720p or 1080i on 622

622 question: I know this question is totally subjective, but which setting should give the best picture 720p or 1080i? I have tried both and really can't tell the difference.

Set it to what ever your tv output should be . IF you have a tv that does 1080i then that is what you should set your 622 to.

1080i has looked the best on all the Dish HD recievers I've had. (my Samsung OTA STB too.)

I previously had 811's, and currently have a 942 and a 622. 1080i looks much better on all three of my HD TV's regardless of the connection (HDMI, DVI or component).

One is a 51" 1080i rear projection CRT, one is a 50" 720p DLP and one a 720p LCD Front projector.

720p looks like crap in comparison. My TV's are three different technologies and three different manufacturers so I would assume the Dish boxes(Like many Boxes) don't do a very good job of 720p conversion.

THe 720p output from my HTPC looks fantastic on both my 720p displays.

I also Had Charter Cable for two weeks and the 1080i output on their MOXI HD DVR looked much better than 720p as well.

720p should be used with only the native 720p stations (ESPN ESPN2 ABC FOX maybe NGHD). If you have a 720p television I would assume that it will do a better job deinterlacing 1080i than the dish box.

I have a 1080i display and notice a difference on espn between 720p and 1080i output modes of the box. 720p looks better. 1080i looks better on the other "HD" channels.

For whatever reason in my case 720p Panasonic 500 projector works much better with 1080i output then with 720p output from 622.

The Answer to the question depends your HDTV, does it accept Either, or both formats (1080i, 720p).

The next consideration depends on your TV's actual resolution. If you have a Plasma or other Display that doesn't have enough pixel depth for 1080i then you might be better using the format (720p) that more closely matches your TV's actual resolution.

The reason being your TV has to scale the incoming signal to the actual pixel depth of your display. Less scaling usually equals better picture and fewer artifacts.

On my Syntax 42" LCD, 720p looked the best when I used the SA8300HD from Cox. 1080i looked blurry.

With the Vip622, I find the 1080p setting way clearer and sharper.
