might be upon DBS users by the proposed Northpoint Service. This subject is conspicuously missing from Ms Collier's writing, and is (along with 'competition') a major concern of the DBS operators.

I would like to see a neutral party do a study on the potential interference. This technology has real promise IF it does not interfere with DBS....
Mark Sorensen
A neutral 3rd party DID do an analysis back in 2000-2001.

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/info/mitrereport/mitrereport_4_01.pdf

Which the SBCA (Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association) says "confirms harmful interference to DBS operations from Northpoint Technology"

Unfortunately, it is 208 pages long. Sure to put the most insomniac of insomniacs fast to sleep :) …. But there are so many variables, so many assumptions made about a variety of factors, plus the fact that in reality every single instance of a DBS installation could have very unique performance issues due to unique physical characteristics of each site, and the relationships to the DBS satellites and Northpoint transmitters.

Even the 7 page "summary" is a doosy…. http://www.sbca.com/Exec%20summary%20from%20MITRE.pdf

I've worked with RF for a few decades… there are some situations that I have a pretty good feel for what will and will not be problematic… this one does not look too good to me – but I don't know… There definitely IS an "increase in unavailability" to DBS users (as they call it in the study), but what exactly that means to the average 'Joe Sixpack' is not crystal clear to me. Though, I think I get the idea, and said it here: http://www.satelliteguys.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=678
.
Stargazer
If such a technology would not cause harmful interference with DBS frequencies, then DirecTv and Dish Network themselves would want to use this technology.

Also Dish Network may be releasing broadband internet by satellite with free equipment for $39 a month.
Mark Sorensen

Perhaps. But their licences are for DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite). Not a terrestrial service. That frequency band was set aside as 'DBS ONLY' with 9 degree wide satellite spacing to avoid interference issues, and facilitate small dish sizes (larger dish size does produce a better signal to noise ratio, therefore offers better noise/interference immunity).... So, the first part of the game is to create that terrestrial usage allotment where none existed before.

If DirecTV or DISH would have attempted such move (creation of the terrestrial usage)- at that moment in time, they would open up pandora's box. Because it is logical to assume that such a service allotment would be open for application, or up for auction to others. Logical that is, unless you are Northpoint who wants (desperately) to be anoited with the keys to that kingdom for free. And you have the polital connections to make it happen.

But, if it does go out to auction or open application, It would not surprise me in the slightest to see DirecTV or DISH compete for it. That is, if the FCC allows them to participate in what could be a competing video delivery service.

Also Dish Network may be releasing broadband internet by satellite with free equipment for $39 a month.

I believe that at Team Summit in Atlanta earlier this year, Charlie said "2-years"... that could put a roll out in early 2005. Though I'm sure that if anyone can push the time-line up, it is Charlie Ergen.

I believe that is among the primary slated uses for the Ka band capacity on EchoStar 9: http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/aboutus/satellites/echo9/index.shtml
assuming that there are no problems with the satellite, and it is performing as they hoped, they I could certainly see it happening ahead of that 2005 date.

I had an old Wireless Joey replaced by a Wireless Joey 4 (Android TV) - still have a Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. What do I have to do to get the EPG to show channel logos instead of "Dish"? This is annoying as hell and it's been this way for over a month…

Just so you know, my WJ4 (with no Hopper+) shows all the logos. I can't think of why yours isn't. I'll do some digging in the settings.

They "should" appear after a few days. If not reboot the hopper and joey. Sometimes it needs a kick.

There are some channels that would not show the logos but the ones you listed should all have logos as I have a Hopper 3 + Hopper Plus here. You might try forcing a Guide Update first before doing what Scott mentioned.

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

Such a scam. Healthcare.gov shows me cheaper individual plans available for 2027 from ambetter that ambetter doesn't show on their website. Looked it up. I've spent $68,000 in premiums the last 5 years and got nothing out of it except a few doctors visits and labs. 😡

That's why I cancelled ours and just started saving the money. We're about to do the same thing with our home insurance.....not cancel it outright but do away with the portion which covers wind damage. We're paying over $5k right now and that is AFTER I dumbed things down...and it keeps going up. Got a couple trees I want to have taken down first before I do that however. After we do that, it will knock about $3k off our annual premium.

My wife and I use the same Medicare Advantage plan from United Healthcare. (Yes I have heard the horror stories about Medicare Advantage plans but we have used it for the last 5 years). We are both pretty healthy so it works for us. It costs $0.00 per month for both of us and it pays part of our Medicare part B premium. Next year it will be paying $170 per month of the $220 monthly part B premium for both of us. We also each get $90 per quarter to use on OTC products. $0.00 copay for Dr. visits and $55 copay for specialists. Includes dental and hearing coverage. Never have had an issue with it although I don't really use mine other than for the dental, Part B payments and the OTC benefit as I am a veteran and use the VA for all of my medical needs. I just had a kidney that had a cancer mass removed last month and they allowed me to use a non VA surgeon at a non VA hospital through the VA Community Care program. For all of the doctors visits, exams, tests, surgery, hospital stay, meds etc…was around $60,000 and the the VA paid for it entirely. I did have to pay $16 for the Oxycodone pain pills when I left the hospital that I got from my local CVS instead of waiting for a week for the VA to ship them to me from the VA pharmacy.

