Blu-ray continues to outpace HD DVD - Technology Live - USATODAY.com

The stylistic Spartan battle film 300 has charged to the fastest sales start of any high-def video disc release yet, according to Warner Home Video. Consumers have purchased more than 250,000 copies of the film in the competing Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats since its release July 31. That far surpasses the previous hot seller, also from Warner, The Departed, which took three months to sell 100,000 copies.
So far, the Blu-ray Disc version of 300 is outselling the HD DVD version, 65% to 35%. According to Home Media Research, that mirrors the overall sales pattern this year (Jan-June), with Blu-ray accounting for 67% and 33% for HD DVD,.
Warner releases movies on both of the competing formats. Sony, Disney and Fox only support Blu-ray, while Universal exclusively supports HD DVD.

I can go either format and usually try to get a title on HD-DVD. I feel the picture is better and I like the interactive features along with lossless audio on more titles. For what we are being charged all titles from both sides should be well equiped.

While 50% of BD titles have lossless audio, only about 15% of HD-DVD titles have lossless audio. That is what I read. I care more about lossless audio, than fancy extras and IME etc. I never watch those anyway.

But will you take advantage of BD-Java when it comes available this October if your player can play it? I too just like to watch the movie, but sometimes there are some very interesting fluff. I especially like bloopers and historical referances.

Yeah some bloopers are ok

I'm format neutral and picked up 300 on BD mainly because it was $5 cheaper and I loathe combos.

That said, I think 2:1 sales numbers of this film are a bit of a disappointment for BD given what was going on heading in. BD sales in general were better than 2:1 heading into the July 31st week and 300 was hitting the EXACT demographic of its biggest user-base - PS3 owners. I expected that even casual movie fans that had a PS3 would pick this one up on BD, and given that, the BD sales advantage, and the fact that the HD-DVD was $5 more I was expecting it to sell a heckuva lot better than 2:1 over HD.

With the upcoming fall releases from Disney and Fox, especially, and the new BD players arriving, the gap will widen.

If not, we'll all have good explanations as to why not!;)

Hey navy, dunno if you saw but Ratatouille is coming out in November. I know you've been picking up cartoon titles.

I agree in a way. I still think BD will win, but I honestly am not a BD fanboy, I just really like messing with the HDDVD guys sometimes. Ill be getting many Amazon gift certificates for Christmas as usual, I might use these on a A2 since they will be cheap.

At the end of the day, I want to see ALL my movies in HD, so if it takes two players I will. I just hate to buy something that might not last. Right now 8 out of 10 netflix rentals are BD, but its worth it to me to spend $200 to get 10 out of 10.

Oh, yes, I know. Wife Placation Title. Oh, all right- if you're gonna twist my arm, I want it too!

So far, with no BD player on hand, mind you, I have:
Casino Royale
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Ice Age Meltdown
Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy
Chicken Little

And I will soon order 300. And later, the Rat. I'd preorder it now if Amazon would let me.

I guess my desire to see the war end, and the higher capacity format win (I need computer backup at work bad, better than the tape we have), has overcome my distaste for Sony.

Thats my reason for the support, forget movies, I want to end with the higher storage format.

Anyways, Ive heard Cars looks great so Im going to buy it and Sky Captain is also supposed to look awesome. I buy one per week right now and am booked until late Oct, so ill prob add it.

Spidey 1 and 2 coming to BR, but only with 3.

Hot Fuzz HD-DVD gets 5/5 from HighDefDigest
