I am about to order direct tv for my house, one main box DVR and two mini boxes for bedrooms.

I also have weekend get away property at the lake about an hour away, how could I use my direct tv service there with minimal equipment moving, but not having to pay for a second account

What mdram said .... Except you'll want to get a Non Genie recvr in the home system somewhere... and take That recvr with you.
Such as a Hr24 ... that recvr will work on both Swm and Non Swm ...
Not sure if D* would have them as part of an install anymore with them pushing the New stuff.
You can proba my get on from like Solid Signal or eBay . .. if eBay make sure it's not a lease. If you get one from SS it WILL still be a lease, but that's ok.
Get your service at home turned on, then add the Hr24, activate it at home ...
Set up your dish at New place, if both dishes are Swm , your better off.

Ok, so I could buy a hr24 from ss as well as a swm dish, install the dish at my lake house myself.

Then have direct come and install my genie and mini genie receivers at home, and just have them set up the hr24 in a spare room, then I could just move the hr24 to the lake house and leave it there.

As long as I'm not using both at same time there is no problem right.

shouldnt be
make sure both dishs and lnbs are the same, will save time when oving units

If I plan on just leaving the hr24 at the lake house and not moving it back and forth would that be a problem?

Also, any help on how to install the dish myself at the lake, can I do it myself without any special meters or tools?

:welcome to Satelliteguys dethnode!

If you get a Genie make sure it's not an HS17 since you can use only clients with it, no receivers or dvrs. What's the zip codes of your house and the lake house? If they are far enough apart, you may not get local channels there.

Good call Chip ... on the No HS17.

He mentioned earlier that he was only about an hour away, he should be ok.

We have dtv 2 locations on one account dvr at home and a standard receiver in a rv and if im not mistaken you can be with in 150 miles from home you can get your home account locals.

The distance varies based on the spot beam that carries the locals and where your home base is located within that spot beam. If you are already toward the edge and go away from it, you can lose them quickly, but if you go nearer to the center, then they will work much farther away.

We also have one account and two locations. We have 3 receivers at our Canadian home and locals come in fine @75% signal strength.

Is that a rule? No other type receivers?
It sounds like it, but I haven't found anything yet, haven't really looked ... thats what they are being told though, nothing other than clients for HS17.

They would be smart to amend this if at all possible ... many more people would probably be in favor of the HS17 if they did.

Clients only with the HS17. If you get an HS17 they will remove all non-clients from the account.

That really suxs, ya know, some of these recvrs are owned, now they are doorstops ?
Thats not right.

I just hope anyone out there that gets upgraded are told about this ahead of time and have it explained to them so they actually understand whats happening.

To prove how close it can be - I am about 225 miles from the city I am "moved" to, Boston. I get 77% on the HD locals from Boston, 73% on a few channels on a different transponder. I found a county to "move" to that also gets my home locals as SV (in HD since it's an HD-only market) and they are 99%. My friend lives 20 miles north of me in real life and couldn't "move" to anywhere with Boston locals because they have less than 60% for the transponders with HD Boston locals.

The HS17 sounds like a living nightmare. A unit that doesn't connect to your TV and relies on clients? NO WAY!

A "headless" server and clients is almost certainly ATTs product direction for new developoment.

unless they really bump up the tuners/timers its pretty much worthless for anyone with a genie and a dvr
which could be quite a few users
