TRANSPONDER CHANGES

CHANGE TID 4009 Tp 9 SPOT 1 Ciel 2 129w ,8PSK SR 21500 FEC 2/3
TO TID 4009 Tp 9 SPOT 1 Ciel 2 129w ,QPSK SR 26000 FEC 2/3

CHANGE TID 4012 Tp 12 SPOT 1 Ciel 2 129w ,QPSK SR 20000 FEC 5/6
TO TID 4012 Tp 12 SPOT 1 Ciel 2 129w ,8PSK SR 21500 FEC 2/3

Symbol Rate, a term which defines the data rate to some extent. Normal Symbol Rate on DBS transponders(24 mhz) operating with QPSK Modulation is 20000. The Symbol Rate used on AMC 15 transponders(36 mhz) was 26000.

I dont have my old trusty chart anymore that showed how much bandwidth that produced (QPSK, 26000 SR, 2/3 FEC). How much is gained (if any) by switching to this from 8PSK, 21500 SR, 2/3 FEC? Is that what they are doing, looking for more bandwidth?

Probably more reliable reception. QPSK seems to do better than 8PSK. Probably close to the same data rate is yielded. Not so sure that they are not over modulating the transponder, though.

8PSK 21500 2/3 = around 40 megabit
QPSK 26000 2/3 = around 32 megabit

Am I reading this one right and ANchorage is/will be getting their PBS in HD???? Any chance of the us in the lower 48 states to start getting it, too???

Dish Network and DirecTV are required to provide all digital channels in any market in which they carry any local channels. That requirement is phased in gradually over the next 4 years.

So, you will see your PBS in HD some time between now and 4 years from now.
