The 811 did not support MPEG-4, which is what is used for HD today.

Yes they will activate it on a western arc setup, but it's a MPEG2 standard definition receiver. It also doesn't have a channel 3 output like the 311. It has to be hooked to a TV with RCA cables(yellow, red, white). If your TV is an older one with only a coax connector, you'll need to have an RF modulator, or hook it up through a VCR that has an RCA input.

the 381 (811) has a OTA tuner so you can get your locals in HD with an antenna. Also it shows guide info if you have locals through dish or not

381(811) does have OTA that the 311 dosen't, BUT it is slower than molasses in the middle of winter. I have 2 811 and like them but unless you are looking for OTA broadcasts the 311 is a much smarter buy.

Not kidding at all here. The 381 is a boat anchor. The 311 is a reliable piece of equipment.
The 381 is a former 811 with the HD capability disabled.
It's a POS..If you have one, I would be surprised it is working. If you don't and someone offers to sell or give you one, say "no thanks".
