:o Hello,

For a couple of different reasons, I think I (via a pro DIDH installer) will be moving my DISH 1000 from a spot midway up the middle of one of my roofs to a sidemount pole near the peak of the tallest roof.

My primary question is how do installers seal or repair the spot on the roof when a mounting site gets changed? Do they put epoxy down the screw holes to seal out rain, do they put a new shingle on, or what? Since the roof belongs to my homeowners association, I really want to make sure the spot where the satellite mast/post was installed previously is is as totally sealed and restored as possible.

A secondary question involves the new distance from the satellite to the receivers once the dish is moved. At what point is a signal booster, mentioned in other forums and available at Radio Shack, indicated? I'm pretty sure my new distance will be over 100 feet from the dish to the furthest receiver.

Thanks in advance for the help and any good advice!

Hey Bud, I am a Dish Network installer

Roof Seal:

In most cases they will leave the foot plate attached to the roof. They will only remove the pole and current dish and leave plate and screws attached where they are. Once it was intalled that became the perm. Seal, if anyone would remove and/or replace shingles it would be up to the owner of the property. HOA/you/landlord/other. But when first installed the holes should have been sealed off with either Tar/ or lifetime silicone.

And as far as the cable length:

DP or dish pro equipment will have no loss in quality or signal strength as long as it doesnt exceed more then 250 feet, in extreme cases 300' feet would be ok. Anything more and you would have to add an amplifier. Legacy equip would be a diffrent story but with HD you wont have that stuff.

I would look at the foot plate to be sure its actually sealed, Ive run into alot of mounts that sub contractors have not sealed over the years and a few that dish techs failed to seal as well. If your wanting to remove the foot plate then you will need to do it carefully if its sealed and use a large flat screw driver or a box cutter blade to cut the silicone away if silicone or bath tub caulk was used ( seen alot of subs use bath tub caulking ), if tar was used then wait till the roof gets heated up and slowly seperate the foot plate from the shingle. After you have removed the foot plate you can use a tube of roof sealer and fill the holes, I would life up the shingles and smear a silver dollar sized amount around and into the holes and then press the shingle down and put a penny sized amount over that, you can head into the attic in the morning when its cool to inspect the location and add any more sealer as needed.

Legacy or non dishpro / dishpro plus gear will be good up to 500ft, uncomfirmed report of one that was set up down here in the atlanta area in summer 01 that had a 1000ft run.

Hrmmmm.. I work for dish directly and their not always completely honest.. but my paperwork, manual and what I've been told in my training was legacy equipment at the dish.. to the rcvr cannot extend more then 150 feet without an ampl. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

150 feet is a safe number that dish network tells you because if they told you 500... then you went out and did a job at 450 feet and had problems, you would blame them.
150' is a good safe number that they KNOW the system will work at.
As far as 500'... i've never been able to pull it off with rg6... rg11 yes... but rg6... no...
someone somewhere may have been able to do it... but i haven't, and i've tried some pretty darn long runs

Installers who leave the mast base on the roof do not do so to make sure it does not leak, they leave it there so they do not have to be responsible in case it does leak. Plus, they do not want to take the time to remove the base and seal the holes.
The question you should ask is not how do satellite installers seal holes, but how do roofers seal holes and make sure the satellite technician does that.
Most installers do not carry tar or any other form of roof patch.

When I have to remove a mast, I remove all the screws and tab a little tar in the hole. Then I reinstall the lag screws back into the hole, and cover the screw heads with just enough tar to keep the metal from rusting out. You do not need much. Just enough to keep water from getting to the screw head, maybe 1/8" at most. This seals the hole as well as possible, besides replacing shingles.

Most installers use way too much sealant on their holes. Big blobs of tar do not seal any more than just enough to seal the gaps between the screw and roofing material. In real hot climates I would suggest going back the next day and applying another layer of either tar or something that flows better. This will help seal any missed cracks and protect the first layer from drying out to fast.

