I was able to watch 4K college football just fine... But now when I switch to watch Olympics, I see them in 4K for a few seconds, my TV recognizes 4K format, and then a big Dish banner pops up saying my TV doesn’t support this format. All while I see the action just fine behind it.

Any insight on what technical reason exists that I can’t watch it in 4K without the HDR “features”? Is it just Dish being weird or is it going to really break my TV?

Try this: With the "isn't compatible" pop-up message on screen, press "Menu" and see if the program is now in the PiP box. Press "Cancel" and see if you now have the program without the pop-up. The picture is washed-out on a non-HDR set, but it's watchable.

wow, have a 4k tv & 4k dvr & still can't watch the Olympics
I did not know that a non hdr tv would keep you from watching

How is Direct broadcasting the Olympics?