$0.00 copay for Dr. visits
And THAT is one of the big issues causing a lot of the problems. If the minimum copay for Dr. visits was at least $100 then a LOT of folks would opt out of those visits. If it cost the individual nothing then why should they care. All of my older family members are constantly going to doctor visits.....to them it is an adventure.....an outing that allows them a reason to go out to eat at a restaurant. IF they had to pay one cent out of their own pockets a lot of that crap would stop asap.

Sorry...rant off.

You're not wrong that some people treat free visits like a social outing. But it has to be a balance. Put a $100 barrier on a doctor visit and people don't just skip the pointless ones, they skip the important ones too. Then the stuff that would've been a cheap catch at a checkup shows up later in the ER, sicker and way more expensive. The shift we need is from sick care to actual healthcare.
dishstaller
But it has to be a balance.
Unfortunately, humans tend to suck at finding a balance in just about anything.

They go to the Doctor for everything.
I see a LOT of that. And yes...they DO go to the doctor for EVERYTHING.

I was sick a couple months ago, either light flu or cold. First thing my Mom asked me when I told her was "You need to go to the doctor". I said WHY......I know what to do....it'll last a few days and I'll be fine.

The biggest problem with paying nothing out of pocket is that people quickly don't want to pay a penny for anything. Had an older customer in the store the other day. He mentioned that he had just come from CVS and I guess he wanted to rant. He said he went to pick up his prescription and "they changed my plan and wanted $4, they used to be free...I told them to stick them somewhere and walked out". BTW, he was in the store buying a new remote. So he HAD money for a remote but not $4 for this medicine that somebody somewhere thought he needed.

Yes. I covers ANYTHING wind related. If the wind blows down a tree on my roof...that is wind related.
That is why I want to take out a few trees first before I drop it.

I'm not worried about my roof. House was very solidly built and has hurricane straps. I put the metal roof on myself with the help of a friend and I recently replaced all of the outer screws with #12 2 in screws which I also dipped the tip in silicone before driving them in. Any other damage I'll fix myself like I did after Michael gave us a visit in 2018.

The other thing you can look at are deductibles. I bumped my homeowners up to $10k and it dropped my premium in half - I'm not filing a claim unless the damage is catastrophic.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Was raining yesterday so I went to Sams up in Dothan to stock up on some things. Haven't been there in quite a while. I was amazed at how large most of the TVs were. When I walked in they had a 100 in Vizio (I think it was Vizio) that was marked down to something like $1,200. The first rows of TVs were all in the 80 in + sizes. The next couple of rows had the "smaller" models....those 75 and under. I was amazed at how small the 75s looked when lined up with the larger screens.

I'm at a limit for TV sizes at this time. My Father-in-Law crafted a custom entertainment center for our family room and we were restricted from going too big based on the side cabinets and central bridge fitting in the width of the room. It turns out to be where a 55" screen with bezels fits but no 65" bezel-less screen can fit. I think there was a brief period where 58" screens where a thing, but no more.

So, no huge screens for the Foxbat's…

I remember MANY years ago I went into Sams Club and saw a thumb drive on sale for $49.88....the storage capacity was a whopping 256mb....yes, MB. I just KNEW that was as cheap as they could ever go and there was simply NO way they could fit any more memory into something that small.

Today is the anniversary of Dan Wheldon's passing at Las Vegas in a dreadful crash that luckily didn't take more drivers' lives. I vaguely remember the crash, but I more strongly remember Paul Tracy trying to keep it together as he left the Medical Center knowing that Dan most likely wasn't going to.

The safety in these vehicles is beyond incomprehensible, especially relative to what it was 60 years ago, when dying wasn't unexpected. But it is still very dangerous. I always scoff at the prayer invocations, but never scoff at the risks these drivers take and the emergency workers out there who might need to pull short of a miracle to save a driver's life.

HBO Max has the live in car streaming without commercials, which provides an interesting take, but you are driving blind, knowing only what the team is telling the driver about what is happening on the track. The stages definitely ruin the NASCAR set up.

NASCAR is an abject mess, but at least it has Kyle Larson. Guy had the lead on the green/white checker, fell back to 12th or the like, kept his cool, and charged back to win with room to spare at the line. And win very cleanly!

NASCAR needs to stop racing at Talladega. Especially if they are going for elderly Sunday drives at the track! Stage racing is real stupid, but NASCAR should consider one half point a second per group gap as a bonus.

I agree to a point. The transfer policy is creating parity, but only for the top 20-25 teams. The other 110+ teams in the FBS are just breeding grounds for the bigger schools which have more money and more recruiting appeal.

If a smaller school recruits, trains, and matures a quality player, they can't keep them past their sophomore year because the bigger schools snatch them up. Example: LSU didn't cultivate Sam Leavitt, they just harvested him from other schools. LSU is a top contender, in large part because of Leavitt. Michigan State and Arizona State.................are not. If either of those schools had been able to retain his services, who knows where they would be now.

I've been having intermittent problems with Amazon Prime video programs loading using the H3 guide listing. I can get to the program I want to watch, but when I try to view it, it starts to load and then stalls. Eventually, a screen pops up saying "something went wrong, try again later". I've tried rebooting the hopper without success. Sometimes switching the HDMI input on my LG TV works, but not always. I don't have this problem on my phone or computer, so it is not a network or router issue.

I did a quick google search and found that this is a common problem associated with overloading or corruption of the data cache in the Amazon app and the solution is to clear the cache. Easy to do on a computer or phone, but I don't know how to do this on the H3. If anyone a solution or suggestion, I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.