The best course of action to protect yourself from leak damage is to hire a roofer to check the seal. Then it will be their insurance that protects you, which maybe better than the installers insurance coverage.

Thanks! BTW, how do I find a good installer?

:) Thanks everyone for the good advice! I appreciate it and you have given me some good things to think about.

What may be my biggest barrier is the physical layout of my place and roof. To make a long story shorter, an industrial sized ladder - at least 12 feet long and probably longer - is required to get on my fairly steep pitched roof. I don't have the equipment and I am uncertain about my ability to safely do what should be done.

1) So, how do I find a good installer in the NW Twin Cities MN area capable of and willing to do the right thing in the right way?

2) A few years back I had the DISH equipment service warranty to cover a lengthy service call. After several months of no further problems, I dropped the extra charge when my wife was temporarily laid off. Since this is sounding like an expensive bit of work, does anyone know if one can still buy into that service coverage? It was about $5.00 a month a few years ago. If I can't get this coverage, is the work that will be required approaching the prohibitively expensive range? (I.e. more than $100 to $200 plus the new mounting post.)

Thanks again! Best wishes for good reception to all.

Another reason I'm glad we are swapping or Rokus out for Apple TVs. I was already planning on ditching the Rokus earlier this year and had been waiting on Apple to announce the new one last month. Our Rokus have had issues the last year or so with freezing video and reboots, and one with an HDCP issue randomly.

Until I can get a mortgage on an ATV, I doubt that's going to happen for me.

As much as the price has gone up, the complaints on the forums about this, that, and the other nits surrounding various limitations and Apple business decisions seem to be keeping pace.

I have the Roku's, 2 or 3, I just rarely use them ... I prefer the Google/Android Sony set up.

People tell me that the Apps on the TV will end thier usefulness as they age ... They are doing ok for me so far ... I also have the TV take the App Updates whenever possible ... then again, I don't know how often App updates come to it.

So, so far, I'm doing ok, but if they start to get sluggish, I'll eventually change to a Roku ... I don't want to, but eventually ... (Or buy another new TV :eeek:shh:clapping:biggrin

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

They recently split the news channels off of MySports, so CNBC, CNN, FBN, FNC and MSNOW are no longer part of it.

MySports was decreased to $64.99, and a new "MySports+MyNews Duo" pack is $79.99, which will also give you Bloomberg, CNBC World, CNNI, the C-SPANs, i24 and Newsmax.

Tennis Channel also joined MySports at some point over the past year.

Here's the Insider article. Shudder is now part of MyCinema and Fanatiz1 was added to the Spanish packages last Friday. PX Sports was also added a few weeks ago.

It's not just AMC+ driving the price increases on the genre packs, the rest of the AMC Networks (AMC, WE, IFC, Sundance, BBC America), along with Paramount/CBS, Hallmark, Weigel and others joined since they debuted last year.
K
MySports now has some CW affiliates, and MyNews now has some CW affiliates and the MyNetworkTV O&Os.

At quick check, it looks like the CBS and Sinclair owned CW affiliates are missing.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

It's now live on channel 654 as HEAT on sat and stream for the Fort Myers DMA, and it looks like it's only going to only be active for the Heat games and redirect to the No Broadcast slide when it's showing the WINK radar loop.

If they are also using this feed for Heat games on satellite's League Pass, you'll probably be seeing Fort Myers ads and a WINK top of the hour ID instead of Miami ads.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I have tried the pill form and this liquid form and found the liquid to be far superior. It wasn't immediate, my joints slowly improved over time.

Another supplement I wanted to mention was Luteolin. This has two major benefits
1) it helps improve your memory
2) it has a unique anti-greying affect. Saw a Daily Mail news story about a year ago I guess and they were testing different antioxidants on black mice and found that the ones they gave luteolin to barely greyed at all where the control group greyed normally. Has something to do with this stuff preventing the hair roots from becoming damaged which is one of the causes of going grey.

Now I've been taking this supplement for a long time and at 62 I barely have any grey hairs at all.
If it would only help improve my ability to remember NAMES!!
