I have an old 510 DVR that has been sitting in a closet for years, I am going to pull the 120gig HD from it and use it in one of my comps. What OS is it formatted with? I assume it is Linux, I should be able to format it and use it. Anyone else ever try this?

Thanks,
Brad

You can get more for your 510 on ebay than a 120GB disk costs brand new. So why not sell it?

Yes, it's some variation of Linux. But, if you're gonna format the hard drive it doesn't really matter what OS. Format away!
Nay, not Linux, not its flavor, just pure Dish SW and EFS ( EchostarFileSystem) on the disk.

I was prepared for Linux or Windows, I have a Linux Computer (you can't format a Linux partitioned HD with Windows) Will I be able to format it with either?

Thanks again,
Brad

You can use FDISK to delete the partition and then create a new one and format it, can you not? Or use the hard drive's vendor utility and low level format the drive.

Thanks Mr. Smith for clarifying that is not Linux.
