Thanks for the article. It summarizes one point I have made on several related threads on several sites. That point is, no matter how one chooses to count the total number of HD channels by determining what to include (RSNs, PPV, Premiums, ex), if both companies use the same exact counting standard, Direct will still be in the lead even after Dish adds these 17 new HD channels.

"article" said:
According to my count Dish Network currently has 41 and DirecTV has 45. These are channels which anyone can pick up anywhere in the USA.

If we add in premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz then the numbers look like this. DirecTV 60 and Dish Network 47. (This is not including the 13 premium services Dish will be adding on August 1st bringing them to tie DirecTV at 60)

In the PPV field Dish Network has 5 HD PPV channels (7 if you have a Dish which is aimed at the 129 orbital location), while DirecTV dominates the field with 13 HD PPV channels.

In the regional sports network department DirecTV again dominates the field with 11 24/7 HD RSN channels, while Dish Network currently has zero. In the game time only HD RSN count DirecTV has 28 and Dish Network has 33.

So where do they count 100 HD channels? And if they are advertising 100 national HD channels why can’t anyone subscribe to all 100 HD channels?

You are off on one point though. Direct does not count their game only RSNs while Dish does (you were not wrong here). Your argument about not getting all 100 channels by Dish is correct, but one can get all 95 by Direct anywhere in the USA 24/7 (this is where you were wrong). Of course one would have to pay a lot of money to get the out of market RSNs for full time, but it is still possible.

I think the real point is that count doesn't mean much if they don't offer the channels or packaging that fits your needs best.

I agree. The only count that matters to each individual is the count within their particular package. It is this package by package comparison that should be the main focus.

Look at my sig...

Hey Harsh!
Here is something we can agree on! (Has Hell frozen over?) I could be a Dish customer, but they don't have YES, much less in hd. That's a deal breaker for me. For others, it might not make any difference at all.

New 5 LNB Slimline Dish from DIRECTV

Hello All,

Good Evening..! How are you all doing..! I am new at your forum, thank you for been out there..! Helping us with all this questions.

I leave in San Diego, I have Direct TV, I have the 3 LNB satellite 101°, 110°, 119° with a H21 HD Receiver and I only get between 8 HD HBOH, SHOWH, ESPH, ESPN2H,TNTH,UHD,HDTH, and HDN channels, but no HD Local Channels, or other HD channels that suppost to come with the HD package.

To make long story short, I am about to purchase the New 5 LNB Slimline Dish for the adittional satellites (99°, 103°), my questions is, what differents will it make, what HD channels more should I be getting, is it over 100, will this two satellites make a big differents.

Maybe I am doing something wrong I have a 96 signal meter with the 3 LNB.

Please Advise.

Thanks

Best Regards

There are going to be four satellites in those two slots that you're currently missing. Depending on how far into Mexico you live, you may not be able to get HD locals.

Depending on what you subscribe to, you may get anywhere from 5 to 86 new HD channels.

Seems to me that E* is including any channel that at any time may have HD on it, even for a select few or in a particular location. By that method, god only knows how many D* would have. Consider if D* counted every channel that gets the MLB EI games many of which have both the home and away feed. Add to that the what is it, 10 games or so that will show up every Sunday in the fall with the NFL ST. Lets face it, compared to a short time ago both sat companies have upped the ante. In my bood the edge goes to D*. In reality, if you are into the sports end of things than it is domination. Even as or more imprtant is the quality. Hey, they both can throw out advertisments all they want. Check out what you want and what you can get, consider the price to be paid and the quality of the picture, equipment and support. The war rages on.
