Thursday, April 9th kicks off the first PGA Major of the season; The Masters at ever beautiful Augusta National.

The two major story lines will most definitely involve Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington.

Tiger is fresh off a dramatic comeback victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. This was Tiger's 3rd event since an 8 month layoff following knee surgery. With that win, Tiger has announced to the world that he's back and ready to compete at a high level again. Tiger has 14 Major wins and is seeking to further close the gap on Jack Nicklaus' 18.

Padraig Harrington has won the last two Major's (British Open and PGA Championship). A win at The Masters would keep the "Paddy Slam" alive. Only Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods have won all 4 Majors consecutively.

With that said...... Let Golf's Major season begin!

This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year. TPC at Sawgrass too.

The Par 3 Contest is today. Word of advice to the participants, don't win today! In Masters history, the player to win the Par 3 contest has NEVER went on to also with the Masters Tournament held (Thursday thru Sunday).

I am recording it, it is on ESPN today @ 3pm est.

And the winner will NOT be.....

Tim Clark has either had the unfortunate accomplishment of winning the Par 3 Contest ... or he's about to break a 50-year curse.

Clark wins the day-before tourney for the first time, thanks to a hole-in-one on the final hole.

I watched on delay :D and it was nice to see Jack, Arnie, and Gary playing again. I can't believe Gary Player is playing in his 52 Masters.

Yeah, and this will be his last Masters if I remember correctly. Great career indeed. Mr. Player, you will be missed!

Yes it is his last and he holds the record for the most. Arnie is second with 50.

The Masters, Round 1 Recap:

Thursday turned out to be a glorious day for Golf. The greens were nice and soft, the weather unimposing and there were shots to be made. Players took advantage. As one announcer said, "if you look at the first-round leaderboard, you'd see more red red on it than at a Nebraska football game".

Don't expect this type of scoring the next 3 days. The Masters committee will most certainly make sure the conditions are tougher in the upcoming days.

After Day 1, Chad Campbell came very close to tying/breaking the course round record of 63. He ended up shooting a 7-under-par 65, including a Masters-record birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie start.

Other notable scores included: Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan shooting 66s. Augusta native, 50-year-old Larry Mize shot a 67. Greg Norman, at 54, recorded a very respectable 70. Tim Clark who won the par-3 contest is in the clubhouse with a 68. Padraig Harrington, who has won three of the past six major championships is also in the hunt. Paddy finished with a 69, which puts him 4 strokes behind the leader.

Tiger Woods shot a 70, which puts him tied for 19th place and 5 shots behind Campbell. He missed makeable birdie putts on 16 and 17 and made a mess of 18 with a bogey. Historically, Woods never does well in the first round of The Masters. As a matter of fact, for an opening round score, 70 is an all-time best for him. Tiger typically does better as the weekend progresses.

All of this of course is setting up for a masterful (no pun intended) weekend of golf. I for one can't wait!

I love the pictures. They seem to get closer and more personal with their cinematography. My favorite tournament of the year, and highly recommended even if you don't like to watch golf.

It's times like this when I wish I had accepted that golf scholarship instead of joining the service. With the exception of my poor swing, bad attitude, tendancy to curse frequently, and my violent outbursts of throwing clubs and the occasional entire set into a nearby pond...I coulda had me one of them Green Jackets.:D

Seriously, I wish I take a week off and travel to Augusta National each year.

Tiger and Phil put on a show today. It was fun while it lasted. I guess Old Man River will win instead. :( Oh well. Good to have Tiger back.
